Actually, one of the reasons i like star trek Deep Space 9 is that it is internally funny. You laugh at the jokes the characters make, not because the characters themselves are the jokes. This means it can maintain the gravity a lot of the episodes demand without making the entire series dry.
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

Very well put, Entropy. the later seasons of DS9 had some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen on TV, and it was all because of the well-developed characters and their relationships with each other.

Now I agree, but that's interesting because I hear a lot of people complain that those relationships got way too soap opera-esque.

But hey, I was a big fan of the Odo/Kira plot, myself and "His Way" is one of my favorite eps. (that's the one where Vic the hologram finally gets them together).

I loved everything about DS9 except their obsession with the bajoran religion.  I usually didn't sit through all of those episodes (and it kind of made me dislike the final episode).

Mustard never got past the first season, which was exceptionally religion-heavy, and then trots out that same obsolete argument every time anyone mentions the series. Pshaw, I say, pshaw.

Since I actually didn't start watching regularly until 2nd season, I missed most of that.

Oh, also with DS9 - I know it's normal, take a previous "villian" race and develop them further.  But I did like what they did with Quark, Rom, Nog, and the whole Ferengi race.

It also lead to my brilliant theory that the reason all the Ferengi in TNG were so *stupid* is that in a society where money and business is top dog, only the stupid sons get sent into the military.

What a punk.  I watched DS9 all the time.  Not religiously (har har har), but pretty dang often.  It was only the last season or two that I ignored.

I've only seen seasons 1 - 5. I own 4 and 5 in the boxed DVD sets, and plan to buy the rest soon. The big battle at the end of season 5 was kinda disappointing, since it looked just like the battle at the start of season 3, only with cardassian and dominion ships, not klingon ones.

One funny thing is the free program you get, which is a big database full of episode listings, race lists, character lists etc, all with episode cross - references. It's kinda juicy.

One of my favourite parts of the entire show is the relationships that Bashir has with O'Brien and Garrack. The lunch talks of Garrack and Bashir are just brilliant, and the way the friendship of O'Brien and Bashir developed was so well done. Garrack in particular is a juicy prospect, since he seems to be turning somewhat... good. Shocking, i know. Please, don't ruin anything for me here. I'm desperate to see how he develops further.

Plus, Garrack speaks almost like a Brit, i think.

fuzzy, I watched the special features from the last disk in season six, and they do a little special about Ferengi.  The guy who plays Quark actually played one of the Ferengi when they were first introduced in TNG (I think) and said that he's been trying to "fix" that mistake and always wanted to develop the Ferengi race into something more.

But my logic makes sense, doesn't it?  You're too stupid for business, you go into the military.

I'm having a hard time picturing Rom (who, by their standards was considered stupid) in the Ferengi military.  But yes, your logic makes sense for all the other Ferengi.

a Trek w/ non-starfleet characters? That would be interesting. I would go back to look at it. Note: that I am not a Trekker or Trekkie. I've watches some Trak, thought it passable, and largely ignore most of it.

Entropy, Garak is once of the best characters in the series, and is given ample screen time and several cool plot points as the story goes on. You'll love it.
