Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Comprehensive Hemalurgy Thread
« on: March 28, 2008, 06:33:45 PM »
My rereading of MB1 has told me some things about the Steel Inquisitors. One thing is that Inquisitors sleep a lot. This hasn't been talking about in this topic, so I'm bringing it up now. I would suspect that this is partially where they get their healing powers--by sleeping a lot. Or, it could be that those spikes really hurt and they need to sleep to get over the pain.

Maybe, also, we should discuss why separating the spikes on an Inquisitor kills them. It could lead to some Hemalurgical revelations.

I am also now thinking that Vin's mom's "blood sacrifice" to make Vin a supposed Hemalurgist is fairly... mundane. Inquisitors require a lot of blood and lots of victims to create--but then again, their Hemalurgy is no doubt far more powerful than Vin's. But still. More blood and more sacrifice means more Hemalurgical abilities.

Hemalurgy by being a skaa power is interesting... and I love it so much :D.

I had discussed this previously, but it didn't take off, probably because I suggested that the Inquisitors may not actually use Hemalurgy. I have my arguments, but I don't want to get into that. Anyway, here is one of my quotes relating to Inquisitors resting and being killed by pulling a spike.

Quote from:
Hemalurgy is used to create Inquisitors, but does that mean that the Inquisitors use Hemalurgy? If they do, then it appears Hemalurgy is a cross between Feruchemy and Allomancy. They can push pull metals and maybe burn atium, but they appear also able to store health like a feruchemist. I believe (I'll have to check when I get home) that it mentions somewhere that the Inquisitors need to rest for long periods of time, presumably to store up health. The rod that is pulled from their backs that kills them probably stores this health. I can't wait for HoA, this speculating is killing me.

I had discussed this and other questions in this thread.

Here is an excerpt from one of my posts.

Quote from:
He escaped from a prison that held allomancers, so they must have some precautions in place to make it difficult for one man burning trace metals to escape. Sometime after escaping, he took Gemmel as a master to train him to use his allomantic abilities, which despite the fact that he possibly killed 'many men' using said abilities, still needed to be pushed off the wall. And Vin who had years of self training, appeared to be a quick learner by Kelsier's estimation, even though Kelsier himself would have had hours.

Here is Brandon's response (took him long enough )

Quote from:
This is a very interesting discussion; thanks for posting it VegasDev.  The silence, however, was simply because I was watching to see what people said before giving any answers.

And, I still can't give many without spoilers.  Let me say this: Kelsier had help, both realizing that he had snapped and finding metals.  The man who trained him in Allomancy was involved in this, and it's all wrapped up in how Kelsier discovered the Eleventh Metal in the first place.

I MAY write this story someday.  If I do, it will make its way onto my website, perhaps after being sold as an Amazon Short for a while, kind of like I did with the ELANTRIS short.  There's not much more info in Book Three about this, unfortunately--just a couple of oblique references.  If you can remember until next October, the poke me after you've read MISTBORN 3, I'll give a more complete explanation.

It just seems like too much work doing something that a coinshot could just come along and kill you with. Interesting discussion but impractical usage in an imaginary world.

What we really need to discuss is why they don't have mass transit pump cars, or maybe I missed it. ;)

It's possible, but it's also possible she just figured things out on her own. She was only able to defeat the Lord Ruler by drawing on the mists, without the earring in her ear. She could have easily died; there was no voice telling her what she needed to do leading up to that moment.

I had asked Brandon this question some time ago and here was his response, read into it what you will:

I suspect that she would see the kandra wearing its true body-this will be explained in book 3 (wink wink).

No VegasDev. If Vin's mom was controlled by anything, it's Ruin. You know why? Ruin wants to keep Vin alive. Ruin chose Vin to be the false Hero of Ages so she could release Ruin.

So because Ruin wants Vin alive it is not possible that Preservation also wants her alive and also played a role in her surviving? Because Ruin wants her alive she is automatically the False Hero of Ages? If that's the case, I am not looking forward to book 3, because it's obvious that Vin's only contribution to the series is freeing Ruin and destroying the world.  ;)

A few other questions:

How did Vin's mother hear the voices as well. Was a ritual using Hemalurgy done on her or is this even a prerequisite?

It seems that the Inquisitors had been looking for Vin since she was but a babe. You would think that if Ruin was speaking to Vin's mother as well as the Inquisitors, they wouldn't have needed to look because they would know exactly where she was. Was it actually Preservation communicating with Vin's mother? Was Preservation speaking with Vin's brother, telling him to keep Vin alive, make her tough, etc?

Also overused would be prophet, but it's ironic in a way. You have to spend your profit to be a prophet.

Edit: Breeze would say something like "Never gamble with a prophet, because that's just what they'll do."

Whoa... I missed the thing about the spike too.
How is this possible??? I'm such a thorough reader...

I'd have to go back and read but I didn't think it said "spike" even though that's what I assumed it was. I thought it used a different word, more like a bump or protrusion.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: New Mistborn One Cover Art

I like this cover about even with the other paperback which had lightning, ravens and a fuggly vin (none of which are in the book), but I like the hardcover the best.

I don't know if I would pick up a copy of this book if it was the first time looking at a Sanderson novel though. It doesn't show any action, has the "bargain bin" labeling and almost looks like it might be a love story as opposed to a heist to overthrow the Lord Ruler. Might as well have Vin putting her arm around Elend with his shirt half way off and wind blowing his hair.  :P

I just figured it out. With the increased speed, strength and stamina, a thug should be able to hold two feather dusters in his hands and flap his arms fast enough to make himself fly. So that just leaves being able to smell better, cloud his allomantic abilities and find others that were burning before becoming a poor man's Mistborn.

Like I said, I chose thug. Here are the reasons I did not choose the others.

Coinshot's are cool only because they can fly, but thugs can probably jump pretty far/high when flaring. Coinshots can shoot metal to take people out, but a thug could carry a crossbow or even throw something fast enough to kill someone with the strength and speed they have and they are not limited to metal which can be deflected. If anyone has seen Randy Johnson hitting a pigeon while pitching, you'll know what I mean. Lurchers can do pull ups and steal your money, that's about it. A thug can do both of those things. :)

Soothers/Rioters are pretty cool because they can manipulate people's emotions, but I think this is something that a thug could learn to do without allomancy, but obviously not to the same extent. What made Breeze great was not his allomantic ability, but his ability to read outward expressions.

A smoker is worthless by himself, but helpfull with a team. A seeker can find other allomancers but not if they have a smoker. Vin was the only Allomancer that could pierce a copper cloud. So in a sense, Smoker and Seekers cancel each other out.

Tineye's are cool because they can see, hear and smell real well. The other senses aren't as usefull. A thug could carry a spyglass and a hearing horn, although it would attract a little attention but a smelloscope hasn't been invented yet in their world so give the edge to Tineye.

So, of the base 8 mistings, the thug is the best in my opinion. A thug can learn techniques or carry instruments that would allow him to have similar abilites as the other mistings. The others can pump iron, do a bunch of plyometric training, etc. but they can't learn to take a sword in the gut and still move when all conventional wisdom says they should already be dead.

For all we know, there are a bunch of them walking around, they just aren't seen because they can get out of your line of site just before you look there.

I would have to be a thug. It is the one metal that gives you the most benefits. It's like carrying a sword that was +10 to Dexterity, Agility, Stamina and Speed, with Health regeneration in addition. The ONLY thing that could make this sword better is if it had charges of Mordenkainen's Faithful Watchdog.

When I can have all this, why would I want to exchange it for one with only +10 to Charisma or Intelligence?
