Rants and Stuff / Avatar protest? Ranting
« on: December 18, 2009, 10:44:24 AM »

OK.  So I wasn't sure if I wanted to put this in the movies section or here.  I decided here because it's mostly a rant.

So there is a group of people who are wanting to protest the Avatar in these ways for this reason:

Quote
On Friday, December 18, 2009 thousands of people will be protesting the release of the James Cameron movie, Avatar. The purpose of the protest is as follows:

1) To make all people aware that heterosexual arrogance, assumptions or exclusions of alternative sexualities in movies is no longer acceptable. Diversity and tolerance are human rights.

2) To speak out for all gay, bi-sexual, genderless and transgender people who are not represented by any character in Avatar.

3) To educate people about Evolution and humanity's transition to transgenderism.

All protests will be peaceful and non-confrontational. Suggested methods of protest:

    * Stand outside of theaters with signs and pamphlets to express your views
    * Sit down in theater lobbies and do not move unless the police use force or violence upon you
    * Stand up during a viewing of Avatar and remain standing
    * Buy tickets to Avatar in bulk but do not attend showings. An empty theater sends a message
    * Bring your mate to the theater and show affection to each other.

Reminder: SILENCE = DEATH. We will be silent no more.

OK.  So

1) Pay attention to the previews.  In the previews they want to annihilate a group of people.  They send people in to try and coerce them into leaving or find out how to kill them or something along those lines.  THEN after they LISTEN they find out that they were WRONG ABOUT THEM and some want to help them.

So basically it's about taking the time to learn about someone or a group of people because you make a judgment about them. . .So how is this being overly heterosexually arrogant?  As far as I can see it's about accepting others and finding out the truth and not making assumptions which seems to be exactly the opposite of what this blog was saying.

2)Who cares!  Honestly, who's to say that one of the characters ISN'T les/gay/bi/trans.  Just because they don't openly go "OH HEY I'M THE GAY CHARACTER!" doesn't mean there isn't one there.  Also, how do you determine that from JUST the preview?  Dumb.  Also, why does it MATTER if there is a main lgbt character?

3)Uhm, what?  So you're saying that eventually ALL people will be born into the wrong gender?  Do you HONESTLY even know what the heck you're talking about?  Unless you meant androgyny, and you know, even so how do you KNOW that we will all move in that direction?  Granted there are more than there have been before, but that's because people have taken the time to LISTEN and LEARN before they make judgment which is what this movie seems to be about.

Truly, these people are faggots.  They don't deserve to be called lgbt.  They are straight up faggots.

I'm up all night programming.

What are your excuses?  I've seen at least 15-20 of you online in the middle of the night.

Brandon Sanderson / Most people say Kelsier wrong
« on: December 14, 2009, 09:37:14 PM »

So Brandon was asked at the last signing I went to.  He says he pronounces it wrong and says it "Kel-sea-er", but that the characters in the book pronounce "Kel-sea-ay".  Like a French name.  =]

Brandon Sanderson / Hoid Compendium :: Spoilers
« on: December 14, 2009, 06:23:31 AM »

Per suggestion of Mr. J in Natalie Perkins' thread Hoid?? I have brought all references of Hoid and his antics and put them in one big post for you all.

This post (And the next three.  [I happened to reach the post limit of 20k characters. . . . . .]) will be used to update all Hoid references as they are drawn to our attention.  The fifth post in this thread will be used to put generally supported theories or unconfirmed mentions of Hoid.

Or what about a revision of chapter one?  Find it here.

.::Elantris::.

Quote

"MAKE certain you deliver these tonight." Sarene said, pulling the lid closed
on the final box of supplies.

The beggar nodded, casting an apprehensive glance toward the wall of Elantris, which stood only a few feet away. "You needn't be so afraid, Hoid." Sarene said. "You have a new king now.
Things are going to change in Arelon."

Hoid shrugged. Despite Telrii's death. the beggar refused to meet with Sarene
during the day. Hoid's people had spent ten years fearing Iadon and his farms;
they weren't used to acting without the enveloping presence of night, no
matter how legal their intentions. Sarene would have used someone else to make
the delivery, but Hoid and his men already knew how and where to deposit the
boxes. Besides, she would rather the populace of Arelon not discover what was
in this particular shipment.

