Writing about religion...

This is not too far away from many things done/researched today, so hope it qualifies.

By the thought that all our actions are the result of 2 major factors each decided into smaller factors the believers are trying in all aspects of their lives to understand those two factors.

1:  Genetics - We are the genetic result of the merging of to sets of genes. These genes determine, amongst other things, temperament, moods and other psychological mechanisms.
2:  Experience - Our past experience shape our reactions and perceptions today.
(3: The belief that these two factors are the sole factors deciding our reaction patterns and psychological patterns excludes free will)

It started out merely as a philosophical debate but the development in areas such as mathematics and psychology gave way to some advanced computational models describing human behavior. The idea that our actions could be quantified and described mathematically combined with increased understanding of the mechanics of genetics led to the belief that all our future could be computed based on our genes and all previous experiences.

If we get maimed by dogs as a child we will be afraid of dogs later in life. If we are raised in a certain way, we will act accordingly later in life. So understanding the previous experiences and the way they are weighed in the development of the human psyche we can determine future reaction patterns. When we can predict future reaction patterns, how can free will exist ? It cannot.

This has lead to two different 'ways' within the religion of determinism.

1: The followers of this 'way' - 'the way of enlightenment' seek to understand themselves fully. To truly comprehend and understand each and every one of their actions in the light of past events. When then experience an emotion, they examine it and tries to determine where it came from and what past experiences has led to the feeling and the reactions in the first place. Only by truly knowing oneself, knowing why one act as one does will we be free. Only by truly knowing our past, and thus truly understanding the road we will travel in the future, will we be free to experience the way there. Absolved from the choices of the future by already knowing the outcomes of them we can partake in the enlightenment the journey will bring us.

2: These followers are perhaps not as much followers as they are opposition against Determinism. They have devoted their life and belief to randomness. The simple doctrine is that when true randomness is found it will prove that there is free will. If it cannot be predicted, there must be something else determining the outcome, and that is free will. Although they are opposite to Determinism, many of the same mechanics are involved in both. On their search for Random they have to find a way to see if something is Random or not, and in tat process all things not Random will fall into the realm of Determinism. Even though they use the same methods in their search for Random most of the time of these followers is spent on the search for Random in it's most pure form. A base Random.

This is a short description, but both can naturally be elaborated. As a religion this is fairly academic without wars or violence. the battlefield is the labs, the philosophical debates and the computer models.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn P&P RPG?

I have not read up on GURPS, and know very little about vampire except from what i have already told. I merely liked the way vampire incorporated different skillsets.

As to the misting/mistborn, there is no reason not to have both. The way they are played will be up to style. The players could all be mistings working together and gaining experience in their ability, and in the end of the scenario/campaign, they are up against a mistborn or two.  If they work well together, they will be able to beat the mostborn(s) but if they throw themselves aimlessly at the mistborn(s) they will probably die. The whole idea can be turned on it's head - especially if the party of players are not big, or the group are somehow split. The players are mistborn and are confronted by a group of mistings that are working well together.

I see no reason to not incorporate both.

Inquisitors. We know next to nothing. There is nothing we can do at the moment.

As with every adaptation from book to any other media, we could make some small changes and not be entirely true to the story it is derived from. If we take kelsier and Vin and place them as the pinnacle of mistborn ability, a mistborn could start out extremely weak. Remember that Kelsier trained for a long time to achieve the skill Vin attained quickly.

So the players could be mistborn, just start out extremely weak. I know that we have talked D20 all along, but the rules from Vampire lets the players play vanpires, and have differens skillsets they can put points into at level-ups. So a mistborn would start with zero points in all metals, which gives the player only the weakest of abilities, but as they level up, they can distribute points among the different metals.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Ashfalls
« on: May 01, 2008, 08:31:00 AM »
I too believe that the ashfalls are very significant.

Ash is the first words in the first book.

Why ash falls ? The volcanoes could have erupted and covered the sky, and it had stayed like that. No need to have ashfalls.

We tend to forget that plants are not green. Nothing is green. It is emphasized in MB1 (and Brandon points out in one of his annotations that it was important to remind us of that fact). That alone warrants some thought. Could we have ashfalls and plants are still green ? Probably. Then why not ?

Even though the ashfalls could just be part of the setting, i feel it is given too much description for it to just be setting. If it was just a setting, Brandon would not emphasize it so, and would not include it in his annotation.

If i was you, i would find out how much you want to play with the forbidden relationship. If it will be a big deal in the book, i would name the 'sentinels' so their name subtly plays into the forbidden relationship.  If the relationship is merely a subplot i would name then according to their area of expertise, and i would go with 'Administrator'. It is a powerful word to a powerful position and tells clearly that they are persons of beurocracy (sp?).

Or, you could start by having the original event (meteor) happen in the future and the timetravel set further in the future still. this would mean that you did not need to know as much about history, but since you and the readers do not share the history leading up to the big event, you would have to worldbuild that...

Besides from infinity it also denotes some kind of repetition. The decimals continues in the same order. A fine thought for WoT, but i do not think it is applicable here...

I wrote in here that i could not purchase or order any of Brandons books. The reason is that all (or practically) bookstores get their books from the same place and Brandon has no contract/agreement with that place. First i thought that it was done through the publisher, but as far as i understand Brandon and David Farland share Tor as a publisher and i can get Davids books without any problems.

I can only deduct that the individual writers has to make an agreement with the place my bookstores uses to get their books through...

Personally i find 'Dam' to be a bit too close to 'Damn', but that is just me :)

They could also call her 'Knowing One', 'Radiant One'

If you are planning to play with an 'old language' in your text, you can invent a word and say it means 'Beloved Teacher' or something, and then just use that one.

Also, i feel that the nick name should either play into her pursuit of knowledge or her vanity.

it seems that there would not be so many inquisitors if each one needed 8 mistings, a mistborn and 2 feuromachers.  8 rare people, 1 very rare person (and besides from a few - always noble) and 2 extremely rare people, mostly residing somewhere else than the lord ruler...

If it is seen as wrong by the law, society or common people that she is having an affair with a sentinel, it would be fitting that she be given the title 'Mother'. That helps establish the wrongdoing in the subconscious mind of the reader. If it is not seen as morally suspect, then you could find another name.

She could be called
'Light'
'Preserver'
'Ruler'
I feel that this nickname should hold some affection from the sentinels towards the Queen, however since her personality is only sketchy it is hard to know what she would find flattering - and it should be something she finds flattering, or she would just have changed it.

They could be called:
'Keepers'
'Administrators'
'Representative' (although that lends credence to them being elected which they are not)
'Knowledge' of (the area that person administrates) - Knowledge of State, Knowledge of War
