Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Life of Mistborn outside the Novels?
« on: February 01, 2009, 07:23:01 AM »
When you were talking about the "bookends of the novels", I thought about how cool it would be to have a Vin and Elend bookend set, or a Vin and Ore'seur bookend set. And as I'm sure other people have, I've thought hundreds of times about making a mistcloak.

One podcast I'd love to hear would be one on Brandon's essay about magic systems, but I'm not sure how the others would be able to contribute to that, having not read their works. (yet)
EDIT: Never mind. I found the one they did about that. I should probably listen to it.

I think that everybody's different in how much they remember of a fight.  Some people's brains work so that they remember everything, and other people's brains block what happened.  I've only ever been in one fight in my life, and I can remember the details, and the feeling, and I know I wasn't focused on anything except ending the smack talk, but I can remember exactly what happened, down to exactly where it was.

Writing Group / Poetry Contests
« on: January 15, 2009, 12:06:39 AM »
So, I need to enter a poetry contest by Friday, and I was wondering if anybody knows of a good contest for a high school student to enter that doesn't have any entry fees.  Please share any you can think of.

Writing Group / Re: How you handle WRITER'S BLOCK!
« on: January 13, 2009, 06:02:12 AM »
Whenever I'm suffering from writers' block, I find that the most effective way to fix it is to grab my iPod, put on some nice instrumental music, and either lie down in a dark room and just sit there and think, or take a walk around some unknown part of town and, again, think.

I think that if they do have to split it, both parts should be packaged together, to be as close to one book as possible.

I don't know about you people, but I'm just content to wait four weeks to find out.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Feedback: Is it good?
« on: August 15, 2008, 02:08:59 AM »
I'd suggest having an outline of how you want it to turn out, and give it to people to give feedback in chunks.  If you do it that way, you can get suggestions on what needs to be changed without needing to change the entire story, but you still have something to keep you from straying too far from what you wanted to write.  (Wow, I'm a hypocrite.  I never use an outline.  I agree with miyabi; it should be moved.)

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Lightsong (Blog Post Reference)

I really loved Lightsong.  Other than the Vasher chapters, the lightsong chapters were some of my favorites.  I agree with everybody who's said that a little more rebeliousness would be good.  That would truly perfect his character, in my opinion.

Welcome to the board. I understand about counting down; I have a big countdown clock  displayed as my background.
How did you manage that?  I've looked and looked, but I can't find any way to make something like that.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Kelsier the Ja
« on: June 11, 2008, 09:22:38 PM »
I was also reading about when Kelsier asked Sazed about the Valla, and how the religion lasted so long because their leaders had been martyred, and he didn't ask about anything else.  Brandon confirmed my theory in the annotations, when he basically said that Kelsier was trying to get historical proof that his plan would work.

Brandon Sanderson / Kelsier the Ja
« on: June 10, 2008, 11:11:07 PM »
I'm rereading The Final Empire right now, and I noticed an interesting tidbit of information.  Kelsier asks Sazed to tell him about another religion, and Sazed tells him about Jaism, where the leader, the Ja, gained more influence than he had ever had by being executed.  I noticed that this is extremely similar to how Kelsier ends up getting the army they need.  Could he have been inspired by the Ja, or was it coincidence?

(...Oh, sandman, wherefore art thou?)
Wherefore means why.

I'd probably have to say that Warbreaker, as far as I've gotten (I just finished chapter 46), barely beats Mistborn.  On the topic of Mistborn, I have to agree with Chaos.  The Final Empire is better than Well of Ascenscion, but WoA is stil pretty good.  In Warbreaker, I have to say I love the sense that there's always something I'm not understanding about some characters, like Denth, and it's harder to pick out than the relationship between Eragon and Murtagh in Paolini's Inheritance (which I figured out a month before Eldest), and I'm still left wondering about a lot of other things.  Now, as much as I would love to stick around and discuss the works of one of the most amazing authors of our time, Microsoft Word is calling, and I find it extremely hard to resist.

Brandon Sanderson / What happened to Kiin?
« on: May 27, 2008, 03:33:09 AM »
I just finished reading Elantris for my second time, and I realized that, although Sarene keeps thinking she'll ask Kiin what happened to his voice, she never gets around to it.  This might be mentioned in the ebook on Amazon, but I haven't read it.  Does anybody know?
