Im worried by the Amount of CG I've seen in the previews though. Indiana Jones is one of those movies that doesnt benefit a lot from CG.

« on: April 04, 2008, 08:44:57 PM »
I've cheated in a RPG before. Mostly its because I wanted a scene to look cool and most RPG's dont reward failure with cool. I say most because some just make the scene cooler. I like the yes you accomplish the intent of your roll, but there are consequences kind of failure. Like you kill the Orc, but rupture a potion on his body when you do dissolving your sword into goo.

Most of the time its because getting a character killed means playing catch up with everyone else in the game. Its sort of like level loss. Ok, now Im going to be one or two steps behind everyone for the rest of the game. Who wants to suddenly be relegated to sidekick after being a star.

Truly I have the gift.

Now Imagine Tony Shalhoub in the star role of the Furry, with Tim Curry as the Vampire.

Instant HIT!

Umm ...stupid english as a first language
...they can try to roll a conflict over again using a third kind of stat called a link.

Its basically raising the stakes. Kind of a crud I failed,... well I sacrifice my sons love to win. If you do win great, if you lose well you basically risked your sons love, so he doesn't love you anymore... now figure how that works into the story.

And awesome the author stopped by :D

Several games come to mind....

1. The Princes Kingdom
http://www.crngames.com/the_princes_kingdom/index
http://www.indiepressrevolution.com
Its designed for kids using the system Lumpley Games pioneered for Dogs in the Vineyard. Its mostly narrative and works well with kids do to low dice rolling and focus on moral choices and doing the right thing. All profits go to a children's charity too

2. Heroquest: The RPG
Also narrative and one d20 does it all.
High concept, but easy mechanics, plus a character creation system that lends itself to kids brains. 100 word descriptive keywords plus a make up stuff on the fly thing going. There is an excellent post about this game on RPG.net and how a GMing father ran it with his 4 year old to great effect.

3.Faery's Tale Delux
http://www.indiepressrevolution.com
http://www.firefly-games.com/
Also designed for kids but with the gaming powerhouse Robin Laws behind it... I havent played it but there are tons of real play examples on the Forge.

4.Zorceror of Zo, InSpecters, and basically anything rules light and narrative. Kids latch onto this stuff quick... plus there aren't a lot of rules "tricks" for them to forget.

with the exception of Heroquest these are all small press games and you can get a PDF copy of all of them. This means you can get away with a 10 dollar game... but the print copies aren't too costly either.

The Princes Kingdom is really awesome and I like it a lot. Its the one E was talking about earlier. Go check out all the actual play stuff on either RPG net or the Forge. Gaming with kids is fascinating because they don't react the same way we do to things. But order can be easy to lose. Its why I don't typically recommend stuff with tons of dice or mini's.... Stuff with one or two core mechanics is easy to explain and run and its fast. Trust me, if the kids get hooked veggie tales may go out the window and you may be gaming all the time.

Role-Playing Games / Re: D&D 4th edition??
« on: August 30, 2007, 02:08:40 AM »
So I read the class roles article, and it essentially says "we stole the skill system from Guild Wars." Which is fine, because that's a great skill system, it's just kind of funny to hear them describe it so closely without coming right out and saying it. Note that I'm not referring to the "you only get 10 powers at once" part of Guild Wars, just the skills themselves.

The dragon fight is interesting, not so much for the vast number of attacks it gets, but because it doesn't use any of them to cast spells. Monster Manual 5 talked about how dragons had become giant spellcasters who happened to look like dragons, and didn't really "feel" like dragons anymore. This new guy definitely feels like a dragon, and that's one change I'm very glad to see.

The Dungeon design thing is also a welcome change--an equal number of monsters and PCs instead of the PCs ganging up on a single monster is rarer than it should be.

What is Guild Wars skill system like? Never played it.

I'm holding my opinion for the release of 4e, its still to early for me to get excited or upset about it. When 3E was first released I was on my ship checking every freaking bookstore every time I came in port and spazzing when It wasn't in. That said I am mildly concerned that once I buy 4E Wizards will have 4.5 out 3-4 years after I buy it.
I would also like to say that telling someone that they don't have to play it and can keep going on and playing 3.5 while kind of true overlooks the fact that the bulk of people playing are going to switch to 4E also its kind of mean and antagonistic. I don't see a lot of folks playing second edition D&D in Game Parlor or 1st edition GURPS or even Star Wars D6 (and most folks feel d6 star wars is a superior game). It cuts down on play options and frankly getting 3 new core books could be the make or break point for old gamers. Me, Im a little ticked that I spent a lot of cash on Ebberon and know that I wont be able to use those books with 4E. If 4e is like Saga Star Wars then I do think I want to play, and Im not looking forward to getting Ebberon again financially. I think this move was more for new gamers though, not for us Groganards, basically its a now everyone has to start at 3 books again respawn. 90 bucks is way more affordable for youngsters than 3-500 bucks.
