Books / Re: How many books to do you read?
« on: January 14, 2008, 06:37:04 AM »
I can only read one fiction book at a time.  I can trade off with a nonfiction book but I don't really like to.  When I do that I don't feel like I'm making any progress in either one of those books.

If you want to include audiobooks I can listen to fiction book even if I'm reading one already.  It's much easier if their different genres but I was listening to one of the Harry Potter books while I was still reading one of the Wheel of Time books (not at the same time obviously).

If I'm reading a book for the first time I don't like to be reading/listening to anything else.  I want to experience the story pure and whole without getting details or plot points mixed up with something else I'm reading/listening to.

Rants and Stuff / Re: My Experience with Jury Duty
« on: January 04, 2008, 11:53:39 PM »
I've had various experiences with Jury Duty.

1st time:  cancelled before I had to go
2nd time: sat around all day in the waiting room and was never called
3rd time: forgot about it (it was on a monday) they told me to show up on tuesday.  I got called first with every group but never picked
4th time: got called for a case (DUI, assault on a policy officer, etc) that was for a co-worker.  I was dismissed
5th time: waiting almost all day before I was finally picked at the end of the day.  Got picked for the jury, trail started the next day.  Had to report at 10am.  Trail started at 11am.  Prosecution rested at 11:45am so we broke for lunch until 1pm.  After lunch we sat in the jury room at the courtroom until 2pm before the bailiff came in to say there was a mistrail and we could go home.

Everytime I changed my car resgistration, driver's license or voter registration it seemed I would get a jury summons within 2 months.

The Pelican Brief  by John Grisham

How one law student can make connections between things that fully trained lawyers and federal agencies couldn't is beyond me.  And Grisham changed the pov character 3 times in a single paragraph right in the middle of the climax.  I think I must have read that paragraph 20 times before I finally figured out who was saying what.

My Antonia  by Willa Cather

I didn't think I would like this book (had to read it for a college class) but by the time I finished I loved it.  It wasn't one that I just couldn't put down but after I finished it I was glad I had read it.

The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury

I stopped reading this book with only 40 pages left to go.  I just couldn't take it anymore.  I don't remember what it was exactly (I read it many years ago) but I just couldn't read those last 40 pages.   Up until then I've loved everything of Bradbury's that I've read.  Now I'm a little more cautious.

Books / Re: What books did you grow up on?

I had a hard time learning how to read.  I went to kindergarten in Colorado where they didn't believe in teaching how to read until 1st grade.  All you had to do to graduate kindergarten was write your letters and numbers.  We moved to WVC Utah and when I showed up to 1st grade they expected you to know how to read basic words and such.  My parents didn't agree with their method of teaching me to read (sight recognition) because I was behind but they didn't want to stigmatize me by putting me in a special class.  I learned to read but very slowly and painfully.

By fourth grade the school implemented a policy that every student must read to a parent for 15 minutes every day (for younger students who didn't know how to read they had to be read to).  I picked the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books to read.  And bless my mother's heart because she sat there and listened while I read every single one of them.  By junior high I moved on to Agatha Christie books.  Read almost every one of those too before I got burned out on mysteries.

I heard there's going to be an IGMS anthology.  Do you know if your story is going to be in it?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: How did you find out about Brandon Sanderson?

After Elantris came out it was our book club selection on Wordtrip (a writing website I'm a moderator on) and our site admin raved about the book so I read it and loved it.  I met Brandon at LTUE once, briefly, but got the chance to interview him for our podcast It's the Story, Stupid during CONduit this past summer.  Mistborn:  The Final Empire was also a book club selection.

Scalzi might have beaten him to win the Campbell award but Brandon Sanderson gets to finish The Wheel of Time series.  I think that's infinitely better and going to have a lot more fans read your great books than some puny award.  Scalzi blogged about Alcatraz and your article on Pullman's work and censorship but so far no mention about this.  Sounds like he's jealous.

Wow, that is great news!!!  I don't think I could keep all those secrets for two years if I knew how everything was going to end.  I would just have to tell someone.  So . . . if you're looking for a sounding board I'm all ears.   ;D

I shreded a tire on my way home from work on Friday.  When I went to change it my spare tire was flat as well.  When I finally got my car to the shop on Saturday they said my rear brakes were 90% worn so I had to get those repaired as well.

I'm glad you mentioned the new title because I didn't even take in to account the title change when looking at the pictures.  Now that I do here's my thoughts.  When I see the name Mythwalker as the name of a story I think of of a Native American (NA) fantasy story.  Similiar to a Dreamwalker type of person.  When I look at the cover (and it had the name Mythwalker on it) I would definitely think it was a NA fantasy novel.

The tourquoise color on the dress especially points that way IMO and even more so when it's on the orange dress instead of the white one.  I don't have anything against NA fantasy fiction but it's not high up on my interest list.  It seems to be a VERY small niche of the general fantasy genre.  With the title Mythwalker and either one of those dresses on the cover (but especially the orange one) I think readers would think it's a NA fantasy and pass it over.

This thought process for readers might only occur in certain markets.  I live in AZ so that's why I picked up on it.  Of course there might be some people who pick up the book with that title and cover expecting a NA fantay and might be disappointed in that the story didn't meet that criteria (but not disappointed in BS's writing style I'm sure).

I prefer the white dress but I also think the breath should be more etherial than her hair.  I liked the drops of blood on the sword and I miss that with these ones (if it's there I just might have to blow it up to see it).

Okay, I'm dredging up an old thread so sue me.  I just have to tell you that I read "Tabloid Reporter" before I knew it was you who had written it.  I loved it.  When I saw it was you who wrote it I knew I recognized your name from somewhere.  I finally remembered it from conventions and here and I was right.  Great job.  I hope they tap you for more stories for IGMS.
