Everything Else / Re: France Makeing sence.....What?!?!
« on: February 12, 2003, 06:34:38 PM »
I've been thinking about this again. Some of my thoughts may seem scattered, but I think they're all related.

There were a few accusations in Powell's remarks that he backed up with evidence. Most were not, but still remained simply accusations without any proof. A few of these latter have been seriously contended for several reasons. Some for their complete lack of evidence. Others because there is good evidence that contradicts directly what Powell says. I'm not convinced that Iraq has the capability to destroy as much as the current U.S. executive administration claims.

Bush needs to lay out ALL the evidence. He needs to share it with the executives and intelligence divisions of the entire world. He needs to stop fronting and stop trash talking. He should put a leash on Rumsfeld and Powell as well. His rhetoric and threats obviously fail to affect Hussein, Chirac, or anyone else. They don't seem to affect the population of Europe, which, while many of their governments back Bush, seem by all accounts to be against this war. A more diplomatic approach may be more likely to sway Europe, the leaders still opposed, and who know, possibly even Hussein (though I doubt it). If Bush MUST maintain a policy of violence to stop devestation, at least he could try to show the necessity of doing it rather than simply say he will no matter what.

Incidentally, Bush *IS* adversely affecting the US economy, which even Alan Greenspan tells us (though not in those direct words). War bluster and terrorism alerts seem nearly calculated to cause fear in the population (who needs al Qaeda when you can get scared by the Department of Homeland Defense -- interesting digression, Robin Williams joked that a lot of old Germans thought creating that department was very shrewed). Anyway, Greenspan points out that these activities very much hurt the performance of the stock market, investor mood, employment, purchases, etc. The diplomatic approach I mentioned earlier may allow some stabilization, or at least cause LESS damage.

Now, as for France. While I agree with them that it's not appropriate to go to war, I have a couple of reasons why I think they're not on the up and up. These are the guys that did nuclear testing in the 90's. Yes, just last decade. The entire world asked them not to do those tests. Yet, in typical French style, they waved their private parts at us and did it anyway. They aren't exactly alarmed by WMD activity that the world doesn't approve of.

{Time for more speculation and foundless rumors. Please note how I've started this section and when you disagree with me, realize that I'm basically saying this section is, in fact, a joke}. I wouldn't be surprised if France was engaged in bio/chem weapons production itself, and would feel guilty about attacking Iraq for the same.{/Baseless Slander}

In other words, while I agree that we shouldn't be going to war yet, I think that France is less than pristine about the issue. So again, I'm still not confident about the evidence they present either. Because of this, I'm not hardline pacifist. Either side could be right, but because neither is what I can call forthright, I'm still on the fence, thinking that, all things being equal, no war is better than war in most cases.

Now, on the other other hand, we have North Korea. Who has SAID they're working on nuclear weapons (though now they say they haven't said that), who breaks non proliferation treaties by skipping over the annullment procedure they agreed to. Who is building facilities in the public eye capable of producing weapons grade plutonium. Who basically say that if you don't sell them something they'll blow everyone up (give it a break, and embargo is NOT a declaration of war, it would NOT free your nation of guilt for the millions of deaths you'd cause). Now, if Iraq is so bad, why isn't North Korea. My first response is to say because they're not Muslim. But then again, I think there might be reasons for it. N Korea has acted this way before. It's their version of throwing a tantrum so they get their way.  So I'm not sure I agree that even if war in Iraq is justified, military action against N Korea is as well.  Yet, Bush is again shaping up for the same approach. Screw diplomacy, do as I say or we'll kick your butt. only, in this case, it's really, do as I say or we won't even talk to you and let you force us to kick your butt.

{sigh} I'm beginning to think of the end of the world in much closer terms.

