Rooibos Tea
« on: February 28, 2005, 11:14:15 PM »
Rooibos (roy-boss) tea is not in the strictest sense a tea. The name tea technically only applies to the fermented leaves of the Camilla sinesis tree(which Rooibos isnt from), while the term Tisane applies to all other brewed herbal beveridges.
I just started to buy Rooibos tea, because it has no caffine, no tannins (which in the strictest sense arent really tannins but thats a discussion for later) it helps with my hay fever and has plenty of iron, potassium, zinc and calcium. It also tastes good, mildly sweet and doesnt get bitter like a lot of other teas.

Just putting it in the rant section to well rant... in a good way... try it with vanilla... its tasty.

Speaking of teas.  There's a very good "tea" made from flowers mostly in Egypt called Karkoday.  At least, that's what it's called in the Middle East.

Any of you ever heard of it?  Any of you know where I could get some more?

There probably aren't that many middle eastern shops out there in Utah, are there? Tons latino groceries. Not much in the way of middle-eastern.
THere are tons of ethnic restaurants and groceries all over the place around here. I'll try to stop in some and see if I can find any for you. If so, I can probably find how to order it directly.

That would be very cool!  Thanks.;D

If you decide to try some, I caution you.  You must add sugar.  For some reason sugarless Karkoday is wildly bitter and most unpleasant but even a dash/pinch/shake/dab of sugar turns it lovely.

Thanks for the tip, Jeffe. We use tea around my house mostly as a remedy for sore throats, but my husband always complains about the bitterness. What kind of vanillao you put in your tea?

I either use the syrup that people use for espresso or...the celestial seasonings Rooibos that has vanilla. Yay! Oh its aparently good for hay fever,... which is something I can test out personally in about a month...

If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)
