Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: The Heralds *Spoilers*

The beggar could be Jezrien. Man in his 30ies with black, short trimmed beard + 4500 years = beggar with long black/gray beard.

It would also fit the "King becomes beggar" theme BS used in Elantris.
Yeah, but the only connection there is that they both have beards.  By that reasoning, Rock could also be Jezrien.

Although, now that I think about that, Rock as a Herald would be completely awesome.

I think she destroys the artworks because she's vain and doesn't like how they make her look.
Or because she's ashamed of what she did, and doesn't like other people looking at her.
Which would make you wonder, what was so shaming that she no longer wants people to look at her>
Abandoning the Oathpact, of course.

There are few theories on 3. My favorite is that his curse was losing his memories of his wife. Or, that he actually asked for those memories to be taken away.

For four, I think that Szeth learned Surgebinding and got a Shardblade because he believed the Voidbringers were coming back, and he would be needed to stop them. However, since the Shin culture looks down on warriors, he was punished for seeking such destructive weapons. Therefore, he holds on to them, because he thinks they're necessary, but his people rejected him for it.

For seven... I'm not sure. One of the historical records in Jasnah's notes mentions rising taxes in Urithiru, which it says are a sign that "the Radiant's true nature was beginning to show". I think it's possible that the Radiants were corrupted by Odium.

8. Keep in mind that the Stormfather is Jezrien. It's certainly possible, but it depends a lot on what he's been up to since abandoning the Oathpact.
11. I think that the enhanced strength/speed/vitality is just part of the power of Adonalsium, since it's shared by Elantrians and the Returned.

Oh someone PLEASE!!!!!! waterboard Goodkind!! My hope is that he is working with scientists to manufacture shardblades.  ;D

This would no doubt inspire Goodkind to write a novel about the incident, explaining -- at great length -- how waterboarding him was perfectly justified. Unfortunate side-effects would be a) sex scenes involving waterboarding, and b) Goodkind writing another novel. So I have to say it's not worth it.
My spleen hurts from laughing so hard.

Books / Re: Looking for "political" epic Fantasy
« on: September 24, 2010, 07:26:57 PM »
The Long Price Quartet by Daniel Abraham fits the bill (moreso in the second, third, and fourth books than in the first, though).

The first book is called "A Shadow in Summer".

The Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks also has some politics in it, although it's not really a focus.

Its a fifth Alcatraz book.

(*crosses fingers and wishes really hard*)
I doubt that, given how dissatisfied he's been with Scholastic.

what is wrong with scholastic?
He's mentioned several times that they're difficult to work with, since he doesn't see eye to eye with them.

I was under the impression that Shalash was a girl and did not have her safe hand covered, and since that is pornographic in Alethi culture, the statue was hidden from view
I don't think we know that for sure. I posted that as a guess at one point, but that theory was basically pulled out of thin air.

Personally, I think there is something more going on.

It could also be Cultivation.

For the same reason Ruin didn't take Preservation's shard.

I thought that was because Ruin was the antithesis of Preservation, and so he really couldn't. Sazed hadn't been twisted/converted or changed by a Shard yet so he could grab both.

Neither Shard from Elantris sounded like the opposite of Odium, but I guess this explanation does help.
It's also possible that Aona and Skaze purposefully splintered their own shards upon death to prevent Odium from taking them.

Anyways, we know from the epigraphs that Rayse (who I think most of us are assuming to be Odium) killed Aona and Skai, the Shardholders on Elantris, and then proceeded to Splinter their power so they couldn't be taken up by someone else and used to oppose him.  Now we also know, from Dalinar's visions, that Odium killed the Almighty, who seems to be his prime opponent on Roshar.

I asked this on a different topic but this is more relevant. Why did Odium splinter the Shards of Aona and Skai? Why not take them for himself?
For the same reason Ruin didn't take Preservation's shard.

Probably because he couldn't use them, much like Ruin couldn't use Preservation's.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Rights For Spren!!!! (minor spoilers)
« on: September 23, 2010, 10:24:55 PM »
I think we should actively try to trap the spren, what if we were able to trap all the bad spren, no deathspren=no death, no rotspren=no rot, because as everybody knows the spren cause the things they are associated to.  In fact lets go for broke and try to trap ALL the spren, then we can experience their properties whenever WE want to, rather than waiting for spren to show up
You assume that they're the cause of these things, rather than a side effect.
