I would just like to put my spin on the whole manga thing since I work in the bookstore in Utah where most people seem to go for it.

What was said above is true.  Most people are reading for the stories.  If the art is familiar to what they already have read and liked, then they will usually buy the first 2 or three books in a new series (assuming they are out).  Whenever I ask about what draws people to manga, they all say the stories.

That said, I have noticed that almost to a person, the readers are more impressed with the art of the koreans.  In my opinion it is much better, and most readers seem to agree.

As far as book to comic adaptation, there are a few that have done already that, honestly, are just so-so.  Dragonlance and Salvatore have gone that route.  You would need a very different and yet known artist to adapt the art, and then hope that it gets enough marketing "oomph" to get people to know about it.

Anyways, thats my thought for the day...

Books / Re: Eragon
« on: May 02, 2006, 02:26:45 AM »
in a separate thread, i mentioned that the reason why Eragon is so popular is because the kid was 15 when he wrote it.  I manage a book store.  people come in and say, "That was an amazing story!"  I say, "Which part?  the Terry Brooks part, or the LotR part?"

What I often question is do people like the story, or the fact that a 15 year old wrote something that doesn't hang on mommies refrigerator?

I was actually fine with Eragon until 3 things happened:

1.  I read Steven Erikson (read him now!!!!)
2.  I read Brandon Sanderson (you better have read this guy if you are on TWG!!)
3.  I read Eldest (bleh...see below)

Eldest used every cliche in the fantasy/sci-fi universe.  Plus his cover art is crappy.  They look like something out of a My Little Pony cartoon.

very interesting article Brandon!  I found it very informative, and gave me some great insights to the awesome story.

as far as Lord Ruler spoilers...dont feel dissapointed.  You think you understand, but it goes so much more deeper than what mentioned in Book1.  Thats all I will say.

not too shabby!

I happened to be visiting the class the day she brought it in, and at first people didn't know who it was!  good grief!  I knew within seconds.  Very good job!

i agree with stacer - people are more concerned with the "wow" factor.  Here is what a lot of people say to me when they come in, "Wow, that Eragon was a pretty good book - especially when I found out he was 15 when he wrote it."  I have my own opinions about this sort of thing.

As far as Brandon's deal, I'm just glad it's gonna get purchased, and published.  It deserves it.  I think it's what the genre needs right now, and what the readers need.

And don't even get me started on what I think of Goodkind.

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova

the pacing is terrible, and the motivation behind Dracula's evil plan made me laugh incredibly hard...until i realized she was serious - i then threw the book across the room.

I discourage people from buying it at my store.

the Strong Bad one nearly drove me nuts.  sorry Ook.  Peanuts wins, I suppose, since no dancing clip has been brought forth.

way cool stacer!  that seems like an awesome job!

and yes, i did the whole introduction thing as you found.  I know, boring stuff...I still do, however, own the glory for setting up Brandons's biggest signing (I think I still do anyway)!  Anyways, anyone can ask me anything if they feel I can be of help (or just come see me at the store!).

besides the book-clubs, they seem to be unhappy with the people they have dealt with recently.  they feel a bit jerked around.  Libraries and schools do complain a bit about the quality as well.  A lot of people come to us now because we give nearly the same discount on a wider variety of books and dont charge shipping.  However, i agree on the point that they are great for kids themselves.  Parents generally love Scholastic.

I do agree with you on the side of the shear number of books printed.  They are monsters when it comes to that!

You were also right on the voice of the book.  it is definatly middle grade with some higher age humor in it - not unlike many of the computer animated movies lately.

i dont know really anybody here, but what do you do stacer?

the NGE cilp was better - the other one starts to grind away at my nerves because of the music.  The dancing was better though.

i still think we should hold out for some home movies of the 2!!

and to go with the original thread of the post, MySpace is great free advertisement.  If you sell only 100 extra books because of MySpace it's worth it because you paid NOTHING!  Smart move!

The Foo Fighters are NOT sellouts.  Their music gets better and better with each release.

Dr Evil
Stewie
As for the Napoleon dance off, I am torn.  The original has my fav band as the music.  Does the Napoleon Gates?  If it does, then that has it hands down, otherwise i'll have to flip a coin...

I'll wait for the final video for the Peanuts Bracket.

The NGE clip is cool with way awesome music, but not enough dancing.

lets see some home movies!!!!  I know you got em!!!!

wow, tough choices.  if Little, Brown is asking for similar editorial changes, then you have to look at the effectiveness of a solid marketing plan.  what are some of the goodies in the marketing plan, and who would be doing the cover art in the various cases?  I hate to say it, but nearly everyone on some level judges a book by its cover.

also, just a thing i have noticed in dealing with libraries and teachers lately at Waldens - there are many unhappy people with Scholastic right now.  Of course, maybe that's just when they compare Scholastic to my utter awesomeness.

;)

yeah...i guess i should do that whole intoduction thing...Im Steve, a friend of that Elantris guy...what's his name?

Im a senior at BYU doing business managment and marketing, and I am the assistant manager at Waldenbooks up in the Fashion Place mall in Murrey, Utah.

I am pretending to write a bit of Sci-Fi and some Fantasy, but that whole "school thing" keeps getting in my way.

I heard about this place through Brandon after I helped set up his awesome book signing in the Waldenbooks in Provo (where I used to help manage).

Any questions?