Well, NWN may never replace pnp, but I think it shows that it is at least possible to create electronic tools for that. Eventually, I think it may be possible to create an open ended story/world using the electronic tools. However, to fully emulate the possibilities of PNP gaming that will take many years. At least to do it in a practical way for beginning or intermediate user.  Right now, I agree, PNP provides too many options, both in game and meta-game for VGRPG to compete with it on the same grounds. Which is why I think they haven't tried before.

just include a nice, big fight scene once a session. I like interaction, but I'll also admit it's fun to kick some butt every now and then.

is this the same guy who wants you to USE STRICT; when it comes to the rules?

Again, I think you shouldn't cater to ONE person. If they all want hns style gaming, more power to them, that's what they'll have fun with. However, if most want a complex story that they have influence on, you should be playing that.

I don't know if I agree PnP consciously reduces min/maxing, but it certainly makes it easier to avoid stats if you wnat to.

On the other hand, I don't believe there IS such a thing as CRPG. NWN comes close, but it's the DM running it that does it. The single player story isn't any different than other games.

Note, I'm not saying that what are commonly referred to as RPG video games are crap (though Final Fantasy 7 was). Just that they are not "Role Playing." You're too locked into one story. You can't break out. You have a limited set of choices, etc. There's no room for personal goals or for player influence on the story beyond a few pre-determined sets. It's all about the story goal.

Role-Playing Games / Re: d20 Modern

I think you siad it yourself. YOu only have two options. Two sets of progression. That's it. d20 Modern has some LAME class titles, but there are 6 different sets of progressions and options for class abilities -- some of them are hard to explain, but none of them are "supernatural." You can bounce from one class to another. PLUS you get skills and feats and professions. CoC doesn't offer that. (of course, the solution is just to make a d20 character and then give it sanity points a la CoC if that's what you want to play.

As for computer programmers getting the "virgin" feat, that's why I studied literature.

Wait. Something about that didn't come out right....

Yeah, I just looked it up again. The System Resource Document just has the same info as the PHB, MM, and DMG. Also the Psioncs HB, but that and the MM have not been "cleared" yet.

actually, unless there are SUBSTANTIAL changes from when it was on the Open Gaming Foundation website, it's essentially the same text as the three core D&D books. Anyone know?

Ok, I'm bored, and I did this.

7 of the first 10 google hits (including the first 6) for Eric J. Ehlers refer to ME, most of them on my own domains.

Removing the middle initial, I only command 4 of the first 10. The first is some Frenchy guy talking about mass transit. The next two are for a Swedish guy who's page I had to have google translate to figure out (he's a computer geek, apparently). The fourth place goes to some Track runner. And I come in fifth. Not bad since I haven't ever actually finished a full site and publicized it.

Ok, we've been talking about flinking around with d20 systems, and I've been thinking about something.

Primarily this thought came from the inherant problems with Horror gaming. You can't really terrorize people when playing D&D or CoC when the dead walk because they already know they're to expect that.

Example:
(wrong:)
"Ok, we're playing Call of Cthulu. You feel a sense of dread, suddenly, a sickening mockery of the human form appears in the mist, accompanied by a shrill chant. Out of the horrid thing's mouth a tentacle gropes toward you."
"AIEEE! I run in fear! I never expected a tentacle monstrosity in Call of Cthulu!"

(right:)
<DM says the same thing:>
"OK, well, I guess we'd better make our fear checks. Look, I passed, I get to keep my sanity. I pull out my shotgun. Hopefully a couple blasts will knock it down and we'll be able to get away." (said while rifling through the popcorn bag to get the half popped kernals)

So, I had a big issue. How could I run a game where Nyarlathotep shows up and scares and surprised the bejezes out of my players? You can't have them make characters from the PHB. Nor from CoC. These will give away the theme, which I want to be a surprise. One answer that lacks flair is to have them make d20 Modern characters then throw in some Great Old Ones, keeping track of their sanity myself, and hope that works. I don't think that works so great, because that game is very cinematic, and they'll expect to beat it (they'll be wrong, of course, but it still doesn't generate fear).

