Role-Playing Games / Runequest? Again, doesnt a liscense ever die...?
« on: August 13, 2006, 11:57:57 AM »
So, I've been out of the loop game wise for a bit, getting qualified as a container and facility inspector is time consuming, so imagine my surprise when I was walking through a local game store and I came across a new RPG, thats really an ollllld RPG. Runequest, I think this is like the 6th edition or something. Mongoose is making it, and it looks like they are doing it the same way the Warhammer Fantasy RPG is being made. Slim books, tightly edited and compact for a reasonable price. I havent seen more than a few previews but I think this might be a great game, though one tied closely to someone elses mythology. Still the next game to come out with the same rule set will be really interesting as well. Lankmahr.. the Fritz Lieber rpg. Im stoked... really stoked... and Im now digging through my pockets for loose change to pick up the book, you know for light reading...

I got my copy through MVgroup but its availible online at various torrent sites.

Rants and Stuff / Bush, who knew you were an environmentalist
« on: June 16, 2006, 09:59:53 PM »
So, yeah Im not ashamed to admit that my commander and chief and I don't see eye to eye on a lot. Still as a Coastie and someone who's seen the effects of ocean pollution, overfishing, and rogue drift nets I was somewhat stunned when our Pres created the worlds largest marine sanctuary the other day. And when I mean large I mean that its larger than 46 of the U.S. 50 states (not combined), and more than seven times larger than all the other 13 national marine sanctuaries combined. Words fail me.

He decided to do it after watching Jacque Cousteau's son's show on PBS (Ocean adventures).

The area of the pacific thats protected was destined to become a fishing wasteland, as its one of the more remote places on earth, Japanese and Chinese fisherman like to go there to drift net tons of fish... they can actually catch them there. Anyone whos ever done fishery patrol off of New England will know just how much damage drift nets have done in the space of two generations to thats areas fisheries.

So wow.

Mr. President, this non alcoholic beverage produced by Annheiser Busch is for you.

« on: June 05, 2006, 04:05:45 AM »
Powers in NE are used like magic in the main book right? I mean you dont burn power points for blasts and all do you? Cause all of those variables could suck.

Role-Playing Games / most creative use of R.Talsorians lifepath
« on: June 02, 2006, 03:31:05 AM »
spolier for the Artesia RPG review Im writing...

Artesia RPG uses the lifepath system from R. Talsorian in character creation, and it creates some really cool characters. Essentially everyone starts with the same stats... everything at 5 and by rolling lineage, special events, star sign and so on the characters develop quite nicely. Cultures provide some everyman skills and professions provide more options. But I hadnt ever really considered using the lifepath in a fantasy setting before.

The drawback is that there is no simple character creation, because for all starting characters you need to consult dozens of charts and roll the dice a lot. Still you'll know what happened in your characters last five years of life (or more depending on how many years you want to age them). I really really dig it.

rpg.net says it pretty good actually.
Quote
Generally, you start your character off with standard characteristics (5 across the board) and a set of standard skills. You'll then figure out what culture you're from, what your social standing is, and what your probable occupation is (based upon those of your parents).A variety of factors (familial lineage, birth signs, omens, childhood) may then change some of your basic characteristics. At this stage you'll also learn who your family is and what they think of you (using an extensive reputation system).

Then you go through your character's adult years one-by-one, starting with age 15. Each year you decide upon your current occupation, and then determine if there were any special events that year. The process will give you training points to put into your skills and arcana points, which can go into skills, characteristics, gifts, or bindings.

Video Games / Wii3
« on: May 12, 2006, 04:37:36 PM »
Or Wii at E3,... ok, I think Im starting to see the catchiness behind the name Wii or at least I dont hate it. Its funny how Nintendo, the underdog in platforms for a while has managed to create cool product after cool product. Its their willingness to embrace their own platform and come up with cool games that impresses me most. Wii is just that sort of machine. While I havent messed with the controllers yet I can easily see how fun Wii games can be.

Games I've seen demoed so far, Smash Brothers, Zelda, Metroid, tennis, golf and Excite truck. All of them look fun and all use the new controller in innovative ways. Using it to play tennis looked cool, and dont get me started on Zelda. Wow, from rowing a boat to shooting a bow to catching a fish, this looks like a great game. I havent seen enough of the new mario brothers game to form an opinion yet, but I really think Wii is the star of the show so far.
