Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: Random Thoughts after reading (Spoilers)
« on: September 27, 2010, 11:10:52 PM »
1.  I really don't think that likely... She never, ever, even hinted at possessing a shardblade.  Even though she kept the fact that she killed her father a secret for that long, I just don't think that someone would go so far out of the way to steal a "real" Soulcaster when they themselves owned a shardblade.  Even if you don't sell your shardblade, I feel like there are a lot of ways to make money just having it.

2.  I thought some of them were from Taln also.

3.  I'm not sure what you mean by "become the Blackthorn", be a good fighter?  Literally be called the Blackthorn?  I feel like he was already an amazing fighter, considering one of his sons is just as good as him.  His curse was most likely that he can't remember his wife, although that always seemed a little too obvious to me.

4.  Yeah, I'm not really sure.  I think thats one of the most talked about lines from the book, and it happens in the prologue :p

7.  I kind of thought this also, especially how as soon as the Radiants drop their Shardplate/Blades, and Dalinar follows them, the soldiers literally start killing each other over the blades.  It shows that the people who inherited the weapons/armor were not of the same virtues  as the Radiants themselves.

8.  Likely, although once again that seemed almost too obvious too :p

9.  There may be no Spren in Shinovar, but I don't remember ever hearing/seeing that there was no "magic" there either.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                   __
10.  No.  Aons look all have a basic similarity, I don't have my book on me, but I think it resembles this    *|.  None of those even look similar to that.  Although, there is a reoccurring theme that geometry is important in many of the cities, I don't think it pertains to warcamps that were originally very temporary in nature.  I think its Navoni that says Sadeas' street layout is very reckless, and non-geometric.  I do agree though that the warcamps look like something, its probably just convenient ways to lay it out.

11.  There are very few fantasy books/stories where one form of, or all of the magical beings possess extra strength, agility, or healing powers.  Its just a theme that people often use because those 3 abilities are extremely valuable in nearly every situation I can think of.  Lashings are similar to pushing and pulling, but its just Brandon's way of having characters who can control gravity without really just flying.  It makes it more exciting, and makes you think about how the characters perform some of their maneuvers.  Its much more impressive to me when people can jump and Lash different objects, and themselves in different directions all at the same time, rather than just flying around.

12.  Like I said, the geometry obviously has significance, we just aren't sure exactly how far it goes yet.  I'm sure we'll find out in the next novels, but its definitely interesting to think about right now.

What Never said. :p
I have a theory that "Cultivation" is the entity Sazed become (simply because that concept incorporates both Ruin and Preservation so well IMO) after becoming a "full" deity.

This doesn't really jive with the idea that Roshar has 3 shards, if Sazed was Cultivation, there would be 4 shards.  Unless, when someone gets 2 shards, they form 1?  I just don't imagine it like that in my mind.  We know Odium, the Almighty, and Cultivation are all shards, and no where does Brandon suggest that Cultivation is the morphing of 2.  Although it is entirely possible, I really just highly doubt it :P

I think someone in another thread stated that spheres have Spren trapped inside.  While I'm not sure if its true by Brandon's standpoint, the evidence they gave made it sound very likely.  And since we already know spren can speak, I would assume that that might be what was speaking to Shallan.

alright youve convinced me we cant trap all spren, but what about painspren, fearspren and intoxicationspren?  There must be tons of things out there that we can get rid of maybe there is a sociopathspren, or crimespren, we could make a mostly perfect world ;D

Crimespren would be cool, especially if you were a cop.. totally easy to catch people if spren are flying around them :P

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Favourite Minor Character
« on: September 25, 2010, 01:25:57 AM »
Axies the Collector was by far my favorite character, outside of the main ones.  Though I really did enjoy Kaladin's mother, and I very much disliked his father..  I guess dislike is a strong word, I just felt he was too much of a stereotypical character, other than the fact that he stole the spheres.  I'm pretty convinced at one point Kaladin will be reunited, even if he doesn't want to be, with his parents.

Bad wording on my part  :(. What I meant to say is that he hasn't used his power yet, just seen the line spren. If he had used his power he would of gone to Shadesmar and that would've totally freaked him out and everyone would be talking about it for months.

