I don't think Ari particularly cares if her last name gets passed on. There are only about 400 surnames in China (a country of over 1 billion), and only about 100 "common" surnames. Ari's surname is one of these.
Ah, yes. Asians are pathetically anal about their last names being passed on. My grandmother (who is, by the way, FEMALE!!!! and therefore NOT a Duan) constantly irked my parents and uncles about having more kids at the risk of losing their homes and jobs and savings because none of them had sons to preserve the Duan family roots. She finally got her one grandson, and has since ignored us girls. Never mind that neighbors, nannies, and beggars randomly picked off the street also share our precious family name. This is the mentality that murders infant girls, causing their would-be soulmates to turn gay.
By that I mean, you can have my last name for all I care.
...And by
that I mean, you can
delete my last name and insert your own. And I'll be the first non-ancient woman in my family to change her last name.
