Writetly, the Free Web Word Processor
« on: March 16, 2006, 01:39:15 PM »
I've been using this for a while, and I really like it, especially since it has settings that allow folks to collaborate and edit docs via the web.

http://www2.writely.com/info/WritelyOverflowWelcome.htm

I've written several reviews with it as well as other projects and Im pretty satisfied with it. The nice part is that my documents exist on the web, which means that I dont have to fumble with disks, or burning to cd. It does HTML and tags, and you can publish right from wrightly to blogger and livejournal.

Evidently Im not the only person who liked it though, because Google just bought it. So look for google writely soon.

Old users of Writely are just gonna get their stuff transferred over, which is cool and they are holding off new registration untill after the switch.

When it becomes availible I think all of us writing types should evaluate it strenuously. It sounds like a great review opportunity I think.

Another such web tool is writeboard, put out by 37 signals.

http://www.writeboard.com/

It's a simplified version or writley.  I prefer writley, but I think writeboard is also a nice tool, and could be better depending on your purposes.

As a side note, I also like 37signals tada list.  It's a minimalistic program, but I find it very useful.

or... you could just use a wiki. :D

No, seriously. That's nice and all, but I hardly need word processing or web tools. What I need is a decent calendar that let's me format anything anyway I want and doesn't swallow the equivelant of seven herds of cattle for resources.

Hi, can anybody send me invitation to Writley? Existing users have 50 invitations to give. I would like to see if I can save on Microsoft Office

I can, id like to know a little about you before I do. Its nothing personal and all, but Im reserving most of my invites for friends at the moment. Perhaps you could post a short bio on the Introduce Yourself thread.

Part of the reason im reluctant is that memberships can be transferred by sharing documents, (which sends out the invite) I might just make a doc for that purpose eventually, but right now I just have stuff Im working on.

but if you can impress me,... I'll give you a golden ticket.

also Writely is a different alternative to office, its does act as a word processor, but it isnt a suite of programs designed to do reports, spreadsheets and other things. Thats great if you just want to write and do projects, but not so good for work. Its also not great if you have spotty internet connections and availibility. Where writely shines is in its collaborative input, its flexebility (you can use it anywhere with a good net connection and its storage space. Remember though its now owned by google and while google has pledged not to steal users writing, they do have a lot of data to use against you. I love writely but readily acknowlege it isnt perfect (it is a beta)... have you considered open office? Its a free open source office project compatible with all major office suites.

Personally I think it's kind of Lame you have to "invite" people to use the software.  If you're going to make something free make it free, don't create a false "demand" for it just becasue you're limiting the actuall use of it yourself.

ya, I'm sure it is.  ::)

No offence but Gmail has been around for almost 2 years with no sign of the Beta ending, I think it's just an excuse to try and make some false demand for the service.

Google news has been around for nearly 4 years, and it's still in beta.

Yeah, I like media wiki better...  But this is a nice tool.
