Books / Twilight is NOT the worst book ever!
« on: November 19, 2009, 09:10:48 AM »

I've found something WORSE!  It's SOOOOO poorly written I can't even stand listening to it for more than five minutes.

It's called "Gamer Girl".  Here's someone reading it on YouTube.

Here's a quote:

Quote
Maddy’s life: not so rockin’. Her parents split, she’s stuck in a new, small town at a school full of Aberzombies and Haters, she has a crush on someone she really shouldn’t like, and she’s stuck with the nickname Freak Girl.

Sometimes it’s enough to retreat into her drawing – her Manga is totally important to her – but when she gets Fields of Fantasy for her birthday, she knows she’s found the one place she can be herself. In the game world, Maddy can transform from regular outcast high school student to Allora, a beautiful Elvin Princess with magical powers to take down enemies with a snap of her fingers and wave of her wand.

As Allora, Maddy can totally be herself. She spends a lot of time questing with Sir Leo, a brave knight who seems to really like Allora, and maybe even the IRL (In Real Life) Maddy. Allora’s virtual life is perfect, but a real gamer girl understands that real life comes first – Maddy knows she can’t escape from her IRL problems. She has to find ways to kick back at the Haters, rock her manga and find the new, real life friends she knows she deserves.

So I've been watching this one since it started showing.  I was wondering if anyone else is watching it?  I think Peter is, but I just wanted to know other people's opinions of it.

I personally really like it.  Though, I admit, it will be nice when they get the stupid ship fixed and like . . . that's not the focus of most episodes.

(It seems kinda ripped off Atlantis, but then again it's also the same type of situation.  Old something left out nowhere, but I am enjoying it so far. . . )

Also, we need a good enemy . . . . . . There isn't one so far.

Rants and Stuff / People who re-inforce stereotypes
« on: November 09, 2009, 06:58:42 AM »

Is it just me or is it extremely annoying when people seem extremely in  need of enforcing the stereotype of a group they belong to.

Examples:

Someone who shortly after coming out of the closet becomes that extremely bubbly "oh-mygaaawwwwwwwwssssh I totally love your haieeeeerrrr" type of gay guy.  Like they go out of their way to make gay comments or sound/act extremely gay.

The black person who dresses in absolutely obnoxious clothing and talks with a fake accent and acts like . . . . I dunno, just what you maybe expect to see in an older movie where they were making fun of black people.

The white person who feels the need to dress and act like a cowboy even though they grew up in the city.

I mean I'm not talking about the person that grew up in the way they are acting or the person who just is that way because slowly it just happened.

I'm talking about the people who fake it.  Like I remember my one friend, she was black and one year she acted just like any other person who had grown up in the same area we did.  Then after the summer she was that super stereo typical black person.

I just don't understand why people do those things.  I think it's annoying, because it's things like this that keep stereotypes floating around and gives them validity.

Anyone else have opinions on this topic?

Everything Else / philosophies relating too . . . .
« on: November 06, 2009, 08:51:50 AM »

OK, so I'm working on some evidence for debate.  Anyone know of good philosophers who said something along the lines of

"If you reduce how much of 'a' you have, people think you have 'b', and that 'b' is better than 'a'"

Dan Wells / I am not a serial (llama) killer
« on: August 18, 2009, 05:04:19 AM »
Ha ha.  This made me think of 'I am not a serial killer'. . . . you'll see why.

Just watch.

EDIT:  I think it had something to do with the llamas . . .

So I went to the local bookstore with my sister today.  I happen to know the manager.  I happened to walk past the sci-fi section and they didn't have any copies of Warbreaker.  I asked the manager and he said they didn't get any in and that it was probably on back order.

So he gets on the computer to look it up.  The book he finds is How to Make Dinasaurs or something similar to that by Brandon Sanderson that was released Tuesday. ha ha.

Brandon Sanderson / Warbreaker :: Release Party :: Extras
« on: May 25, 2009, 11:12:25 PM »
firstRainbowRose (Mi'chelle) and I (Chris) are planning some extra things for the Warbreaker release party.

We will have nametags for you TWGers.

We will have soda.

If everyone tries to bring an extra $2.50 we could order in some pizza for foodage.

Also I will be giving away a numbered copy of Mistborn: Hero of Ages (number 562).

Giving away will be done through people answering  a trivia quiz about EUOLs books.  I would like suggestions for questions along with the answers, please PM or email them to me that way they aren't just on the forums.

Those who get the highest scores (if there is a tie) will have their names put in a hat and we will draw for a winner.

This should extend through all the people that show up, until we run out of copies of the quiz.  After we hand out the last one, we will give an hour or so for people to finish them then we will start to correct them to weed out those who didn't do well.

We are also planning to have names to be drawn to create your "reborn (is that the right word?  Sorry I'm rushing I have to leave for work soon) name".  Suggestions for those could be PMed or email to firstRainbowRose.

Your help is much appreciated, also, if you have any other suggestions, please feel free to post them here or PM one of us.

Hope to see you all there!

Movies and TV / The Grudge 3
« on: May 25, 2009, 03:42:26 AM »
So, this is my second time watching the movie.  It is pretty amazing.  I am currently going through the special features.  It was filmed in Bulgaria.  o.O  I found that odd.  It would have been easier (I think) and probably cheaper to spend a couple days in Japan for the Tokyo scenes and then fly back to Chicago and do all the Chicago scenes. . . . but whatevs.  I can't wait for the next movie. :]

Books / I am very annoyed with Paolini
« on: May 14, 2009, 07:56:33 AM »
So, I was at the book store today and I saw a thing with the Inheritance Cycle books displayed.  Thinking that maybe it was something to do with an announcement for the next book, I asked the clerk about it, she said she knew nothing.  I get home and decide to check his site.  His site hasn't been updated since NOVEMBER 2008!

Now, I'm not a fan of his writing, but he is an amazing story-teller.  I love the story and the characters.  They are just extremely likable.

I disliked the fact that there was a 3 year (or something like that) gap between Eldest and Brisingr.  The fact that his site doesn't even really mention the fourth book, other than to announce that there was a fake Facebook page about a title and cover-art.

How does he expect his fans to even WANT to read his books if he does absolutely nothing to communicate with them?  It's extremely irritating. [/rant]

Rants and Stuff / This day just gets better and better
« on: May 01, 2009, 10:32:03 PM »
So first thing this morning I find out that my debit account has been compromised and I had to completely close the account as it was $600 something in the hole because I only had $100 in it and someone spent $700.

THEN I find out that there is a good possibility that my mother is going back to prison because she has been up to her old tricks again.  She is trying to cheat out the IRS and is giving fraudulent information to Health and Welfare.

Les Sigh.

Probably one of the best half-hour T.V. shows on these days.  It comes on on Showtime almost every night.  It's a show about a woman with D.I.D. (Dissociative Identity Disorder).  She struggles to try and live a normal life with her family while falling in and out of personalities. The family spends a good amount of time trying to deal with it as well.  The entire time everyone trying to sane.

Does anyone else watch it?  I absolutely love it, and I never paid attention before last night, but Steven Spielberge is actually the executive producer for the show. o.O