"These boxes are more heavy than the ones before. my lady," Hoid noted
astutely. There was a reason he had managed to survive a decade on the streets
of Kae without being caught.

"What the boxes contain is none of your business," Sarene replied, handing him a pouch of coins.
Hoid nodded, his face hidden in the darkness of his hood. Sarene had never
seen his face. but she assumed from his voice that he was an older man.

.::Final Empire::.

Quote
Hoid calmly put away the pipe, then climbed to his feet— though that didn’t make him much taller. The scrawny bald man bowed deeply in the misty night. “Greetings, my lord.”

Kelsier paused in front of the man, arms tucked carefully inside his mistcloak. It wouldn’t do for a street informant to realize that the unidentified “nobleman” he was meeting with had the scars of Hathsin on his arms.
“You come highly recommended,” Kelsier said, mimicking the haughty accent of a nobleman.

“I am one of the best, my lord.” Anyone who can survive as long as you have must be good, Kelsier thought. Lords didn’t like the idea of other men knowing their secrets. Informants generally didn’t live very long.

“I need to know something, informant,” Kelsier said. “But first you must vow never to speak of this meeting to anyone.”

“Of course, my lord,” Hoid said. He’d likely break the promise before the night was out—another reason informants didn’t tend to live very long. “There is, however, the matter of payment....”

“You’ll have your money, skaa,” Kelsier snapped.

“Of course, my lord,” Hoid said with a quick bob of the head. “You requested information regarding House Renoux, I believe....”

“Yes. What is known about it? Which houses is it aligned with? I must know these things.”

“There isn’t really much to know, my lord,” Hoid said. “Lord Renoux is very new to the area, and he is a careful man. He’s making neither allies nor enemies at the moment—he’s buying a large number of weapons and armor, but is probably just purchasing from a wide variety of houses and merchants, thereby ingratiating himself to them all. A wise tactic. He will, perhaps, have an excess of merchandise, but he will also have an excess of friends, yes?”
Kelsier snorted. “I don’t see why I should pay you for that.”

“He’ll have too much merchandise, my lord,” Hoid said quickly. “You could make a clever profit, knowing that Renoux is shipping at a loss.”

“I’m no merchant, skaa,” Kelsier said. “I don’t care about profits and shipping!” Let him chew on that. Now he thinks I’m of a Great House—of course, if he hadn’t suspected that because of the mistcloak, then he doesn’t deserve his reputation.

“Of course, my lord,” Hoid said quickly. “There is more, of course....” Ah, and here we see it. Does the street know that House Renoux is connected to the rumblings of rebellion? If anyone had discovered that secret, then Kelsier’s crew was in serious jeopardy. Hoid coughed quietly, holding out his hand.

“Insufferable man!” Kelsier snapped, tossing a pouch at Hoid’s feet.

“Yes, my lord,” Hoid said, falling to his knees and searching about with his hand. “I apologize, my lord. My eyesight is weak, you know. I can barely see my own fingers held in front of my face.”

Clever, Kelsier thought as Hoid found the pouch and tucked it away. The comment about eyesight was, of course, a lie—no man would get far in the underground with such an impediment. However, a nobleman who thought his informant to be half blind would be far less paranoid about being identified. Not that Kelsier himself was worried—he wore one of Dockson’s best disguises. Beside the beard, he had a fake, but realistic, nose, along with platforms in the shoes and makeup to lighten his skin.

“You said there was more?” Kelsier said. “I swear, skaa, if it isn’t good...”

“It is,” Hoid said quickly. “Lord Renoux is considering a union between his niece, the Lady Valette, and Lord Elend Venture.”

Kelsier paused. Wasn’t expecting that... “That’s silly. Venture is far above Renoux.”

“The two youths were seen speaking—at length—at the Venture ball a month ago.”

Kelsier laughed derisively. “Everyone knows about that. It meant nothing.”

“Did it?” Hoid asked. “Does everyone know that Lord Elend Venture spoke very highly of the girl to his friends, the group of nobleling philosophers that lounge at the Broken Quill?”

“Young men speak of girls,” Kelsier said. “It means nothing. You will be returning those coins.”