Another alternative is to make standard characters from a system like GURPS. You never know what's going to happen in GURPS, and you could even make cyberpunk characters and spring the horror on them. But the system is a bit slow and I don't know many people who are already familiar.

So what other choice do I have? One solution I'm tossing around is very modular. I'd have something like two tracks, with no multi-classing. You either get an offensive track, like CoC, and get a +1 combat bonus at each level or a defensive track, which has advancement more like a Wizard in D&D. Saves would also progress differently. THe Defensive track gets +2 points to saves to distribute to any saving throw bonus. He could, for example, have +1 to Fort and +1 to reflex; or he could just have +2 for will. At odd numbered levels he'd get 2 more points. At even levels he'd only get one. The Offensive track would only start with 1 point to saves each level, but every THIRD level gets 2.

(An alternative version says you get 2 points each level, add it anywhere, to attack bonus, to Will, FOrt, or to Reflex, you choice, there are no tracks).

Now, I think that's workable, some people will be highly balanced and at every other level they'd even out. Other people would focus on one or two areas and be weak in all others. Skills would be a standard 4 points per level (plus Int bonus) and one feat every third level. Characters also get their bonus attribute point every fourth.

Now, I think that works straight out for a modern campaign, where people don't magically know how to block arrows or cast spells. Spells, if they need to be incorporated, can be added a la CoC, you have to find books and lose some sanity to get/cast them. Ta da!

But what if I want to do a horror-fantasy? In fantasy, I'd like to get characters with magic. Possibly give them some other abilities. I'd like some feedback on that.

I have some initial thoughts, of course, one is to eliminate classes to give a generic feel to the fantasy and have several "special ability progression" tables, which you could choose like class levels in D&D. This might be much more trouble than it's worth, depending on how successful it was in removing the D&D "feel" from the game. Because that's the real issue. How can I make a high fantasy game where seeing the dead rise scares the heck out of the players? Especially when the PHB has a description of abilities that deal with the living dead.

The closest I've seen anyone do this was EUOL. He started us out as 0 level peasants. But that wasn't scary so much as frustrating. What was scary was when, before our first level still, a LICH confronted us. A frickin LICH! Now, it was a gimmick to force one player into choosing a clerical path. The game itself wasn't horror. What was scary was that I already KNEW what a lich could do, and I knew there was NO WAY five 0-level characters could do ANYTHING to it. This, while fun, isn't what I have in mind.

So, now that I've talked your ear off, anything to say?

It's not that obtuse. And he's right. I wasn't being serious at all while whining about it. Althought I sure as hell would like to see my brother and my bro-in-law employed once again (as well as a slightly better salary for myself). Anyway, that's beside the point. I'm not fully convinced we should go to war yet, but I get the feeling I'm much more open to it than the French. But then, I suppose they're just worried about getting their butts handed to them. Again.

Oh, and I'm in on that nail driving thing. Not for revenge, but just because it might be entertaining.

I guess I kind of expected the magic system to be the same. I mean, no D20 product has substantially altered it. But I can see why you wouldn't like it if you're not playing D&D.

The best CoC product I've ever seen actually, (on a similar yet unrelated note) is GURPS Cthulupunk, which I think I reviewed for TWG a while back. It's crosses Cyberpunk with CoC, with surprisingly interesting results. The reason I'm reminded of it is that it has a discussion of hte impact of a post-early 20th century CoC game. We've explored Antarctica, there are no Mountains of Madness there. etc. etc. What can you do to make the feel just as effective? Check it out if you can find it. It's out of print, I believe.

Well, now that I've read that, I certainly will be reconsidering my anti-war stance. I was thinking that if there was so much evidence, why didn't Bush produce it before? I am going to assume that their "sources" are being divulged to world leaders, especailly the evidence Powell didn't describe in detail.

I still think Iraq will be scarier when fighting on their own ground than as a general threat. However, I'm softened on the idea of going to war Iraq. I still think Bush is a doofus, but I may change my mind about this policy. Now, if he could just do something about our crappy economy.
