He also mentioned something else to me about a certain thesis which was nice to hear, however.  ;)

A copy has been recovered? :o

I agree.  But as long as there are power outages, corrupt files, the potential to drop the kindle, etc., I'm sure that hard-bound books will exist.  Newspapers, however, may go out of style.

Yeah...it was about 4-5 months ago, if I remember right, that e-book reader prices dropped significantly.  I think it's finally come into its own.  I wasn't thinking about buying a reader until then myself.  I'm also waiting for technology to become a little more stable (like the whole VHS vs. Betamax thing...I want to buy the one that will be around for decades).

@guessingo

I think you'll really enjoy Stephen R. Donaldson.  I've read and reread his entire Thomas Covenant series (actually 2 and 2/3 series so far) several times.  He's one of the best world builders around in my opinion, with rich development of his races and totally unique magic systems.  He is a lot like Tolkien in the questing format, but I enjoy him more.

If you're on Lord Foul's Bane, go ahead and get the next two, because you'll be frustrated if you finish and can't move right into them.

I think it's because of convenience.  My bet is that people want the book NOW and don't want to have to go to the book store or order it and wait.  That's why the kindle with wireless took off so fast.  Also, I ordered my hardback from Amazon (wanted it to credit in first week sales, even though I already have an ARC) and it was on sale for LESS than $25, so shipping wasn't free.  Plus with shelf space and size (1000 pages is huge for a hard back), it's a lot easier to hold the kindle and carry it around.

Thanks.  Actually, I have read Robert Jordan, but gave up when I got to book 8 or so.  Now that Brandon's writing the last 3 books, I plan to go back and reread them all, but if I'm going to invest that much time in them, I'll want to read them all at once.  I'll be getting them all again when the final book is finished (I know it doesn't help first week sales, though).

So...how many people showed up?  Those of us who don't live in Utah wanted to be there.  Details would be nice.

Brandon Sanderson / Other Writers Like Brandon?

I read someone's statement in another thread that the way that they found Brandon was by reading other novels and seeking out someone who wrote like them (thus they found Brandon).  Since his style is so cool (new worlds, new magics, etc., rather than the typical fireball throwing wizards), I'm always looking for new stuff that's like his.  So far, although not as polished as Brandon, the closest book that I've found to Brandon's writing style is Spellwright by Blake Charlton, but he's only published ONE book, and that was just this year.  I'm hoping that he keeps going and eventually comes into his own.  I like character development, but Brandon's the master of world development.  I also like Raymond Feist's Empire series...I wish he'd done more with Kelewan than going back and fixating on the Midkemia side.

Can anyone recommend any other good books/authors to sate the Sanderson-esque hunger in the meantime? (I'll be rereading all of Brandon's books as well).

Brandon Sanderson / Re: How did you find out about Brandon Sanderson?
« on: August 31, 2010, 04:46:02 PM »
None ever did to me what Mistborn, Elantris and Warbreaker did, however. And now, I'm just a huge fan of Brandon. What's left for me to do, is try to convert my fellow Dutchies to fans as well. Noone's ever even heard of him!
It's just a matter of time!  I love that Brandon's younger than me and a prolific writer...just means that we'll be seeing a LOT more of him!  (but never quite enough...*sigh*)

I think Allison Scagliotti is a little too... well, boy-ish, to play Siri. I imagine Siri more like the cute girl that's a little mean on the inside. A little like Mackenzie Rosman, maybe.

Allison Scagliotti would be an awesome Vin, though!
You're right...she'd make a MUCH better Vin.  I like the wit and the self-doubt that she brings (doesn't hurt that she's cute, either).

It's killing me, but I'm taking this one really slow, since I don't know when the next Brandon Sanderson book will be out.  I'm trying to savor the characters and world development a little at a time.  It's like eating an amazing sundae...it's so good you want to eat it all at once, but you know that if you do, it will be gone all too soon (and if you eat it too fast, you might get a brain freeze!)

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Book Signings

Couple of quick questions:

1)  How many people do they expect to show up to the non-Provo WoK book signings?  I live in D.C. and with it only being 2 hours, I was wondering if I need to get there early and/or if there will be any "chat" time with Brandon before/after.

2)  Peter, do you ever go on the book signing tours?

Brandon Sanderson / Myst/Mistborn
« on: August 30, 2010, 01:23:58 PM »
I love the multitude of worlds that Brandon can create with the stroke of a pen, and it brought to mind the magnificence of the Myst series of games that was decades ahead of its time...a bit mysterious with lots of unique worlds that came to a stunning, almost (but not quite) unanticipated conclusion.

The power of Brandon's writings, though, is that what Myst does visually, he can do merely with the written word.  I love a series that sets my imagination on fire.

Of all of Brandon's books I've read so far, Scribbler seems by far the easiest to bring to the big screen...of course, it will need the sequel before it gets to that point.  Any word on how many books will be in that series?  It ends with LOTS of potential for the future.

The island states connected by clockworks rail is a cool idea.  It gives a sense of "alternate universe".  I love the unique worlds that Brandon creates.   I wish I had time to just sit and chat with him for a few hours.
