Books / Re: Published WotF material...

Yeah, I did kind of reverse the  order.  :)  I tend to do that quite often.  Sometimes I think I have some rare form of dyslexia that translates over to other brain functions besides reading.  I  really wasn't that worried about my stories fitting in though, seeing as how they are supposed to be fantasy/sci-fi.  I agree that tailoring a story for particular contests is pretty ridiculous.  I try to avoid that as much as possible.

I really don't want to make it look like I'm bashing on the newbies.  I'm not really.  Not being published myself, I really wouldn't have any clout in that arena anyhow.  I guess that I just expected more from what I've heard.  If there is a particular year that you could point me to, I'd greatly appreciate it.  I'm starting work on another story, which will be for my third submission to the contest.  I know that I'm not going to like everything that they publish, I'm just looking for something that I like (I guess) so that I can have some sort of hope that they'll like my work (which I obviously like  :)  ).

Books / Published WotF material...

So, now that I've submitted two short stories to L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future for their quarterly contests, I decided to pick up a copy of their annual publication and see what kind of things get picked by the judges there.  I got a copy of Volume 19 from the library (2003 publication), and have to admit that I was sorely disappointed.  On the whole, I thought that the writing was quite good, but that the stories themselves just lacked a whole lot.  At this point I'm mostly just confused.  I was curious if anyone else had read this volume, and if so what they had thought of it.  I'm still going to plan on picking up copies of the more recent volumes to read, and am hoping that maybe that 2003 was just a funny year.  Then again, maybe I'm just a dufus and don't have the capactiy to grasp "real" short story writing as it is in this collection.  Anyone have an opinion?

Nessa brought on the topic of apples.

My new favorite confection? Caramel apples with pecans and chocolate from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.

This is the only place near to Utah County that I've actually seen them.  Usually you can only find them in specialty candy stores.  My last one came from South Carolina whilst on a trip for school.    The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is out at the Riverwoods, near the Wynnsong theater.  Plan on spending a bundle for one (last one I bought cost me about six bucks -- yeah, for one)... but wow.

Does jealous really come in purple?

Oh, and those apples are to die for.  I'll keep my comments about those to myself though.  :)

Crunchy by far.  The puffy ones quickly deteriorate to a sticky mass of gelatinous goo in my mouth that loves to bind to every surface of my mouth (but mostly to the ridged roof of it) and between the cracks of my teeth, which results in me having to spend copious amounts of time scrubbing it off with my tongue afterwards.  My poor tongue frequently comes out on the other side of said copious amounts of time feeling very sore and unappreciated.  Additionally, this residual mass that must be forced from between my teeth and out of the dark nether corners of my mouth is never as tasty once removed, as the cheese flavor has already flown the coop during the first two seconds of salivatory breakdown, and has been replaced by the bitter and all too familiar taste of tooth plaque.  So, when given a choice, I will always sway towards the bag of crunchies.  If, however, there is not... I have been known on occasion to overlook the aforementioned attrocities of puffy Cheetos for the chance to ingest some of their entirely too addictive cheesiness.

I have a difficult time believing that anyone could read/hear the things that he says about the Fantasy genre and/or its fans, and think that the guy is decent in the least bit.  It's really quite amazing that he has any readership at all at this point.  I bought the first few of his books, but after reading the essay that is linked below stopped buying them.  I tend to have the same opinion of supporting this guy as EUOL does.  If he has such a strong opinion of himself, let him try to support himself with no financial resompense.  I have, however, (for some reason still not entirely clear to me) continued to read his books as they have come out (borrowed from the Library every time), and I've become increasingly annoyed by them.  Wizard's First Rule was quite the good book.  And I loved the way that his second book picked up immediately from where WFR left off.  After the second book, however, the rest have followed a very predictable formula:  Richard's (main character) girlfriend is in trouble, Richard digs himself into a hole so massive that there is no imaginable way out, Richard's magic takes over his body/mind and saves the day.  Not to mention the decline in Goodkind's writing prowess that was visible in WRF, but deteriorated quickly thereafter.  For anyone even thinking about picking up one of his books, I'd suggest getting a copy of WFR from your local library and forgetting the rest.  You'll thank yourself.  Let this guy fade into a deep, quick obscurity.  He deserves it.

So, my most recent short story submission to WotF is off and I'm starting on a sketch for my next submission (Mar 31st).  I have hopes to submit a new story for every quarter this year.  We'll see what happens.  :)

So, I decided to finally pick up Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz.  Fairly interesting so far.  I also just saw this new book called "The Tower of Shadows" by another young author (Drew Bowling).  Apparently started writing in High School, and is now a Sophomore in college.  Anyone read this yet?  I thought I might, but didn't care too much for Eragon.  Mr. X (Peter Straub) and Dreamcatcher (King) are next on the list.  Oh the joys of bookdom.

So has anyone else seen the new internet trailer for this movie yet?  It's amazing.  Really.  Didn't know that Stephen Spielberg was on board.  I can't wait to see this one.

I'll be submitting my second short story to WOF by... tomorrow.  Eeek.  Need to get busy on the editing.  My first didn't get anything, but that wasn't much of a surprise.  Glad to know I have some fellow TWG'ers for competition.  Good luck all.

I just finished A Shadow in Summer, by Daniel Abraham.  It was incredibly good.  Very well written, and an intriguing storyline.  Not all that intense or exciting, but a great story nonetheless.  I'd recommend it to just about anyone.  Now I'm trying to read Lord of Snow and Shadows by Sara Ash.  About 70 pages into that, and having some difficulties with it.  Her writing is flatly mediocre and the storyline is so cliched fantasy that it's killing me.  Will probably give up on it sometime today or tomorrow and try to get a new one.  Chainreading is down for some reason, and so I don't have access to my list of books that I wanted to read.  I might just end up defaulting to another Stephen King if it doesn't come back up soon.  He's usually good for an exciting read.

Been listening to Daniel Powter and Maroon 5 alot lately.  Every once in a while Metallica and Will Smith get thrown in for some variety.

I tend to agree with Sigyn.  I really didn't care much for this series of books.  Granted, they were well written, but nothing much seemed to happen.  I thought these books were just a big flop, but then I heard that they were making a movie out ot it and was really suprised.  Don't know why anyone would want to do that, but then again there is always the chance that the movie will be much better than the book.  Say, in the instance of Eragon.  Don't think it'd take much in either case.

Hey.  Just finished Lisey's Story by Stephen King.  Decent, not amazing.  About halfway through Mistborn right now.  Hoping a little more action shows up sometime soon in that one.  I read Good Omens a while ago.  I REALLY liked the first 1/4th or so of the book, and the last 1/4th or so.  The middle seemed pretty long and boring to me.  When it was funny though, it was FUNNY.  Definitely worth reading.  I really like Gaiman's work.  J.V. Jones's:  A Cavern of Black Ice, is quite good.  Even if her 3rd book has taken nearly a millenia to come out.  Sometime soon...

So, has anyone out there ever listened to this guy.  Freaking amazing.  Really cool stuff.  Reminds me of Frank Sinatra a bit.  Heard it on the store radio over in the Barnes & Noble in Orem last week.  Gotta get a CD.
