I Summon Tech Support!
« on: March 16, 2005, 09:33:02 PM »
Okay, so I've been trying to upgrade my comp to get it a bit beefier. I decide to replace my CD ROM with a DVD ROM.

Sounds easy, right?

So I take out the CD ROM, reconnect the cables to the DVD ROM (which came with few instructions) and...nothing happens.  The computer fails to recognize both that and my burner that was slaved to my CD ROM.  I can't make Windows detect it.

So I put my CD ROM back in, frustrated.  Any help?

I wasn't sure if that would work...installing the drivers before the device.  Worth a shot, though..

did you check the jumpers on the back? I'd put them in teh "Cable select" position. make sure thats how the jumper on the back of the burner is too.

ALso, verify that the red edge of your IDE ribbon and the red wire on the power plug are facing each other. Most new devices are manufactured in a way that there's no other way to plug them in, but check anyway.

if nothing else, remove the cables and plug them back in to make sure they're seated correctly.

also, you may have blown out something. I've never actually done it despite working in some dodgy setups, but it's possible. Want a geeky fact? most computer components are designed to tak up to ~5V of current. 30V will burn them out. You don't FEEL a static shock unless it has at least 2500V. If you can SEe the static shock (as a spark) it's going to be around 20000V (that's twenty thousand). So you can totally blow up a computer componet and not even feel it. proper grounding can actually be important.

optical drives don't typically use drivers. The only drivers would be the IDE controller drivers, and those are working if the any device on a cable to it are working.

edit:
note: windows will give you driver information, but installing a new drive does not require a new driver, even if that drive is different from the one that was there before.

Thanks, guys!

I was reading something online and it said to do just what you did, Saint.  Sure enough, it was set to slave.  It seems to work now, though I did get a blue screen of death earlier while I was out of the room.  But, it's functioning.

The only problem is that the drivers are trying to install through DOS and can't find a file.  Granted, it's working fine without them, but I would like to add them at some point.

another thing you'll want to check is your power supply. Make sure you're not overloading that. As I was (and still am) overloading it with too many devices. So hurrah for power.

You might try looking on the manufacter's website and see if you can find new drivers.

sounds like thats a firmware update utility, not a driver.
If the drive works fine, dont fix it.
