Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Paolini Takedown Challenge
« on: July 21, 2010, 04:40:42 PM »
So I've taken my first step down phaz lane - I found out the other night that one of my friends in Maryland is an aspiring science fiction writer, and happened to have a copy of Elantris on me...which I was about 7 chapters in on...so I gave it to him and said I'd pick up another copy of it. Now I just need to, you know, do that.

When I get back I'm gonna build up an arsenal. True story.

From what I understand, the genetics of the people on given planets determine their reaction (if any) to the influence of a shard's presence.

Brandon said at some point, talking about Mistborn and Elantris, that if you took people from one planet and transported them to the other, that they wouldn't neccessarily lose or gain any magic - it all had to due with the specifics of their genetics.

So to me, that means that the shards just put out a passive  "magic" passive field. If you have the correct genetic structure, you can then take advantage of that field to perform extraordinary feats. Genetics play a big part in the magic systems. How much of a part I haven't really figured out, but there's definitely something.

In term of the polini debate, c.p. did write decent cliche fantasy. I have read and greatly enjoyed his books. Sanderson is my favorite author and he is much more talented than polini but that does not detract from polini's young accomplishments. I think people should not  bash his desire to finish his breakout series without others influence. No one on this forum has made an accomplishment like his and therefor do not have the situational knowledge polini did when deciding to turn down classes.

The fourth book will be released. Polini has stated that he will make the dragon seeries into 4 books. He takes too long to publish but not all can be sandersons.

Also phaz, what is the name of wind

I don't think the debate is whether he's a good author or not, but rather whether Brandon's fanbase has enough of the same mentality as the Marines (You know, 'The Few, The Proud?' ) to surpass him.

on another note I'm pretty sure the wind is named Georgiana

I just looked up the word Erstwhile. It didn't mean what I thought it did.

Master Miyabi is still very much Master Miyabi.

I DID however, mean effervescent. now THERE'S a nice word.

Asking of the translating is the showing of the wit, notting the wit to show of Firby. Notting have the skill of this game.

(By asking for a translation you are revealing your knowledge, or lack thereof. You're bad at this game.)

 ;D I jest!

You all could learn a lesson from Phaz here! Really, in an ideal world, we could all be Phazes (Phazi?) and drug-push Brandon straight to fortune and fame!

I think I'm going to adopt your philosophy. Hope you don't mind.

There's a reason for that - Vin as portrayed on the paperback cover looks remarkably like Ellen Page

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Awakening: Immoral Practice?
« on: July 15, 2010, 06:29:31 AM »
I think that Vivenna's people, the Idrians, agree with you - Their society is based on it, in fact.

I'd like to play devil's advocate here: I'm not 100% sure I was comfortable with Awakening and breath-transfer, but the jury's still out.

In the meantime, consider the analogies given: Organ donation may be seen as immoral as it leaves the donor less whole. However, it allows someone else to live. Presumably, and in a lot of cases, it allows someone the donor cares about deeply to live - which is much the way that many people who sell their breath to the Returned feel. Jewels was an example of this: A drab, yes, but she took pride in it.

To use the other example, I've seen prostitution used as an example as well, but isn't that circumstantial as well? consider the following example:

a wife and her ten children transfer their breath to her husband so that he might become an Awakener, and do great things. In fact, she gathers her extended family and convinces them all to invest in him, to help him represent their family in honor and yadda yadda yadda. He goes on to use that breath to do great things, and bring happiness to his family. Is his whole family whoring themselves out to him, or is it a sign of trust and love?

Furthermore, if the breath is transferred to an Awakener on a deathbed, in the manner Vivenna received hers? When she couldn't have refused it? Is that immoral?

Muddy is the issue indeed.

Yoda must move on to another topic now...one more lighthearted perhaps.
