Dan Wells / Re: WorldCon and World Fantasy

Yes, WorldCon has many more fans than World Fantasy. It still has a ton of professionals, it's just that while you're talking to them you run a high chance of seeing a jedi ocelot walk by in the background.

I'm trying to compile a list of local Utah people going to World Fantasy, for purposes of maybe sharing rides and cars and so on. Please add your name and plans below:

World Fantasy: Oct 29 - Nov 1, San Jose, CA

Definitely Coming:
Dan
Nick Dianatkah
Erik Holmes
Rob Code
Steve Diamond
Julie Wright
Josh Perkey
Stacy Whitman
Eric James Stone
Heidi
Isaac
Janci
Marion Jensen

Maybe Coming:
Kaylynn (probably not, she says, but I'm leaving her on the list)
Rob Wells

This will be my car:
Dan
Nick
Rob Code
Rob Wells (if he comes)
Steve (between Sacramento and San Jose only)

This is Eric's car to the best of my knowledge:
Eric James Stone
Heidi
Janci
Isaac

One guy is flying:
Josh Perkey

Which leaves these 3 people in need of transportation:
Erik Holmes
Julie Wright
Stacy Whitman
Marion Jensen

This will be my room:
Dan
Nick
Rob Code
Rob Wells (if he comes)
Steve

Three people are probably staying with relatives:
Eric James Stone
Janci
Isaac Stewart

This leaves us with a male room:
Erik Holmes
Josh Perkey
Marion Jensen

And a female room:
Julie Wright
Stacy Whitman
Heidi

If I've got this wrong, or if you've already made certain arrangements not listed here, let me know.

I hope to have both a reading and a signing, though the schedule hasn't been finalized yet. Either way I will be bringing some copies to sell.

Yes, we will be recording Writing Excuses at WorldCon--they've scheduled us one of their big 90-minute slots, and we're lining up some very cool guests, and it should be a blast. Bring all your friends, and I look forward to meeting you too.

Seriously. Has the thought never occurred to anyone else? (Spoiler.)

I'm the voice of Dinosaur Comics' Devil? I'm...that may be the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me. \o/

That was part of our thinking, actually: we wanted it to be a surprise, but not a shock, which is why the demon was originally mentioned in the first couple of paragraphs--we didn't want people to think it was a normal crime thriller and be blindsided halfway through by a supernatural monster. Then when F. Paul Wilson read it, we talked quite a bit about the surprise factor and he insisted it would be a much stronger book if the demon came out of nowhere (and he's right); he also pointed out that in modern horror, especially coming from Tor, supernatural is pretty much the expected default, so the publisher and the cover image and the little hints dropped throughout the early chapters are all the preparation the audience needs.

Interestingly, for the US version we've cut out all mention of the demon until the demon actually shows up. It's only a couple of lines here and there, really minor in terms of word count, but it gives the book, and the reveal, and entirely different feel. Obviously that means we'll be keeping supernatural stuff out of the cover copy as well. I'm interested to see how it's received.

As for the fan art, well, now you see why my brother can't get a job.

McDonalds has vaunted fries? I'm not sure we live in the same universe.

We did indeed have a blast. It was good to see some new faces, like Erik Holmes and WriterDan, who haven't come to any of these things before.

You didn't like the fries? I'm...astonished.

Dan Wells / Re: German Cover!
« on: May 21, 2009, 09:42:57 PM »
Everyone asks if I "trust" the translation, and the simple answer is that each publisher has invested a lot of their own money into the book (Germany especially), so it's in their own best interest to make the translation as good as they can possibly make it. So yeah, I trust their translator implicitly--making me successful is his job.

I was referring more to the public reception than to the science, but I'm pretty sure we're talking about different things by now. Don't worry about it.

Renoard, you need to watch the new Battlestar Galactica (well, "new" isn't super accurate anymore, now that the series ended). It's existence, quality, and popularity are the best answer to every critique you've leveled at SF throughout this thread.

By the way, I just saw the new Trek and I loved it. It was wildly, almost painfully faithful to all the Star Trek stories that have gone before, and yet at the same time threw all of that out and started over. I was really kind of stunned at how good it was, and how well it did what it needed to do. I can't wait to see what they do next.

After giving up on the early stuff, I came back just long enough to watch the episode with Tricia Helfer. It was better, but still bothersome.
