Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Comprehensive Hemalurgy Thread
« on: July 16, 2008, 06:22:12 AM »
Then the question is, why use feruchmists?  What's the benefit??

Based on the "hemalurgy is stealing power" theory I think feruchemists make lots of sense.   If using (Skaa) alomancers steals the alomancy power, then it makes sense that using feruchmests would mean that it steals their power and gives it to the inquisitor.  That would make some pretty bad ass inquisitors.

Just a quick update.  It looks like me going in time and time again asking for Brandon's Books might of had some effect, as the local Borders (which never has stocked him well, if at all) finally saw the error in their ways and today had a pretty decent amount of shelf space dedicated to Brandon's books.   They had at least as many copies as some of the really popular authors (Martin, Rothfuss, etc) if not more.

I thought I'd show them that they made the right decision by picking up more copies of the MB paperbacks and a copy of Elantris.

My apologies for the confusion. After I read the Well of Ascension I wanted to read the sample chapters that were mentioned in the back of the book. I couldn't find them on Brandon's site so I mailed him to ask after the whereabouts of the sample chapters. Brandon was kind enough to mail them to me and I thought he had also uploaded them all to his site. Though I just checked and it's only the Prologue so far, with the other chapters coming later.

I have to say this makes me feel quite special. That doesn't happen too often in my life. Thank you for that Brandon!   :D

Yeah, Brandon is pretty awesome in this way.  I don't know of any other Authors that are so willing to put their stuff out there for other people to read like Brandon does.

There is even a full copy of MB3: HOA floating around out there that one of his fans won at the pre-release of MB2.   Everyone that bought a copy of MB2 was entered in a raffle, and then he raffled it off along with a few other things.  Aside from being a one of a kind copy that was printed out with hand written red editing marks on it, it was also signed by Brandon and I believe he said it was the first copy of MB3 to be signed ever.   So one (insanely) lucky fan was holding a full copy of MB3 before the populous even got a chance to read MB2.

Totally not fair.
I concur.

Your tellin' me.  The ticket that won was 1 number lower than mine (i.e. the guy in front of me in line got it).

Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Comprehensive Hemalurgy Thread
« on: July 11, 2008, 01:17:30 AM »
I think the Hemalurgy connection to blood isn't as strong as the general consensus seems to think.

We know that originally, Brandon had the second system (now Feruchemy) originally called Hemalurgy.  I don't remember the exact wording (but I am sure someone can find it) but I think Brandon mentions something along the lines that he feels Hemalurgy fits a little better with the third system than the second, and then looks for a different name for the second.

I think the "Hema" reference could just be because it's a bloody process (which we now know for sure according to the prolog).

I don't think "Hema" implies that blood is a large part of the magic system.  It seems like if that was the case, he would of called it Hemalurgy from the beginning, rather than coming up with the name and using it for the second system.

I'm not sure where the Tensoon/Elend stuff came from as well, however, I can verify that Tensoon will have his own PoV chapters in the 3rd book.  Brandon mentioned this at a book signing in Denver last year.  He also said it would be a "War Epic" and mentioned a few other things that I think are now common knowledge (such as it taking place a year after the second one).

On Amazon there is cover art for the next Alcatraz book.   It looks interesting, kind of sci-fi-ish.

I hope there is a high res image somewhere so we can start speculating.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn as a Video Game
« on: June 23, 2008, 07:41:48 PM »
I know one of the most of the discussion here has been related to how the interaction between steel/iron would play into effect, since that is a big part of what would be the combat system.  I think it's particularly difficult to imagine how the controls for this aspect of the game would function.

Thus, I think people might find this interesting.  It's a game company doing the new Spider Man game.

The big selling point of this game seems to be that the combat system works as it should with Spider Man.  I think this is similar to how the push/pulling could work in a Mistborn game.  It will be interesting to follow this game and see how it turns out.

I got my copies from amazon but haven't checked through them yet.

Does anyone know if the text is at all different (ie errors corrected) in either book?

For the people who did find them at Borders, where were they?   Just in the fantasy/sci fi section or "new paperback release" or a separate display?

Books / Re: Anyone Try the Kindle?
« on: June 04, 2008, 10:58:35 PM »
I'm in the same boat.  I love the idea of being able to buy a book in an instant, anywhere I am, and carry my collection with me.  The main reason I'm staying away from it right now is that "first generation hardware" thing.  I think when the next release comes out to fix some of the common complaints, I may give it a shot.

