Useless facts thread.
« on: September 18, 2003, 06:53:25 AM »
This thread is where you should post all your useless little pieces of trivia.

1) The British fondness for Tea came about because it was cheaper, due to tax considerations, than coffee, and it was not a depressant like Cigarettes or Alchol, the only other stimulants available at that time.

2) Alexander the great was told by the priests of Zeus (or the egyptian incarnation) that he was the 'Son of God'.

3) A quarter of all emigrants from Britain to colonies in the empire were Scottish. Another quarter were Irish. This means that today there are (probably considerably) more Scottish and Irish living outside the British Isles and Eire than within.

If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

About the Scottish useless fact: in my family history research, I've come across quite a few stats about that. I think the United States alone, they said, has something like 100 million people of Scottish descent. Maybe I'm making that number up. Whatever it was, it was large, like 1/2 of the population of the U.S. Of course, many of them are probably like me, not just Scottish. I'm Swedish, Irish, Scottish, English, German, and Prussian.

Whereas The British and Dutch fondness for coffee comes from the fact that they were protestant, while Catholic nations hold (or at least held) Chocolate as their favorite hot beverge...

I had a friend who kept claiming that he was descended from scottish kings... So I put him in his place.

A lot of my family descends from the Island of Mann, which supposedly makes me part Manx. Why do or did they call people from the Island of Mann "manx?" Or is it just a useless fact.
