Brandon Sanderson / Re: The 13th and 14th metals?
« on: October 09, 2008, 04:47:59 PM »
It could be chromium and nichrome (a nickel/chromium alloy). Remember, the one must be an alloy of the other.

Yeah, that's what throws me off. Nichrome and Chromel are alloys of both Nickel and Chromium. Nichrome is 80/20% Nickel/Chromium while Chromel is 90/10% Nickel/Chromium. Following the other metals, it would make most sense for it to be Nickel and Chromel, because the Alloy is attributed to the primary component. For instance, Bronze is 88/12% Copper/Tin but is considered an alloy of Copper because it is the primary component.

It's Chromium and Nickel. BTW, to save the time in research, Chromium is a mutagen.

Kind of weird that he used real metals for all but two, Malatium and Atium.

The Mist spirit came to Elend after Vin left, so it's possible that there was another closeby well and it wanted to be released before Vin could release Ruin. I don't know why it wasn't more persistant though.

Here's a way out there theory. Kelsier received the scars on his arms by forcing them into crystal lined holes, searching for atium geodes created by mysterious drippings. Perhaps when this liquid is absorbed in his bloodstreem, it is a form of Hemalurgy, allowing him to see far into the future one time before burning up the liquid. He just happened to snap and have the ability to use Atium.

Not that I believe this theory, I just have a week to try to fit all of my musings into a big unified theory.

Oh, I get it.
And by the way Ookla, I think the reason Brandon chose the Spook chapter, is because it doesn't really give any of book 2's plotline away.  All you learn is that Spook survives until book three.  If he had put any of the sample chapters that we have read so far from hero of ages, there would have been spoilers (Ruin free, Elend the Mistborn, the TenSoon thing).

Two things. First, Brandon said that the bump in the prologue of book 1 explains the whole series, so I wouldn't rule out something minor in spooks chapter having huge implications. Second, it does mention that Elend is collecting cities, so we know he's not just hunkering down in Luthadel.

You'll have to review my suggestions to see if they are achnowledgement worthy.

Objection, your honor! This testimony is not relevant to the facts of this case. I move to have them stricken from the record.

Sustained. elmandr1, one more outburst like that and I will have the balif escort you off premises in handcuffs. Am I understood? Proceed counselor

Your honor, I would like to submit further evidence to my case that the defense has tried to keep burried but has recently surfaced.

Quote from: EUOL
I can't say too much without spoilers for Mistborn 3, but suffice it to say that if I were to write more books in this world, I would want to do some new things with the magic.  Some events at the end of Mistborn 3 have large ramifications on the way the magic works and the way the setting would proceed.

I found a reference that applies here:

Quote
It wasn't much.  But, then, Vin wasn't sure she wanted to think about her mother all that much.  The woman had, after all, tried to kill Vin.  In fact, she had killed Vin's full sister(emphasis added).  Only the actions of Reen, Vin's half brother(emphasis added), had saved her.
P. 42, WoA, paperback (Chapter 5)

This quote makes it clear that the sister was fully her sister, but Reen only her half-brother.  Now that I look at it, the phraseology is slightly awkward; the relationships must be important...

So with Vin referring to her as her baby sister (in another quote), it either means that Vin is older and most likely not a twin or she is a twin and Brandon was giving a timeframe for when Vin got her earring.

:( I am pretty sure I used that "hearsay evidence" to defend my case, your Honor.

Objection, your Honor! Counsel is being argumentative.

Quote from: Judge Reinhold
Counsel, I fail to see how Mr. Reaves is being argumentative; please explain your objection.

Your honor, the defense's position is that my evidence, which Mr. Reaves relies upon but withheld from the proceedings, signifies that the magic system must remain intact because of the possibility of a sequel. It is my contention that it would take an ambitious plan, for lack of a better phrase, to create said sequel. My stance is not whether there will or will not be a sequel, but based upon evidence I submitted, creating one would be a difficult endeavor. It is up to the forum to decide what makes it difficult and they won't come to the correct conclusion with the defense leading witness testimony and obscuring evidence.

Quote from: Judge Reinhold
Sustained, the defenses argument will be stricken from the record.

Thank you, your Honor.

Anyway, the chapter 4 chapter bump was an important one.

Hmmmm, 'was'. Does that  signify that it is in regards to a topic that we have discussed ad naseum and is now irrelevant?

I don't think that Allomancy/Hemalurgy/Feruchemy will disappear; after all where is the potential for continuing the series? (As has been hinted at.)

I would like Exhibit A entered into the record:

Quote from: Ookla the Mok
Brandon does have a plan for how he might continue the Mistborn series one day. When he mentioned it to me, it made me really, really excited. It's an extremely ambitious plan.

Ladies and gentlemen of the forum...

Quote from: Reaves
I object! This is nothing but heresay.

Your honor, according to the Civil Evidence Act 1995, In civil proceedings, evidence shall not be excluded on the ground that it is heresay.

Quote from: Judge Reinhold
Overruled. Please continue VegasDev.

Thank you, your Honor.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the forum, I think we all understand what Mr. Ookla meant by this statement, but for those simpler folks I will explain it to you. For Brandon to write a sequel, he had come up with a plan. Not just any plan, an ambitious plan. Furthermore, an ambitious plan was still not enough; he needed to come up with an extremely ambitious plan. Why would he need to go to such lengths? To bring magic back to a mundane world, of course.

Prosecution rests.

That all leads back to the question: How and when did Zane get his spike?

How about, if both Allomancy and Hemalurgy are powers that can be gained, is the same true of Feruchemy?

Regarding the seeker theory, Kelsier assumed that all Inquisitors were Seekers based solely on the fact that they could detect Allomancy, hunting down part-ska Allomancers and other Allomancy abusers. However he did admit that he could be wrong and that Inquisitors may have another power unrelated to Allomancy.

Oy! Full sisters means either twins, or that Prelan just didn't try very hard to kill her.

It's a tough call; Vin refers to her as her baby sister. What that means is anyone's guess.
