I have the theory that the oathstone is a fabrial like object trapping spren in stone instead of gems, created by a stone shaman.

EDIT: Windrunning is a type of surgebinding, just like a square is a type of rectangle.

Yeah, Sadeas has heard Dalinar repeat whole sections, and even asked to get a copy of it because 'it might entertain [him] to hear more of its little stories'. A few chapters later he bashes heavily on the book, so i don't think he ever got around to all of it. That's why I'd leave him off the list of readers.

Except that Sadeas is really good at hiding the truth.

You're forgetting that a connection between man and spren doesn't necessarily mean man and honorspren.  It's been stated that it could be another type of spren, maybe flame, rot, death, wind etc... So if that is the case who know what other kind of powers there could be.  We've seen a surgebinders powers as far as windrunning used by Kaladin and Szeth, the lashing and so on but I don't think we've seen everything yet.  The powers that Kaladin and Szeth are almost unheard of and not much is known.  Only one character had even a slight idea of what Kaladin was doing and he came from a family who was passing the knowledge down through the generations.  As far as Szeth having his powers through his oathstone I'm not so sure about that.  He has never actually had it in his possession, only his masters have.  Now he could be connected to it and have powers that way, but it sounds like that would be a first as every fabrial or magical type item, from shards to lanterns, have had to be touched in some way to be manipulated.

In fact, I'm working off the assumption that each order of knights has a different type of spren attached to them. But then I started wondering if the type of spren is attached to some other aspect of the magic system.

*cough cough* If that's in Eragon, it was just stolen from Anne McCaffrey's Pern books.

Not that I have anything against Eragon, or Christopher Paolini, in fact I love the books, but there are many parts of Eragon that seem to be influenced heavily by other fantasy books. Same goes for Terry Goodkind, and many other fantasy authors.

The lesson to learn from here is just how hard it is to be original in a genre which has been worked time and time again. The fact that Brandon's books have an air of originality, while still being true to the fantasy genre is very impressive. A bond between horse and rider in a fantasy book is a small thing. I don't even think it can be traced to one book in particular. Many fantasy books include some sort of bond between man and beast.

Maybe. In fact most likely as they both seem to be honourable, though in different ways. (This assumption only works though if each order has a different type of spren. If honourspren could bond with more than one type of order, then this would not hold.)

However, since one magic system is spread over 2 orders of knights, its really to early to tell. If they share a common second magic system, then we will know for definite.

I assume they would wear horseshoes.

In Shin horses would never be allowed on rock, too sacred, so their hooves would unlikely be hardened to allow them to walk rock, but I'm sure there has been some evolution to give the horses a stronger hoof.

I also learned about the inter-connectedness of Brandon's books recently. I am sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but is there a place where there is a comprehensive account about what we actually know about the Cosmere? It seems to me that most of that is from interviews and Q&As and i don't really know where to look.

17th shard is the place to look for interviews and their like. They have a wiki going, but its still in its early stages. Almost everything written in the wiki however is confirmed facts.

Brandon wants his cosmere books to be independent of each other. You don't need to read mistborn to read WoK. At the moment, all info we know about  the cosmere are like easter eggs, gleaned from passages in the books, annotations and Q&A interviews. It's our job as fanatical fans to piece all the information together.  ;)

If you do have any questions, don't be afraid to post them up. Someone will know the answer to them, and we don't mind informing newcomers about stuff which we have found out. (I assume all fans are of the same opinion  :P)

Hmmm, interesting. I must have missed that, so Szeth actually wrote it?

Prologue: To Kill. Penultimate paragraph.

Which is exactly why I made this post.  ;D

I like your idea, but extending it, I remember reading a post about the spren of Heralds. Some people have theorised that Heralds have 'superspren', even more powerful than intelligent spren. Remember that large spren that Axies the Collector saw in Kasitor. There is definitely something strange happening there. Why do we get a spen who is enormous, but likely one of its kind, yet at the other time get thousands of tiny spren?

The excerpt I am referring to occurs prior to the ascension.

I thought he had at least heard excerpts of them with Dalinar. I doubt his heard the whole thing, but with Sadeas you never know...

Books / Re: Looking for "political" epic Fantasy

*Looks at "Writing Excuses" and raises left eyebrow questioningly*
Would you be so kind? 8)

Currently working on a stand alone novel - its a fantasy murder mystery. However I am continously working on the above idea, fleshing out the world building and magic systems. This idea is big, in fact it's epic. I am going to break it down into a number of series, all based during different periods of time, from modern day, to the distant future and even the past. However, I have yet to establish a workable plot to any of the current stories I am playing with. When I finally do get some ideas, I will definitely post up sample chapters in "reading excuses", until then...
