Brandon Sanderson / An idea for information!
« on: September 09, 2010, 05:12:49 PM »
I think we should start filling out a wiki with all the confirmed information that we have, so for like those who can't seem to remember who that guy was with a weird name they can check the wiki without looking at the book.
There is already a wiki made for Brandon Sanderson but it is quite empty, lets fill it up.
I think if we do this we should stay away from theories and only have confirmed information though.

Books / Re: Fantasy girls, where are you?

Honestly I read like half the first page, but for female leads I would say the "Incarnations of Immortality" series by Peirs Anthony. Like you can tell from the title, they are about the persona of characters like Death, Time, Earth, War, and such. For about every male lead there is an equally strong and important female lead.

Actually, with about 18 months left to go before AMoL is supposed to be released and four books left in the series to finish reading before then, I'd say read CoT first, and maybe even KoD after that.  That way you'll see what RJ was able to finish, take a break from the Wheel as we all did after he passed (reading WoK and any others you might want to), and then pick up Brandon's co-written last three and hit em bang-bang-bang, all the way to the end.  If you're a big fan of Brandon's, I'd still get WoK now, to help with first-week sales and all though.  :)

I'm always a fan of hitting Amazon if I'm looking for a specific book.  Knife of Dreams hardcover, for instance, is $12 with free shipping if you spend more than $25.  Total deal.  Looks like the Gathering Storm hardcover is about $20 right now.  And Towers of Midnight pre-orders for $16.  Whoa.  If you can't get to a bookstore, try that instead.

Yeah I generally do eBooks as I am quite impatient while waiting to get a book. Now when I collecting things I do like to get the nice Hardbacks, which I plan to do during the small break where I will not have anything to read, thus nothing to spend money on.
Thanks for the advice so far guys.

Is the quality of the ebook art a publishers decision or is it limitations of the kindle? That would imply the art may be better on higher end devices like the iPad.
It can be both, depending on the file size they choose the book to be. My books without pictures are about 1MB (Sony) TWoK is 8MB so we might have art that is more readable but I don't know the pages as I haven't started yet.

Just a warning for a lot of people, I've heard from a very reliable source that all of the images won't be included in the paperback version of the book.  So it is doubly worth it to purchase the hb, just to make sure you have the images.

Interesting, perhaps Peter could comment on this.

We've been having a similar conversation over on the eBook thread.  Reports are that while most/all of the illustrations are included in the eBook, they seem not to have been included at a very high resolution.  The text is apparently fuzzy, etc.

It would be fun if there were some other way to get the illustrations.

If someone can tell me what pages they are on I can confirm or deny them being like that on Sony's one.

Books / Which book, help!

Okay I hate to stop reading a series when I am in the middle of it. I am just about to start reading "Crossroads of Twilight" but I also just bought TWoK, I can't decide which one to read. I thinking maybe TWoK first because Tor still hasn't gotten around to releasing all of TWoT series as eBooks and where I live makes it quite hard for me to get to a big book store as a minor.

@Calvin: Try the audiobooks for your second run through. The readers are very good. They get a few pronunciations wrong in the first book, but it is corrected after that. They are very good to listen to if you have read the books (so you have an idea of what is going on) while doing other things. Your library should have them all since they are best sellers.

I just started reading Lord Fouls Bane from Stephen R Donaldson. I do not know if his fantasy world is as complex as some authors today. However, he seems to be considered a classic and alot of modern authors site him for inspiration. I think Brandon has and I think Bookstore guy has said he likes.

Alot of people on the Books forum really like Stephen Erickson. The first book did not do anything for me. People keeping saying it is the 3rd book that grabs you.

Brandon has also raved about LE Modesit. Though I have not read him yet.
Tad Williams is one that Brandon read as a kid. I think he is more of a Tolkein clone, but I am not sure. Have not read them.

I really liked Weiss and Hickmans Deathgate Series from the 1990s. They are the founders of the Dragonlance universe.

Michael Moorcock from the 1960s Elric books. These tend to be shorter. The world is not as complex. However, it is very dark and basically nihilistic. These are pretty short books.

A woman I used to work with really likes Jennifer Roberson.
It's been a while since I have read Stephen R Donaldson but he is an amazing writer, I especially liked his Mordant's Need. It was really amazing, the series is like a war against reality though it can get very graphic compared to some books and I would definitely say it is for adults (Not one but my dad didn't remember that being in the books).

And yes Weis and Hickman are amazing world builders, I have 12 books of theirs from Dragonlance and  I love everyone of them.

I think it's because of convenience.  My bet is that people want the book NOW and don't want to have to go to the book store or order it and wait.  That's why the kindle with wireless took off so fast.  Also, I ordered my hardback from Amazon (wanted it to credit in first week sales, even though I already have an ARC) and it was on sale for LESS than $25, so shipping wasn't free.  Plus with shelf space and size (1000 pages is huge for a hard back), it's a lot easier to hold the kindle and carry it around.
I'm a Sony fan here but I agree, I bought it as soon as I found it on Sony's eBook page. Even while I did this I plan to go down to a bookstore possibly this weekend and buy the hardback.

Reading Excuses / Re: Your Background

Hey, I'm Cardon, but in a lot of the RPGs I play I go by Kierlionn. I am a junior in High School and I am hoping to improve my writing skills and perhaps write a small book. (Very small, under 200 pages.) I actually don't plan to go into writing as a career but I absolutely love to read, I plan to go into computer programming.

Even though I love to read Sci-Fi and Fantasy I have never quite considered myself creative, I excel at writing factual papers but when asked to do anything creative struggle quite badly. Through doing this I am hoping I can overcome that struggle and greatly improve in my creative writing abilities.

Brent Weeks is an interesting read, he did keep me reading and I didn't want to put the books down but... I wouldn't quite say he is like Brandon. The characters do get quite a bit deeper as the story goes, he does kill of characters after you become quite attached to them making you want to just yell at the author as I have been guilty of a few times, I just can't stand seeing my favorites die. Sorry but I just can't seem to quite say how I think they are different, they just didn't feel the same to me.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: How did you find out about Brandon Sanderson?
« on: September 01, 2010, 09:13:16 AM »
My parents and I were visiting Provo while we were on a road trip, I convinced them to take me into the BYU Book Store, and went straight to the Fantasy/Sci-Fi section, the huge stack of numbered and signed Warbreaker books sitting in a pile caught my attention, it looked quite interesting and I needed more books to read so I tried to convince my parents to get it for me. Sadly they said no, but they said they would get me three other books if they were cheap paperbacks, I saw the Mistborn series and decided to grab those. I haven't regretted it yet, and I doubt I will.

Hey, my name is Cardon. I live in the amazing state of Hawaii and no it isn't all paradise, we get too much rain for my liking. I am 15, but I will be turning 16 the 18th of September. I love to read books, but my favorite genre is Fantasy. I started out with Terry Brooks when I was about 10 and have loved books every since. I have played the Violin on and off since the 4th grade. I listen to all genres of music but my favorite genres would have to be Hardcore, Hard Trance, Hard House, and Hardstyle.

My family has been going to BYU since it was College not University. My grandparents on my mothers side both teach at a college in Ohio. Well that is all I can really think of that is interesting.