Hahaha "everyone would be talking about it for months".  I think that the idea sounds right, that he might be in the early stages of Soulcasting.. but he has not succeeded because Shardplate, presumably, stops Soulcasting as well as Windrunner abilities.  I think that the "Soulcasting spren" add to Elhokar's paranoia, but I think someone really is interested in assassinating him.  I was going to say that may explain the broken gemstones in his plate, but like someone else mentioned, he or his servants would have noticed that when they geared him up for the hunt.

It seems that if he was the real cause for the breaking of his plate's gemstones, then Soulcasting affects gemstones BEFORE you enter Shadesmar, because he definitely would have said something about entering a crazy other dimension.  I feel it would be likely that, knowing Dalinar is also having visions, that he would suggest that they might be experiencing the same thing (even though they obviously wouldn't be.

Just my two cents.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: Spren and Hoid (spoilers)

I was confused to how he knew Odium (I assume that was Odium) at the end of the book.

I'm not sure if someone already answered this, but I don't think the person at the end with a Shardblade was Odium..  Since he died (the shardblade remained as he let it go), and he is supposed to be the primary antagonist on Roshar.  I also don't think it was Odium, because the man said he was "Talaenel'Elin, Stonesinew, Herald of the Almighty".  If you look at the beginning of the book, you'll see that Taln (possibly short for Talaenel'Elin, as Rosharians often shorten names) is the last Radiant remaining, the one that the others appear to abandon.

Hoid probably knows who Odium is, because he appears to be quite omnipresent.  Throughout Sanderson's other books, Hoid seems to be extremely well informed about anything.  There are many threads on this forum as to the speculation on who/what Hoid actually is, so I won't go into all the possibilities.

Hope this helps a bit :D

that makes sense, because the visions dont respond to him, so why should it refer to the highprinces?  it could also be refering to the lost order of the Radiants, that might be a bit of a stretch but it is possible

I was also thinking along the lines of the Radiants.. but I didn't really think of the shard itself being re-united.  It seems that would be the most efficient way to stop another shard.

The only connection that I can see between Mistborn and Inception is that Christopher Nolan would probably make an awesome MB movie.

 ;D

I think the best interpretation of Inception is that the whole film, from one end to the other, is a dream. The only "real" people are Cobb and Miles (his old teacher), and possibly Ariadne and Saito. The idea that's being incepted isn't the whole plot with the heir and the corporation, it's the idea that Cobb needs to accept his role in Mal's death, and then he needs to wake up and go home to his kids. It's only at the end that he finally abandons the dream, when he lets go of Mal's totem.

Remember, that top was never his totem, and he made it quite clear that A)a totem must never be handled by anyone else, and 2)a "tainted" totem can lie to you.

Hence, Mallory's spinning top has been lying to him the whole time, telling him he's awake when he's not. His guilt over her death has trapped him in a series of layered dreams where he can wallow in self-persecution. Miles provides him with Ariadne (named for the princess that helps lead Theseus out of the minotaur's labyrinth), who's particularly key to getting Cobb to recognize what he needs to in order to get himself out of his own personal hell.

I really like this.  Basically what you are saying is, it doesn't matter what the top did at the end of the movie, because it wasn't his totem to begin with.

I guess there is no specific chronology for Warbreaker?  I always imagined that it was the most "futuristic" of the 3 societies, but I'm not really sure why.
I'm pretty sure that as far as science goes, that would be Mistborn. The magic in Warbreaker is, however, used in more everyday applications than in Mistborn, where the magic is almost always used in warfare.

I don't know, I was just thinking that the societies themselves in Warbreaker seemed more advanced, again I have no real reason or idea why... Thats just how I felt haha.  It does make sense the way you said it though.

The only part of WoK I've read is the Prologue because it was in the back of Warbreaker.. I hate reading things in parts, so I've been holding out until the entire book is released :p

He is a leader. A year after being an informant to Kelsier, he goes to Terris (probably looking for the Well of Ascention), but when the Inquisitors come and take out the Keepers, he takes the Terrisman and hightales it to Luthadel.

I totally don't remember reading this, does it specifically say that Hoid was the leader?  Its late, and I sort of forget at this point, but now I'm curious :P