It's kind of funny that many people have said they've never seen one.  I sure haven't.  Though it looks like Amazon just started a new "program" where you can see a kindle in your area via user handled kindle meetup groups.

I think one of the most excited parts of Kindle will be the Digital Text Platform (http://dtp.amazon.com/mn/signin).  It's basically a way for anyone to publish their work on Kindle (and profit from it directly).  I think this has a TON of potential and I hope that a lot of amature writers begin using it (as well as some big names).

This idea is kind of the book equivalent to what Radiohead did with their last album release.

Brandon Sanderson / Brandon's new paperback releases
« on: June 04, 2008, 09:31:09 PM »
Has anyone picked these up yet?  I stopped by the local Borders to try and grab them.  The computer said they had 9 MB2 and 6 of MB1 in stock, but no one was able to find them anywhere.  They had 2 copies of the old MB1 paperback, but none of the new ones.  We also checked the new paperback releases sections and wandered around the store looking for a display.  No luck.  That makes the 3rd time I've gone to that Borders looking for Brandon's books and returned empty handed.  I don't think I'll be going back there for anything.  I ordered 2 copies off amazon yesterday, but it looks like they might take a few days to ship.  Does anyone know if those will still count towards the first week sales numbers?

I know they have new cover art but is anything else different?  There were some mistakes made in MB1 that made it into the hardcover and first paperback version, does anyone know if they have been fixed in this version?  Anything else about them that's different?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Ruin and Preservation
« on: June 02, 2008, 11:27:19 PM »
Feel free to shoot this down, just another random thought, what if the mist spirit is the lord ruler?  I know the y existed at the same time back in alendi's day, but maybe that mist spirit vanished once there was no danger of ruin being released, and now that there is danger again the lord ruler replaced that old spirit.  Doesn't really make sense, but waht do you guys think of it??

It seems to me that the most likely guess for the Mist Spirit is Preservation.   First, we can assume that Preservation and Ruin are opposites.  It seems like Ruin is an actual entity of some sort, since he talks and escapes.  Not quite a person, but also not purely a force.  Something in between.  if that's the case, it's likely that Preservation is something similar.

We also know that the spirit seems to want to keep people away from the Well, which is where Ruin escapes from.  If they are opposites, it would make sense that Preservation would be trying to prevent people from going there.

I think all that is fairly well supported, but there is also some more "crazy" links that can be made.

First, the Mist Spirit seems to know what will make Elend a Mistborn.  There is an obvious connection between Mist Spirit and Mistborn and the Mist.

If you take the simple route, and just tie all that togeather.  It would mean that Preservation is the Mist Spirit, the Mist Spirit is also the Mist, and Mistborn are closely related to all that.  So that also means Preservation is the mists (or has something to do with it) and Mistborn are part of Preservation.

If this is something that has been in the works for that long, then I think I know which series it is.  Brandon mentioned something similar briefly at a signing in Denver.

If that's the case, I hope it does go through, as I think it will translate great to the world of cinema.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mysterious Reen ?
« on: May 24, 2008, 01:40:40 AM »
I'm upgrading our thread  :)

In my re-read (very slow, I tell you !), I have noticed a few things regarding Reen.

First, the book talks of Reen's words till Vin puts on her earring and then... it's Reen's voice, sometimes Reen's words, but it continues more and more with Reen's voice only as "a voice in her head".

Second, when Vin wants to flee Carmon's lair she gets her personal possession. Her earring of course, pebbles from each place she passed through with Reen... and Reen's bit of obsidian. Now, Reen is a very practical man so, I don't think he kept that nice little thing just for sentimental value or memories of travels. So I checked in the dictionnary (I confess, I am ignorant of a lot of things lol) to discover that obsidian have a magma origin. Now, isn't it interesting all of a sudden ? I bet it's related somehow to the Ashmounts. I keep on looking for clues but does anyone remember anything about this or have any thoughts we could explore ? I keep on looking for clues.

I noticed the same thing when I last read MB1.  The words chosen to describe when Vin "hears" Reen are very particular.

I'm going on the record as a member of the "Reen's voice = Ruin via the Earing" group.
