well, congrats to Brandon for receiving the Scalzi (SCALZI!!!!!!!!) Award.  It was quite humorous when Dan and I got him to sign it!!

The "Companion" recieved the Hugo for Serenity.  The entire audience just about passed out.

As far as American Gods goes, I liked it a lot other than one of the short stories thrown in the middle of it.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Sales Numbers
« on: August 19, 2006, 12:25:00 AM »
1.  You also have to factor in the people who sell the book.  I sell just as much (and in many cases more) Brandon Sanderson novels than i do many other "popular-bestselling" authors.  If booksellers make an effort, it is actually very easy to get a person to buy a book.

2.  Some bookstores dont get the books to sell because the main suppliers dont send it out.  We didnt get any copies other than the ones we ordered directly from Tor.

3.  Some stores don't actively look for new authors and new novels - why?  laziness - im am dead serious (B&N is the perfect example with Borders a close second).

4.  He's still a new author.  I know we all love his books, and no one that bought mistborn from me has complained AT ALL.  But, lets face it, many authors dont become big sellers until they either luck out, write something controversial or trashy, or have a large series that people look at and go, "Holy crap look at all these books!"  I had this exact conversation with EUOL the other day.  The more books he gets out the better the ALL will sell.

Those are my observations on the selling side of the book business.

im glad most people had a great time!  it's a lot of work to set up something like this, so it feels really good to have it turn out well.

We have had people coming in yesterday and today to pick up thier copies, so i fully expect to sell out of the 220 copies we ordered within a month.  I wont tell you how many of each book we sold, cause i may get in trouble for that (private compant info and all).

To clarify it all, there was one person in line almost the whole day.  The line started really building at about 3:30 to 4:00 (filled the area infont of Spencers next door to our store).  At about 4:30 and on is when we had to make the secondary line that most people were in.  Hopefully i did an ok job of pullin you guys in without ruffling any feathers!

We still have copies of the book left - although they are going fast.  If anyone still wants one or NEEDS one, com on in.

Steve

Mistborn Event Recap:

well then, heres how it went:

awesome!!!!  There was a pretty long line!  Our store air conditioning broke yesterday...it was kinda hot inside.  Sorry about that eveyone!!!

Brandon sold quite a few novels (im not telling acutal numbers)!!  Apart from the copies of Mistborn, we also sold a fair number of Elantris hardback and paperpack.

I had numerous comparisons drawn between me and a drug dealer....

Brandon was fabulous!  He knows how to work the crowd and make everyone feel good about the story!!  He did a reading from Alcatraz which went over perfectly.  His Q&A was very good.  People actually asked a lot of good questions!!

Pictures:  I took a bunch...if you were there you saw me.  I will try to get them to someone so they can be posted...just tell me who to get them to.

It was good to put some faces with names - to all you, keep in touch!

I hope you all had a good time!  Brandon may be doing more events like this at the same store in the future, i'll keep you all informed!!

Steve

Sprig - since this is an advanced release of Mistborn, we are doing reservations.  It has several purposes.  Mainly, we want to order from Tor only the copies needed.  By having a reserve list, be can be more accurate in that ordering process.
If we order too few, fans get mad at us, and more unfortunatly get mad at Brandon sometimes.
If we order too many, then we have a huge backstock to sell, and have to dig ourselves out of a hole.
It also gives us an idea of how many people to expect that evening.  There are other people coming that night to help promote the event, and they need as much info. as possible.
From a marketing standpoint, a reservation list builds awareness and excitement.  The more excited people are, the more likely they are to tell their friends about it - thus generating even more awareness and excitement.
Apart from that, Brandon is a local favorite.  Just so people understand, Elantris outsold the new books from guys like Martin, Jordan, Hobb, Goodkind (easily), Pratchett, Scott Card, etc.  I am glad he has been nominated for the Campbell, because Elantris could have sold even more copies if people in bookstores did their jobs.  Barnes and Noble names Elantris the best new SF/Fantasy of the year, and they have maybe 2 copies in their stores.  Borders was excited when they sold 5 of his books at a nook signing (that was sucessful to them).  Elantris could have sold double what it did.  So, Mistborn - with more press, and more readers - should sell a TON more.  I want to make sure it does at my store.

That's why there is a reserve list, and that's why he deserves the attention.

no worries shrain

I work at the Waldenbooks in the Provo Town Center Mall - the #1 ranked Waldens in the company I might add!  8)

As far as paying for the book, the company doesn't accept payment in advance on books.  I was told it was a legal issue with street-dates and stuff, but I could be wrong.  Depending on what Tor says, we may be only allowed to sell the book once Brandon gets there, and not before - hopefully this will not be the case.

The event starts at 5pm on July 22nd.  If you want to be put on the reserve list to have your boyfriend, girlfriend, parent, family member, dog, cat, iguana, or friend pick it up for you to get signed by Brandon please send me your name and phone # and the qty of books you want reserved.  I tell you to send it to me because I dont think people should put that kind of info on a forum.

Anyone else who is local can also send me their info and I will sign you up on the reserve list as well.

We have reserved over 70 copies I believe, and the reserve list closes on July 8th.

Please send emails to the address listed on my profile.  I will reply to your email confirming that I have reserved a copy in your name.

You can talk to me at work anytime, my name is Steve.  C'mon in any time and i'll help you to the best of my abilities.  Most people seem to like my recommendations.

The magazine manga are huge!  They easily out sell magazine's like People, FHM, etc...

If a person buys manga, they buy the Shonen Jump and Shojo Beat magazines (hope i spelled those right).

I'll leave that up to Brandon to decide on that topic.  It may be tricky to to that with our signing since its before the nation-wide release and no one else can legally sell it before the 25th of July except the Provo, UT Waldenbooks.

Maybe others have some suggestions...

no worries, i understand.  I was in a hurry to get to work to get people to reserve copies of Mistborn, so I should have looked better.

Anyways, here are some fun facts:

As of close today we have sold nearly 50 Elantris MM (mass market paper-back).

In one week we have have 51 reservations for Mistborn: The Final Empire...only 25 copies less than we sold of the Elantris HB on Black Friday.

Imagine how many we will reserve over the next 3 weeks before we have to turn in the order to Tor for the July 22nd signing.

Signing info:

Mistborn National Release July 22nd @ 5pm-Brandon's hand cramping up.  Brandon will be doing a reading, a Q&A, a special numbering of the signed books for this release.  A discout will be offered on the book.  We also have a ton of other stuff that we are finalizing.  To get the book it is recommended you pre-order it so that we can give accurate numbers to Tor and so the Brandon can salivate on the fun he will have with the mobs of people.  Reservation list closes July 8th.

Any q's?

my apologies - i thought that a new thread that would have actual dates, times, and real info would be good.  I figured some people would want to know the info.  Excuse my ignorance.