“Wait!” Hoid said, sounding apprehensive for the first time. “There is more. Lord Renoux and Lord Venture have had secret dealings.”

       What?

“It is true,” Hoid continued. “This is fresh news—I heard it barely an hour ago myself. There is a connection between Renoux and Venture. And, for some reason, Lord Renoux was able to demand that Elend Venture be assigned to watch over Lady Valette at balls.” He lowered his voice. “It is even whispered that Lord Renoux has some kind of...leverage over House Venture.”

What happened at that ball tonight? Kelsier thought. Out loud, however, he said, “This all sounds very weak, skaa. You have nothing more than idle speculations?”

“Not about House Renoux, my lord,” Hoid said. “I tried, but your worry over this house is meaningless! You should pick a house more central to politics. Like, say, House Elariel . . .”

Kelsier frowned. By mentioning Elariel, Hoid was implying that he had some important tidbit that would be worth Kelsier’s payment. It seemed that House Renoux’s secrets were safe. It was time to move the discussion along to other houses, so that Hoid wouldn’t get suspicious of Kelsier’s interest in Renoux. “Very well,” Kelsier said. “But if this isn’t worth my time...”

“It is, my lord. Lady Shan Elariel is a Soother.”

       “Proof?”

“I felt her touch on my emotions, my lord,” Hoid said. “During a fire at Keep Elariel a week ago, she was there calming the emotions of the servants.”

Kelsier had started that fire. Unfortunately, it hadn’t spread beyond the guardhouses. “What else?”

“House Elariel has recently given her leave to use her powers more at court functions,” Hoid said. “They fear a house war, and wish her to make whatever allegiances possible. She always carries a thin envelope of shaved brass in her right glove. Get a Seeker close to her at a ball, and you shall see. My lord, I do not lie! My life as an informant depends solely upon my reputation. Shan Elariel is a Soother.” Kelsier paused, as if musing. The information was useless to him, but his true purpose—finding out about House Renoux—had already been fulfilled. Hoid had earned his coins, whether he realized it or not.

Kelsier smiled. Now to sow a little more chaos.  “What of Shan’s covert relationship with Salmen Tekiel?” Kelsier said, picking the name of a likely young nobleman. “Do you think that she used her powers to gain his favor?”

“Oh, most certainly, my lord,” Hoid said quickly. Kelsier could see the glimmer of excitement in his eyes; he assumed that Kelsier had given him a luscious bit of political gossip free of charge.

“Perhaps she was the one who secured Elariel the deal with House Hasting last week,” Kelsier said musingly. There had been no such deal.

       “Most likely, my lord.”

No pulses came from behind. Soon, she moved on, pulling out Cett's instructions, searching out a second informant. She trusted Slowswift's words well enough, but she would like confirmation. She picked an informant on the other side of the spectrum—a beggar named Hoid whom Cett claimed could be found in a particular square late at night.

A few quick jumps brought her to the location. She landed atop a roof and looked down, scanning the area. The ash had been allowed to drift here, piling in corners, making a general mess of things. A group of lumps huddled in an alley beside the square. Beggars, without home or job. Vin had lived like that at times, sleeping in alleys, coughing up ash, hoping it wouldn't rain. She soon located a figure that wasn't sleeping like the others, but sitting quietly in the light ashfall. Her ears picked out a faint sound. The man was humming to himself, as the instructions said that he might be doing.

   Vin hesitated.

She couldn't decide what it was, but something bothered her about the situation. It wasn't right. She didn't stop to think, she simply turned and jumped away. That was one of the big differences between her and Elend—she didn't always need a reason. A feeling was enough. He always wanted to tease things out and find a why, and she loved him for his logic. However, he would have been very frustrated about her decision to turn away from the square as she had.

What's this? / Fall of Pangeo :: Jobs
« on: December 12, 2009, 11:44:00 PM »

Characters focus on at most two jobs without having a penalty.  If more than two job sets are being used the character does not have time to focus enough on their skills and are less skilled than others in those fields.  Those who choose to only focus on one profession tend to have a higher than average knowledge within that area.  Different job fields can be combined as the character sees fit to create new things not seen before.

