There is too much of the Almighty in the highstorms for them to originally come from Odium, though it is possible for Odium to have 'hijacked' them.

I don't think it the land can just be broken into three parts and a shard given to each part. There is much mixture between the societies, indicating that the shards have influenced more than one culture.

Also, there are two different ways to read this epigraph, one that includes Odium as one of the three, and one that counts him as a 4th.  Which way are you reading it?:
Quote
11.“Three of sixteen ruled, but now the Broken One reigns.”—Collected: Chachanan, 1173, 84 seconds pre-death. Subject: a cutpurse with the wasting sickness, of partial Iriali descent.

Brandon has stated that there are only 3 shards directly related to this series, so I think the former interpretation is more likely (Odium being one of the three).

I don't think its absurd. Fabrials are powered by spren. Syl has the power to bond things, and suddenly Kaladin has that power as well. Spren take Shallan to Shadesmar, and presumably the spren in the goblet asks to be changed.

There is a lot of evidence supporting the powers coming from the spren. Sure, stormlight is needed to fuel the magic, but it is the spren who define the actual magic.

I see no evidence to support that spren have nothing to do with the magic.

I went on to say pretty much what you said, "Vin gets a suspicious feeling about a certain informant in an alley, and does not ask him anything.  Brandon says (somewhere, I forget), that it was Hoid."  To me, Hoid is in HoA, since Brandon said he is, even if he is not named.  I don't think he was named in the first 2 as Hoid either (maybe in one of them, but I'm pretty sure not both).

Hoid is expressly named in the 1st and 3rd Mistborn books, but his name does not appear in WoA.

EDIT: Whoops, thx for that Tasslehoof. I fixed it up

Brandon Sanderson / Tien and Stone Shamans *WoK spoilers*
« on: October 17, 2010, 03:13:13 AM »
Does anything think that Tien's interest in rocks and ability to see the difference between rocks is unusual? Is this some special ability that only a select few people on Roshar have, or just the overworked imagination of a young boy?

If the former, is it possible that if Tien had been born in Shinovar, he could've been a stone shaman?

I really love Tien.  It's too bad that he has already died by the beginning of the book.  *Sigh*

Don't worry. I have a feeling we may see more of him.  ;)

I remember someone saying that Hoid was in HoA, just not mentioned by name, but I have no idea how reliable that source is.

I know Brandon said that Hoid is the Liar of Partinel (which the book is named after). I haven't actually read any chapters from the book, so I cannot be sure if Hoid is the mentor or student.

Well Brandon already said Elantris took place after Odium's visit.  As for the voice in the pool, that can be a little misleading, because rereading that passage, there's no actual voice speaking to Raoden.  It's very carefully phrased as the water SEEMED to be saying to him, its okay, relax, let go...its more like the pool imparted a general impression, rather than in Warbreaker where a voice is said to very specifically offer Lightsong a choice to go back.

I agree. Was about to say the same thing, but you beat me to it.  :P

For me it was the amazing character development. Even for the characters that I hate, I can still acknowledge how well they've been created, and who each character has its own distinct voice.

Even if they want to be trapped willingly, which I don't really believe at all, a fabriel can be used by anyone. Even people that don't reflect the aspect of that spren. E.g. none creative people would be able to use creative spren, what for I do not know, but it would be possible.

Well since all of the epigraphs in WoA got altered by Ruin, I'd say it's likely a subtle manipulation, though I don't know what purpose that serves. I have a document that compares the real version with the version Ruin created, and there are other changes that are WAY more significant. This doesn't really seem that important.

So following that logic, it might also be a typo. But given the amount of copy/pasting that I'm assuming went on with these epigraphs, that also doesn't really make much sense.

Which was exactly the same thing I was thinking.

Aristotle's logic at work!  :)

The intelligence may come from a mutual bonding, not a forced one. In fact, I'm sure of it, as Syl gets her power from the honour of Kaladin. If she was forced to bond someone without honour, her intellect would not change.

I assume they would be some sort of aspect of the cognitive realm. Maybe the intelligent spren are also influenced by the spiritual realm?

It is also possible that this change was one made by Ruin.

Just read the same passage which comes latter in the WoA (the other passage is onpg 174, this is on pg 353) and it calls it the "dark fog" instead of the "black fog".

However, I can't be sure if this is just a mistake on Brandon's part, or a subtle manipulation made by Ruin.  ???

Actually, thinking more on it, wouldn't there only be one metal now? If I recall, Atium was the body of Ati/Chaos, and Lerasium was the body of Leras/Preservation. With one person holding both shards, wouldn't there now only be one metal? So... Sazedium could grant a person limited view of the future along with the powers of a mistborn.

Although, perhaps there will be no god metals at all. If Lerasium came about because of Preservation's sacrifice and Atium because of Chaos's imprisonment, wouldn't that mean that Sazedium will only come about if Sazed sacrifices a portion of his power, is imprisoned by another Shardholder, or other such cosmic event?

Ruin, not Chaos!

Anyway, the metals were the physical embodiments of the shards, named after the person who held that shard. So Atium and Lerasium will still exist separately, as the shards are still separate, just held by only one shardholders. Maybe the names should be changed as Ati and Leras are now dead, but they've been called atium and lerasium for so long now, there really isn't any point changing them.
