Brandon Sanderson / Re: 2011
« on: February 28, 2010, 06:13:57 AM »
There are three confirmed shards and their names.  He told the fans that stuck around at one of the signings about the shard that will be in WoK.  And since I'm not sure if it is okay or not to share, I won't say what the shard is, or what attribute is attached to it, but I feel safe in saying that Brandon said it is the most dangerous shard we will meet.  (Or at the very least have met so far.  We are of two minds about which it is.)

Yes, those are shards.  The point behind them... well, go check out the shard thread.  It's too hard to summarize.

Silence Divine is a book he has outlined (I think it's at that point).  It's a shard world, and from what I understand of the plot, the magic system is... well, it's based around sickness.  The way it was explained to me once was you get a cold, but at the same time you would be able to breath fire.  Or else you get an ear infection and you'll also be able to fly.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: question about Brandon and editing

I can answer the last one!

He has hired four people to do artwork in the book because one of the characters is (as he's put it) a darwin type character (except a woman).  She sketches the creatures she sees, and those sketches will be included in the book.  I know that Issac (artist for the MB series) is doing these cool arches at the beginning of each chapter that indicates who is in it, and a hint of what will happen.  There's also something like seven different maps.

The thing he has to do is he must speak with the artist and say "this is what I want".  The artist then comes back with a piece and he then must reply with changes to be made.  I'm sure Ink could tell you more about it, since he does something similar for a living.

I doubt it.  Chris would let me in on such secrets.  I like the thinking that it's Peter.

Books / Re: LDS Sci-fi and Fantasy Authors

I don't know about Sigyn, but for me I love knowing the famous LDS people because it, well, for a lack of better term, gives me a sense of pride.  I like being able to read it and go "oh, cool."  Also, from what I've seen (keep in mind this isn't a for sure thing, just a gernalization) their books tend to be a lot cleaner then the rest.  (which isn't to say non-LDS authors don't keep their books clean.)

It's kind of like Brandon said at LTUE.  He was able to flip open one of Tracy Hickman's books and go up to his non-LDS friends and say "Look, see!  He goes to the same strange church as I do".

Josh took it one step further, but I can't remember what exactly he said.

Okay, to answer the questions, Yes, hoid was [REDACTED] and it was the epilogue.

Hoid's point in this book is [REDACTED].  Hoid will have a couple of scenes in the main part of the book, and then the scene that was read at the end.

Also, make sure you pay BIG ATTENTION to one of the interludes.  I've been told about it, and trust me, you all will want to make sure you pay attention.

Everything Else / Re: LTUE

I'm not sure honestly.  If we do it thursday it would have to be after class, and writing group gets over at around 7:30-ish.

I just wanted to jump on and agree with what BSG has said about writing excuses.  A lot of the stuff that is covered in class is covered in writing excuses.  But there's also a ton that isn't covered in class that has been tackled in WE.

For class this year he waved the assign reading because he never actually reads them.  Last year (and I assume the years before) he would have the class suggest, and then vote on, books.  We chose three last year, and were assigned to read them.  (As I recall it was Elantris, Sabriel, and something wars.  It was a space opera.)

I don't know about some of that, but as for who does the reviews, it depends.  My uncle used to have a review website and he got quite a few books for review.  Steve I'm sure also gets a ton of ARCs for his reading pleasure (or displeasure).  I used to be part of a program for Harper Collins where I got a chance to review middle grade books for them.

I couldn't resist reusing this image... had fun keeping my hands busy during class.