Land Vehicle Technician :: Land techs make a living using whatever they can find to create vehicles that move well across the land.  The more the have available the better and faster the vehicle can become.

Water Vehicle Technician :: Swimmers can create water vehicles ranging from above water vessels such as boats to more advanced, underwater means of transportation.

Air Vehicle Technician :: Air techs create a large array of mechanisms.  Some focus on small individual flight methods such as jet packs and single man air fliers.  Others like to create massive vessels that can hold a small settlement worth of people.

Surgeons :: Surgeons are good at extremely complex medical procedures in controlled situations.  In the heat of battle they are near useless, however, the battle ends and they are invaluable.

Computer Hacker :: Characters that are good at infiltrating modern and archaic computer systems.

Computer Engineer :: People who can create new computer systems.  These new systems can be used to augment nearly every type of technology from Computer Hacking to Vehicle creation

More later if we decide we want/need them.

What's this? / Fall of Pangeo :: Class Types
« on: December 12, 2009, 11:22:43 PM »

Warrior :: These characters focus on physical combat.  They tend to wear thicker and heavier armor and clothing than others.  Warriors usually use swords or bludgeoning weapons, but few have been known to pick up a gun.

Smuggler :: These characters tend to do what will make them the most money.  They try to avoid physical fighting, standing at a distance using bows, crossbows, or guns.  Smugglers generally have large amounts of money and access to a large amount of contraband.

Medic ::  Characters who choose to be medics are not good at any form of fighting.  They tend to be good at avoiding the battle while tending to their friends and team mates.  Medics do have basic skills with a weapon of choice, but aren't nearly as good as those who focus on such things.

Bounty Hunter :: Bounty Hunters only concern is money.  They do whatever will give them most money and have a wide range of weapon skills.  Most Bounty Hunters move from group to group, not gaining more than materialistic bonds with those around them.

Assassin :: These characters are generally extremely loyal to one group.  They are highly skilled at being unseen.  If they catch an opponent off guard the battle is most certainly already won, but get them out in the open and they will struggle to win.

Monk :: Monks focus solely on the use of Gaian energy as a weapon.  They nearly never use any kind of conventional weapon.  These characters are either good at healing and supporting their allies, or physical battle, almost never both.

ALL character classes can use some level of Gaian energy.  It's abilities affect only skills relating to their class skills.

What's this? / Fall of Pangeo :: Storyline
« on: December 12, 2009, 11:09:58 PM »

Prior to mankind's second fall the continents of earth had formed into a super continent that resembled that of its ancient ancestor.  This new land mass was named Pangeo.  Humanity continued to grow, but having grown so close in proximity to each other their infighting had grown worse than ever.

In an effort to remain in control the United Nations of Pangeo began developing new technologies which would divide the land mass, allowing them to raise their country into the air and move it at will.  A large portion of the rest of the world's population felt this defied the laws of nature and waged war against those who supported UNP.

This war went on for nearly a millennium before all the equipment was in place for the UNPs recession.  Mid November 7,500 AD their plan was engaged.  Rockets shot from satellites in space cut off a full third out of the center of the continent.  This mass lifted from the surface of the earth raising miles into the air and it began a journey to the other side of the planet.

Upon arrival at its new destination the landing sequences were engaged.  Before they made it half way to landing the mechanisms failed do to terrorist intervention.  Large pieces of land were blown off and landed in the sea, while the rest of the city continued to hover in place, a mile above the ocean surface.

In retaliation for the terrorist attacks the the UNP launched a massive missile strike at what was left of Pangeo.  The amount of weapons raining from space would have been enough to destroy the entire continent if it hadn't been for intervention of Gaia.  The earth itself lashed out, massive amounts of energy shot from the UNP's old residence and destroyed the incoming missiles.

This attack left many scars upon the planet.  Four large spires of earth grew from the newly divided mini continents formed from the outer Pangeo as they broke apart from the center crater.  Another identical obelisk grew from the center of the stationary floating continent that was once the UNP.

Inside each of these monuments was a network of caves that lead deep into a small inner sanctum.  These sanctums floors and vaulted ceilings were connected by a strand of energy similar to that which had defending the planet years earlier.

