Rants and Stuff / Re: Religion (Potentially sensitive)
« on: November 21, 2008, 03:19:34 PM »
I'm locking the thread. My post pointing out that this was not about proving or disproving a religion was completely ignored. THat is *NOT* what we do here.

Drakogy, do it again, and you're banned.
Kalam, this is warning number one. Read the thread, *especially* posts by moderators, before you post.

I'm going to call an end to this particular branch of the conversation, which is growing out of control and causing bad feelings. Neither side is providing citations for anything outside the scriptures -- and in every single one of those cases their argument relies on a particular interpretation of that scripture. Thus that gets us no where. So, we are *not* discussing whether Mormonism is *true* at this point. We can talk about what the Doctrines of the LDS church are, we can talk about personal beliefs, we can talk about doctrines of other sects. But we are *not* trying to discredit specific religions here.

I hope I'm clear here and don't need to start making threats and taking administrative action.

FAIL!

That's what we're calling this. It's songs about failing to make it big, preferably in the music biz. We have a humble beginning:

They Might Be Giants - "The Mesopotamians"
Reel Big Fish - "Everything Sucks"
Presidents of the United States of America - "We're Not Gonna Make It"
Queen - "Spread Your Wings"
They Might Be Giants - "Hey Mr. DJ (I Thought You Said We Had a Deal)"

as always, I want your suggestions.

Perfect World. For those of you who've heard of it and have irrational "lag" whines, there's now PWI, which is USA hosted. 0 lag.

Perfect World is free, both to install and to play.

The jumping is what first brought me in, but it's really easy to solo until you get a decent guild too.

I play PW even though I couldn't stand City of Heroes or WoW

The Toasters - "Underground Town"
I got my taste for the toasters from a friend in Las Vegas. He was a real ska listener. Loved the Specials and other second-generation, two-tone era ska bands. The Toasters had a song on a mix tape he gave me. They are love.

I'm just incredibly, incredibly angry that this wasn't a PC release.

I have a punk cover of Fraggle Rock that's pretty good. Since the original SMGH had stuff like H.R. Puffnstuff and The Bugaloos (pleeeeeeeeease don't tell me if you're too young to know those, i just don't need to be that aware of my mortality) Fraggle Rock would fit right in.

Another one that comes to mind that should have been done is The Great Space Coaster.

And rather than the Animaniacs theme, I think I'd rather hear them do Yakko's World. True, the music wasn't original, but the application of lyrics was exceedingly awesome, and hearing that done with guitars, and maybe the screaming voice of Ozzy Osborne would be mind blowing.

oh, doesn't hurt. But I guess what I'm saying is that the point of my collection was to combine nostalgia with some good ol' rock.

King of the Hill theme is already written/performed by The Refreshments, which are what I kind of call "sub-punk." stuff that would be considered punk in the 1970s because  it's like the Ramones or the Clash, but it's nothing like modern punk.

In short, it really doesn't need to be covered. It's already rock. And if you aren't familiar with The Refreshments, you really should be. "Down Together," "Blue Collar Hero," "Preacher's Daughter," "Birds Sing," and "Wanted" are great starts.

I totally agree with you, Ookla.  Even more important is that at least McCain has a voting record.  How can you trust a person who was so afraid of hurting his political career that he refused to even submit a vote on over 130 different pieces of legislation, and made no effort to introduce any himself?  And we won't even talk about Biden.  He is one of the main reasons Congress has a 17% approval rating.  In a way, I find it hilarious when these senators and congressmen try to blast Bush for his failings when he is almost twice as popular as they are.  Here's an idea; you really want change?  Then the next time one of your state reps or senators is up for re-election, vote him out!  I mean all of them!  Since the elections are staggered, there will be enough of them left to prevent the chaos of a completely green house and senate, but you will most definitely get the attention of whoever remains.

I do agree that the reversal on things like Guantanamo is troubling. But I think voting with your party 90% of the time is better than 98% of the time. If you don't agree on the core principles, why's it your party? Also, a large percentage of all votes is for normal, non-controversial stuff. 10% rebellion on things one feels one should stand up for seems better than only 2% bucking of the party line.

I'm sorry, i have to remain in the camp that thinks that surrendering your *own* *core* principles (not party principles) about essential human rights is much worse than having a short voting record. It says to me that even what he thinks is right isn't worth standing for.
