Everything Else / Mistborn vs. Asha'man
« on: October 14, 2010, 09:41:41 AM »
*Ding ding ding*
Round two! ;D
The situation is the following:
On one side: A Mistborn, armed with two glass daggers, of average strength.
On the other side: An Asha'man armed with one sword and trained in Aiel hand-to-hand combat.
Setting: An abandoned city at night.
No balefire or Atium are available; not only because both are one-hit kill tools but also because of the paradoxes their use would create.
Who wins?

Books / Re: Looking for "political" epic Fantasy
« on: October 14, 2010, 09:17:05 AM »
I also like political fantasy. Unfortunately its hardly ever done, and it never really takes a preference. Most of Brandon's books include politics - Elantris, Warbreaker, Misborn - but they're not the major plots.

I am working on an idea for a story at the moment which is based on a huge parliament like government called the Court, where only powerful magicians are given seats. There are lots and lots of different parties, each one trying to fight for coalitions and superiority. However, it is still a work in progress.  :(
Like  a blend of the White Tower and the magicians Guild on steroids?  ;D
I'd like to hear some more about this!
*Looks at "Writing Excuses" and raises left eyebrow questioningly*
Would you be so kind? 8)

Yeah that's a good point.  I know I've seen a bit of speculation about the fact that Szeth is Truthless, having an Oathstone, and Kaladin having an honorspren that is connected to his access to his powers.  However Szeth seems to have attained his honor, at least to me.  However I don't see how an honor spren would consider murdering innocent people honorable because someone dishonorable holds the Oathstone that binds Szeth's honor.  I really wish we had more info here, is the next book out yet  :P
He is honouring his oaths by doing whatever is required of him.

Also, Mare really has no reason to want to destroy all the Atium , since it happens to be the only thing keeping her and Kelsier alive.

This.

Tin wouldn't really help her to get out of the pits,

It's dark down there, which would be a motivation for me to use tin.
Not to escape, but simply to make life a little bit better for myself.

The word that immediatly comes to mind is dynamic, with the full force of the original word behind it.
Great work, Zlurpo
Have the scenes of the fountain-square execution or Sazed's acension been done  yet ITT?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Who has read The Way of Kings (minor spoilers)

I thought there had been some other mention of Gavilar learning to read passages from the book on his own, from Dalinar or Navani. Could be wrong, though.
No, AFAIK that was a misconception of Dalinar's beacause Szeth had written the meassage on the wall in the first person which led Dalinar to assume that he (Gavilar) had written it himself.

Hey, I already posted that theory!! ;D
A part of it at least...
I think it's likely because a gem discharges over the course of weeks, whereas the longest a human can hold his stormlight is a couple of minutes.
[see prologue and sezth's comment about voidbringers]

Heh, sorry.  Didn't mean to steal your thunder. This seemed like a good place to summarize what people have been speculating about Greatshells. I've noticed a lot of threads tend to digress, so I just wanted to pull everything together in one place. :)

Haha!  :D
S'alright, ^_^

My theory is that thunderclasts are a type of golem-like creature that get summoned at the scene of battle.
Maybe a spren placed in a gem is used to animate the stone and give it a certain measure of intelligence...

Do you remember what happened to the evil vizier at the end of Aladdin's lamp after he wished to be a Djinn?
Yea, I think that's what happens to entities "bound" with a dawnshard. >:D

great minds think alike eh?
I guess...  ;D

To me he is not supporting one shard, or even trying the reunite the shards. Instead he is ensuring that no shard becomes dominant over all others. There seems to be a balance which is restored at the end of all Brandon's books.
That sounds about right...

Whatever the monetary success might be, he still isn't known enough for my taste.
Or maybe you have to write shallow nonsense to get widely know these...  :-\