The crater, now its own continent, grew dark and lifeless, aside from the dark beasts that spawn within its depths.  Slowly these creatures spread throughout what was left of the world, destroying nearly all life.

The year is now 22,000 AA (After Apocalypse).

Most of humanity has collapsed.  There are two primary factions left.  Those who seek to destroy the Spires of Gaia, and those who seek to preserve them.  The first group argues that by destroying the outward forces of the planet Cerberus' crater will fall into a deep slumber, leaving the world to grow again.  The second believe Cerberus' crater and the Spires are a warning, sent forth by Gaia and that if the spires were to be destroyed the planet would lash out in unimaginable ways, destroying them all.

Weapons such as guns have become rare dew to the lack of ammunition manufacturing.  People have begun to revert to older forms of weaponry such as bows, crossbows, and wielded weapons.  Technological skills have become important in this new world, whether they be the ability to create and use vehicles, weapons, or access and use archaic computer systems.

Energy released from the planet has seeped into the every day life of those still alive.  Many people don't realize it's presence, but when they focus strongly they can use their body as a catalyst for the power.

These factions fight for their beliefs at all costs, both set on the salvation of the planet their ancestors destroyed.

Jeb pulled the worn wooden handle from the pocket on his old coat.  He was surrounded, in front of him stood three Samurai, behind him two more Samurai and an Itako, to his sides, fifty foot brick walls.  The corner of his mouth raised slightly and he let out a small laugh, “So, you think you've got me do you?  Let's play.”  He squeezed the object in his hand.  It came to life, cloth grew from underneath his hand and wrapped around itself.  From the back a wooden pommel formed, on the front a wooden hand guard grew.  A blade thrust out of the hand guard, slightly curved, stopping at four feet in length.

Jeb bent his knees, then pressed down hard.  His body was shot backward, his sword buried itself in the Itako's chest.  Best to get her out of the way first.  I'm lucky Itako are blind and no one else was paying attention.  Before he could fully release his sword from her body, the other five Samurai were on him.  He ducked the first stroke of an enemy blade and pulled his sword free.  Jumping over the next he struck downward cutting nearly a foot into the shoulder of one of the Samurai who had accompanied the Itako.

“Gyaaaah!” He had been hit, his left arm was bleeding profusely.  He couldn't guard against all of them at once.  He swung at one of the closer Samurai, aiming for his side, but he was struck from behind on the back of his leg.  He stumbled and missed.  “Heh heh.  Looks like you really did get me this time.  Huh?”  Something had hit the ground next to him.  A man in a floor length brown cloak – the Samurai surrounding them fell to the ground.

Jeb bowed his head, “Master, I thought you were . . . I mean, thank you.  I owe you my life.”  The man looked down at him scornfully and reached his hand down to help him back to his feet.  Jeb reached up and the man smiled.

“You'll never learn to not take on more than you're ready for will you?”  The two of them laughed together as the cloaked figure helped Jeb walk down the alley.  “I've got much to tell you of my recent endeavors.  Because of their importance, I couldn't let anyone know I was still . . . “  He stopped.  Jeb's sudden, dead weight was too much for him to hold.  The old man let Jeb's body slide slowly to the ground.  He looked down at his student, an arrow standing in his chest.

Looking back down the alley he could see the Itako.  Standing on  her knees, bow in hand.  A trail of blood began to form in the corner of her mouth and she fell face down on the asphalt.  The man looked back down to Jeb, tears forming in his eyes.  “No, no, you can't die on me.  You're the only friend I've ever known. “

Jeb smiled, looking up at the cloaked figure his long blonde hair covering his face haphazardly, “Come on old man, we knew this day would come.  They've been scared of me since the day I got my Tsuka.  There's no way they would have let me live long enough to complete my Daisho.  Here,” he held up the wooden handle, “you know where to take it.  He was destined to have it, even more so than me.”

“Don't say that Jeb.  You'll live.  We have an Itako not ten miles from here.  I can get you to her and everything will be fine,”  He frantically began to try and lift Jeb over his shoulders.  The muscles in his neck and back strained, blood dripping down his cloak as he struggled.

