So I'm curious--are you part of the Irish language revival generation? Or has your family retained the language for generations past? I've read a little about it, and Ireland seems to be ahead of Scotland in this. When I was in Scotland a year or so ago, the street signs were often in both languages, especially in the Highlands, but it didn't seem to be a widespread spoken language. I've heard that the further north you go (Skye, Hebrides), that's when it becomes an everyday spoken language.

you are correct it is eveyday language in skye, and in ireland in a few places in the north like in karegaine where i live and was born, but my mothers side of the family has always spoken it and as for my da, well he's jewish... but karegaine never was a place where english was spoken, you should see the crazy keyboards, it's hard to get one with the american alphabet...but back on topic, everything here is written in caledonian, it has 34 characters and c is not one of them, which is why i always forget it.

I've yet to see a road sign in dual languages outside wales. But then, i've never been to the highlands. Never been north of Aberdeen. Past that people start forgetting about things like 'electricity' :P

I'm Scottish. As my post in the introduction thread states.

My mom's side of the family is scottish and my da's is irish. I do have the last name Sweney, which I think is Irish...I think. I'm very interested in the culture, yet I have no way of finding out interesting stuff, unless I went to Ireland or something. How did this topic turn into one about Irish/Scottish/Gaelic/etc.?
