Brandon Sanderson / Re: Hoid's Shard abilities in WoK (minor spoilers)
« on: October 01, 2010, 07:04:31 PM »
I had mentioned before that the "rock" could be adonalsium, but by fleshing out my idea, I start to feel like I'm writing fanfic:

We already know Hoid can use Shadesmar -- the Cognitive Realm.  If that's because he actually exists in the cognitive realm, then he's actually a thought - a concept.  If he held Adonalsium and made it crappy for holding it, he broke it.  Or at least contributed to its shattering.  So what would he represent?  How about the responsibility for all of its pieces?  Thus, he manifests on every world because they are all his responsibility.

And while all of that seems sound to me, I can't help but read it and think "I'm way off in left field."

That's 2 conclusion jumps in one sentence!  Though it's a good theory, we can't say definitively that Seons are splinters.  And while we're at it, I don't think a being created from a splinter can automatically see the future.  Feasible, sure.  But there's really no reason to think they can, yet.

I like the caltrops idea, if they can create them somehow (pretty easy to send 10 guys to a neighbor plateau you expect the Alethi to come from).

2 thoughts I have though:
We know the Parshendi provoked the Alethi but we have no idea why.  They seemed to have planned the fight on the plains.  It could be that they are just giving the Alethi enough resistance so that the Alethi keep fighting, but for whatever reason they don't actually want to win.  Breaking the treaty makes no sense with all the information we've been given.  I feel like the Parshendi wanted this long drawn out war for some reason.  They want the Alethi where they are.  If it was too hard for the Alethi, they might not keep fighting, but they could get suspicious if it was too easy.  I think the Parshedi are giving just enough resistance to keep going.  Although they really don't want to lose the tower, ever, which is why they always bring more people there.  Also, once Dalinar and Sadeas joined up, they brought more men to even the match. It really doesn't seem like the Parshendi are trying to "win", just stall.

Has anyone seen the Parshendi burn the bridges? Or do they just assume it was them?  Could something else want it to not be super easy for the Alethi so they burn just enough bridges to make them work building new ones?  With all the scouts searching for the chasmfiends, which we know they still do at night, how has no one seen the Parshendi burning the bridges (or have they and I missed that?)

Perhaps the Parshendi want the Alethi to help them take the gemhearts (lending credence to the idea that it's not good if the chasmfiends complete their pupation).

More from Mistborn, scraping a failing memory...

*The Lord-Ruler, but he was burning the essence of a deity at the time, so I'd say that counts as a Ruin/Preservation point.

*The Kandra prophecies.  Were these things the Lord Ruler told them upon creating them?  Or did they find the future another way?

The idea of a Unity shard - the embodiment of the ideal - splitting, is more than a little ironic.  That is all.

Shouldn't your first reading require a comma after "will"?

I always took for granted that it was the latter.  Since my theory is still that Hoid is a shadesmar creature creating physical representations of himself on all the planets he touches, death of the "avatars" would be a small thing, indeed.

I'm willing to bet Elhokar's associated with Zircon/Betab.  Wise/Careful -- we'll eventually see Wise when he starts showing the potential Dalinar's always talking about him having.  But paranoia's about as careful as it gets.

Kaladin is dangerous no doubt about it. But Szeth is a friggin killing machine. Lets not forget that Gavilar was considered one of the best swordsman alive, and Szeth took him down. The he took down what 3? 4? Full Shard bearers at once? I suppose it depends on the time line we are talking about.  If Kaladan actually gets trained then I expect to see a serious battle on par with Drizzt vs Artemis

Ew.  Salvatore's "spin like a top with swords in hands" fight scenes.  I'd prefer to think "on par with Kelsier vs the Steel Inquisitor."

Szeth's good, and has a huge edge against Kaladin.  But... Kaladin killed a man with shardplate and shardblade.  Wth ordinary weapons.  That's absolutely insane.

And it certainly would be cool if Taln's the reason none of the main characters kill each other.  Szeth sure would be surprised to fight someone who understands his lashings likely as well as he does.  Bonus points if shardblades can't harm him (Stonesinew's the name, and all that).  That'd be a shock to Szeth.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Magic system based on sound waves?? (minor spoilers)
« on: September 25, 2010, 06:39:28 PM »
And so it's simple to remember that we call it magic because it's a section of science that doesn't exist in the real world.  As a "hard magic" writer, we accept that in Sanderson's worlds, there is no such thing as magic.  And none of this magic definition has anything to do with sound magic.

Since it was said ahead of time that the magics of the world would be based on real physics such as thermodynamics and gravity, I think the sound wave method is a very safe and clever assumption.

Well I dont think learned people normally consider themselves to have a magic superpower, so how would Jasnah have learned of her abilities

But smart and learned people are more likely to discover the ins and outs of a newfound superpower than a superpowered moron.  This is why Vin always wins, afterall.

Pretty sure when the Prelude was first released on Tor's site, someone commented on the Talenel/Taln typo to which Peter confirmed to be a knickname.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: What are the words?
« on: September 23, 2010, 05:23:06 PM »
I could be wrong, but I think what the OP means is "what made them think it's from the Way of Kings?"

timeline:
1st: Dalinar is informed of his brother's dying words
2nd: Jasnah discovers it's from The Way of Kings

so.... what quote did Jasnah find?!

I expect it was something where Nahodan simply said something in his narrative where he included the line.  Something like "It's a leader's duty to his people to find the most important words he could say" or some such.

The rock could've been Adonalsium.  /back at the "Hoid broke the universe" theory again.
