National Do-Not-Spam List
« on: October 23, 2003, 11:43:35 AM »
Coming on the heels of the Do Not Call, the senate voted yesterday 97-0 to outlaw a good portion of spam emails.

According to CNN.com:
Quote
Marketers who falsify return addresses or routing information, hide their pitches behind misleading subject lines such as "Re: your request" or promote body-enhancement pills or other fraudulent products would face jail sentences of up to a year and fines of up to $1 million; repeat offenders could face jail terms of up to five years.

I read that in the paper this morning (you know, paper? The thin stuff that folds and clicking on it doesn't do anything?). It sounds neat, but if we see a significant decrease in spam I'll be amazed.

seeing as it's easy and cheap to spam from a location outside the US, over which US justice has *NO* jurisdiction (unless Bush decides to attack a soveregin nation over this too), Spam will probably not be hurt hard. In fact, if your email shows up on a "do not spam" list, dollars to donuts someone finds a way to get the list itself and spams it.
