I have worked in technical support and customer service for the past 5 years, so I know what its like to be very hesitant to tell a customer "no" or "its not going to work" or "I can't help you." In fact, more often than not responses like that will only get you in trouble with your superiors. You have to lie outright and convince the customer that, despite their extreme stupidity and the fact that their computer is 10 years old, there is indeed a chance of getting everything on their computer working perfectly again.

But in many corporate IT departments, you can actively solicit requests for fixing things, and then deny said requests without any logical explanation, and spend the time you'd otherwise be spending on fixing that problem watching a movie or ordering pizza. Which you can afford, since you get paid more than the price of the pizza during the time it takes you to eat it.

This isn't the case with all IT departments, of course, so if you work in IT and this description doesn't apply to you, then good for you. And I offer my condolances.

Yeah I'm sure it'd be cool, it just doesn't fit too well with my Plan. (Note: That was my Plan, not my Evil Master Plan. That comes later.)

What's this? / Re: How about running a Matrix game?
« on: May 24, 2003, 12:10:17 AM »
I suppose there's no reason we can't run a game of The Matrix from inside The Matrix.

Which brings up another interesting question -- theoretically, wouldn't it be possible for virtual computers to take over inside the real Matrix and virtually enslave the virtual human race? And, given enough processing power, couldn't those virtual computers construct a virtual Matrix to virtually create a virtual world as a diversion?

And couldn't the whole process continually repeat itself, until the real Matrix crashed from excessive processing load? Now that's what I'd do, if I were Neo..

But yes, a storytelling/diceless game of the Matrix sounds cool -- although I agree with SE that it would be tough to treat a "one-shot" forum game as one-shot, since even those short games would probably last several weeks or months on a forum.

Same here. I've actually set to work three times to develop something like this, but always get sidetracked -- and lose interest because I'd have to develop it alone.

I'm really quite experienced with PHP, so if you'd be developing it in that, I'd be interested in helping out, if you needed it.

We never played Thundercats or Starwars or GI Joe. We had our own.. erm, thing.. called "Blaster Kids." It was actually pretty impressive, for a bunch of kids... there was this wizard that gave us various save-the-world type assignments, which were invariably interrupted by hordes of goblins. Although it wasn't fantasy, if anything it was sci-fi. We even had our own ranking system.

Although we invented it about 10 years prior to the show, I suppose it was sort of like Powerangers -- though it didn't involve transforming into various gigantic robots and fighting towering Godzilla dolls. Frankly, it was much, much cooler than Powerrangers. And I don't just say that because I'm biased.

We also didn't need stupid catch phrases or pathetic colorful costumes. We figured we were cool enough already.

It's kind of funny, I actually have been considering applying for a content designer position at Turbine Entertainment. If I did apply, actually got the job, and were still around in 2005, I'd have an opportunity to help make this MMORPG as open-ended as possible.

I've got my cover letter/resume written up and everything. Only problem is, I really don't like the idea of moving to Boston.. :(

I suspect SE is right about that. And I have to agree it could be handy.

I don't particularly care whether reviews have screenshots or not. It might be nice to see what a product looks like, but its not critical. I was just trying to point out that there are simple options for achieving that objective if fell decides it would be a good idea.

And the thumbnails is probably the best way to do it -- it is very easy with PHP to auto-generate thumbnails.

Supposedly there actually was an issue with The Little Mermaid on the cover of the original release of the video, which was later changed do to complaints. Thats more of a rumour, but considering Disney's track record, it wouldn't surprise me.
