Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Paolini Takedown Challenge
« on: July 12, 2010, 11:27:50 PM »
Be that as it may, I totally think that with a year of concentrated effort, we could pass Paolini up - Especially since the age thing isn't really a factor anymore, and the Eragon trilogy is dead.

(It was a trilogy, right? I stopped paying attention at some point)

Anyways. Totally doable. I'm pulling up some sales figures right now, to get a better idea of what we're looking at here.

I'm waiting for Brandon to get down here to buy hardcovers for signing (though I think I have to make a decision on which ones...darned limits) and I'm gonna start getting paperbacks as gifts.

I'm impressed at your dedication though...what do you do with 5 copies of Well of Ascension?

Brandon Sanderson / The Paolini Takedown Challenge

Peter the Insoluble (very) recently issued the following statement, in regards to Mr. Sanderson and Christopher Paolini sharing a panel.

Like it or not, Paolini has sold more books. So there are a large number of Paolini fans who will go to the panel...and get to hear Brandon and Patrick be awesome.

And it is true! Unacceptable, but true.

So, I issue the following challenge to all Sanderson fans:

By our combined mob-mentality forces, Brandon will have sold more books than Paolini by July 12, 2011

Tell your friends! tell your families! Spread the word that yes, there is a writer of compelling fantasy in this day and age actually worthy of our coin!

Who's with me?!

Well, that's where we come in, right? The mob of devoted fans, dedicated to spreading the word of Sandersonism to the (insert number) corners of the earth?

In fact, I issue a challenge! Everybody hold on a second while I make a thread for my challenge.

However you want, but I think you should probably add Dragonsteel 3 before Dragonsteel 4.

Plus you may want to indicate Cosmere books somehow.

there's that word again! yes, I like that idea - I can use it as a study guide!

Wolfstar is a hero among men. Truly! My former theater director had to do an adaptation of Eragon for the stage once. It...did not work. at all. Mostly because their objective is revealed futile halfway through and its a lot of wandering around. Deeply saddening to audiences.

Anyways. I'm wishing I'd been able to make it to that.

I guess I wasn't counting wheel of time 'n' Alcatraz. As you said, 5 so far in the Cosmere (which is an Awesome word, by the way), with a sixth on the way. Maybe I need to get my hands on Elantris and then...meditate for a day or so.

I'm pretty sure Sazedium was a joke. Everyone knows that if Sazed invented an Allomantic metal, it'd be call Ithinkium.

Ahhh that info-dump. Never has dense exposition been delivered with such flair.

Also colors. pretty...

So back in that other thread that Mister Miyagbi started, there's a list of...what, 50 books? 25 of which actually exist?

of which 5 have been published?

it seems like this cosmology is a little hard to get at (let alone speculate on) given that...

I just found this annotation for Hero of Ages, which answer the question of how Yomen found out he was a seer:

Quote
Yomen Is a Seer

That raises the question of how Yomen discovered that he was a Seer. He mentions that atium was too valuable to waste on testing for atium Mistings. That's true, but incomplete. The Lord Ruler did test his obligators for the power, particularly the high-ranking ones. Those he found were told of their power and used as an extra level of security. There weren't many, but there were some—and they tended to rise very quickly in the ranks (like Yomen) and be given important positions. Yomen's power with atium made him a valuable secret weapon, and when in a position of power, he could use his ability to quell rebels or perform feats of wonder to keep the people in line.[/quote

So...there's that...

Also, I realized I've been spelling his name Yeoman...which is actually the last name of the guy he was named after. My bad.

I read on some website...that there are these weapons/armors that are sort of a big deal.

The Shardblades/Shard-armour-whatsits? How do you figure?

I mean, admittedly, I haven't read the sample chapters yet, but I have a feeling that the Blades and armour won't have that much of an impact on the story. MAYBE a few mentions here and there, in passing, but I doubt they'll tie into any of the book's plotlines.

Sarcasm whatsits? How do you figure?

Lol, that Iron Man analogy really pulls the lid off the target audience here. Especially since it put me so quickly at ease...

what I'm wondering is where I find all the sources for this speculation. I haven't seen very many references to Shards or Addonalsium (sp?!??!?!) in Brandon's work so far...

then again I'm only 4 books in...what am I missing?