“Don't waste your energy old man.  Let me die in peace will you?  I died honorably.  If I had survived this encounter, they only would have sent more next time, and who's to say you'd be there again?  No, it's best this way,” He coughed, specks of blood splattered across the old man's face.

The elder Samurai bowed his head taking the handle from him.  “You will not be forgotten my friend.”

Brandon Sanderson / Why Jedi are just Mistborn in disguise
« on: December 09, 2009, 01:31:18 AM »

A while back I stumbled across something in my scholarly studies.  Jedi lightsabers use a "diatium" battery.  This got me thinking.  This is the result:

Definitions
[/b]

Metal - Any of a category of electropositive elements that usually have a shiny surface, are generally good conductors of heat and electricity, and can be melted or fused, hammered into thin sheets, or drawn into wires. Typical metals form salts with nonmetals, basic oxides with oxygen, and alloys with one another.

Alkali Metal - any of the group of univalent metals including potassium, sodium, lithium, rubidium, cesium, and francium, whose hydroxides are alkalis.

Hydrogen - Hydrogen is a considered a nonmetal at normal temperature and pressure. Though at very high pressure millions of times that of earth it is theorized that is will form into a metal. Also it is placed on the periodic table as an alkali metal.

Jedi - Any member in the knightly order in Star Wars that are trained to defend justice and peace in the universe

Jedi Consular - A Jedi who focuses on the use of the force.  They often specialize in a small section of the force.

Jedi Knight - Those Jedi who fight for peace in their own way.

Jedi Weapons Master - A Jedi who focuses strongly on the use of weapons.

Jedi Master - A Jedi who is well versed in all forms of the force and has spent years honing their abilities.

Force - An energy that moves through everything in the universe and can be manipulated by those sensitive to its presence.

Force Precognition - Those who use the force to guide their movements in battle

Force Lightning  - A force ability which creates lightning

Force Push - The ability to use the force to push others away

Force Persuade - The ability to use the force to influence others decisions.

Battle Meditation - The use of the force to increase the morale of your team while decreasing the morale of opponents

Destroy Droid - A force ability that destroys droids

Misting - A person who can ingest metals and use them to cause effects.  Usually can only use one metal

Mistborn - A Misting who can burn any of the Allomantic Metals

Allomancy - The ability to ingest and burn metals to create a desired effect

Pewter Arm - One who can burn Pewter to make themselves stronger and faster

Rioter/Soother - Mistings who can affect the emotions of others

Coinshot/Lurcher - Misting that can push and pull metal from them

Seer - A Misting who can use Atium to see a short distance into the future.

Direct Comparisons
[/b]

Jedi Weapons Master - Obviously a Pewter Arm in disguise.

Jedi Consular - Obviously other Mistings in disguise

Jedi Master - Nothing more than your average every day Mistborn

Jedi Knight - Mistings that actively fight for a cause

Indirect relations
[/b]

Rioting and Soothing by other names
[/color]
  • Battle Meditation
  • Force Persuade

Atium's use as a force power

  • Force Precognition

How Coinshot and Lurcher powers are used

  • Force Push
  • Destroy Droid

Where it gets complicated
[/b]
Hydrogen can be used as a push/pull metal
Hydrogen is currently classified as an alkali metal on the periodic table of elements.  Though it is theorized that at extremely high pressures it would crystallize the same way that other metals do.  If a Misting could learn to focus strongly enough on these metals they could push and pull Hydrogen.

How this could be used for Force Lightning
If the Misting pushed all of the positively charged Hydrogen molecules one direction it would in turn cause lightning to occur.

Abilities such as force choke and others
These would require one to be a Mistborn, where it would require the ability to push and pull hydrogen molecules around the enemies neck at the same time to create a large amount of pressure.

How a lightsaber works.
I'm assuming that Atium is an extremely good material to make batteries out of, because the only thing that makes lightsabers hard to make is getting enough power small enough.

So a long time ago my friend Jared dropped his thing of ranch dressing and it splattered everywhere, some of it got on my hand and I reached over my friend Tewk's (the one with dark hair) face.  It ended with a joke that is still mentioned from time to time about how I got white stuff on his face.  So the other day him and Nate were at a party.  It ended like this :

Needless to say, he will never live it down. ha ha.
