Gameboard top 50
« on: January 19, 2005, 09:53:07 AM »
This kinda covers the whole game industry so it dosen't belong in RPG/table/CCG boards despite being about them.

Gameboard, an on-line retailer, listed their top-50 selling games of 2004.

http://www.gameboard.com/top502004.cfm

I find it intresting that not a single wizard CCG is on the list.

Here's their 2003 top 50 for sake of compaireson.

I'm a little surprised to see Mage Knight did so well.  I thought Mechwarrior was a bigger cash cow for Wizkids.

Interesting.

I think it's interesting how much the positioning of games changed on the list from one year to the next. It seems like the more recent games were higher on the list. So basicly, gaming companies need to keep providing new, quality stuff if they want to make a profit.

YOU HEAR THAT ALL YOU GAMING COMPANIES. No resting on your laurels. Now Gimme.

Mechwarrior sells big, but to a smaller audience. Also, I'm sure the 2.0 relaunch had a lot to do with MK's success. The Mechwarrior relaunch (hitting stores today, in fact) might push Mechwarrior back up.

Actualy MK Socerery (the newist expansion) is realy well done.  I've only bought one booster but I was impressed with what I saw.  Socerery is a huge improvement over the previous MK sets in tearms of design, both design and models.  The painting and sculpting is a lot better then many previous MK and WK stuff.

According to the basic laws of economics, that is still a failure. Unless that small audience is really wealthy and willing to pay exhorbant amounts of cash.

Now remember this is just one retailor's top 50, while it gives us an idea of what the actual market is like it dosen't 100% reflect how things actualy sell.

If something sells big to a small audience, it can still be profitable.

It all depends on the production costs.

But it is not as robust, Ookla. The more customers, the more you can afford to lose. Less means they have to keep a firm grip on them.
If you're ever in an argument and Entropy winds up looking staid and temperate in comparison, it might be time to cut your losses and start a new thread about something else :)

If there is a small market for something, it doesn't mean it's necessarily a bad idea economically to go after that market. There are zillions of niche industries out there, and the world would be boring without them.
