Brandon Sanderson / Re: Have you guys read Mr. Sanderson's books?
« on: March 30, 2009, 02:10:53 AM »
Madjius, please read the forum FAQ, found here:http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?topic=11.0.

If you have something meaningful or interesting to add to discussions here, that's great. But no more resurrecting old threads and spamming the boards, please.

*blink*

That's where I live, and not just nearby!!!

Ok, where's my calendar... ;D

Small world.  I live in Roswell.  Hello, neighbor! :)

There are ways to say things that get your point across while still being respectful and polite. For example, back to the dictionary example, instead of saying "try using your dictionary more often!" you can say "I disagree with your use of "adultery" in that context. I'd define it as such and such, which doesn't affect such and such (filling in the relevant information where needed).

It's more the tone and presentation of the arguments I'm talking about--not the content.

19
To be clearer, statements like "Use your dictionary more often" or implying that where a person lives obviously negates their ability to understand something are what I'd consider hostile and rude (picking on those specifically because they're the most recent and I needed a quick example, not because I'm calling out the poster in question).

Mod hat on:

I would like to point out an important section from our FAQ:
http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?topic=11.0

FOURTH ITEM: Be polite.
I can't stress this enough. Being insensitive to others' opinions is a failing of both newcomers and long-time posters.  Try not to contribute to this atmosphere. It is good to have strong opinions, and it's even better to have opinions that are different from those of other posters.  The forum experience is about discussion and disagreement. However, you can disagree with someone without calling them names or otherwise insulting them. Be nice and respect people's differences.

Threads like this are bound to take twists and turns and get a little heated when they move from dealing with the specific topic (whether sex and sexuality are missing within the text of the Mistborn series) to more general (the role of sex and sexuality in our real life society--good, bad, moral, immoral, etc).

However, you can have a discussion or debate without name calling, without being condescending (from any viewpoint), and without being hostile.

If the thread continues to degenerate into bickering instead of debate I will have to lock the thread. I don't want to do that, as I like to see the board hopping with discussion and debate!  So, to recap, polite disagreements = good, hostile and rude comments directed at other posters = bad.  :P

Are discussions of Hell looked down upon, then?

If you are discussing the place, then no, Hell is not a swear word in that context, and the word would be permitted in such a discussion.  Since I think that's what you are actually asking. :)

Just wanted to let everyone know that I sent Brandon the file that Sarah compiled (thanks, Sarah!)  and he says to tell you that he's going to work on answering the questions. Also, he wanted me to thank you all for being so awesome. So,

Thanks for being awesome, everyone! Brandon really appreciates your support. :)

Is it time to remove "Includes Q&A w/ Brandon" from the title of this thread?  It's beginning to feel more and more misleading.

Then again, I'm still bitter that EUOL ignored all my excellent suggestions on page 46 of the Warbreaker thread.  (Hey, I THOUGHT he was still looking for feedback - that's what it said in the Warbreaker draft I read!)

I always seem to be just a little too late to get in on the promised author-fan interaction.    :(

If there are questions Brandon hasn't answered in some fashion or another in this thread (RAFO counts as a valid answer :P), feel free to send me a list of them, and I'll get them to Brandon. Sometimes it's easier for him to take a look at a single email full of questions than to wade through a long thread. I would do it myself, but my 2-month-old doesn't like to hang out in front of the computer as much as I do, and he makes typing difficult at the moment!  But if someone is willing to compile a list of questions he's missed seeing, I'll make sure it gets to him quickly.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn Jewelry (and Elantris as well)
« on: December 04, 2008, 04:58:51 AM »
Very cool. I'm excited to see them! The Elantris pendants are  beautiful.

I did notice that the link is broken from your main page at the moment. It tries to go to "misborn" instead of "mistborn."

Brandon Sanderson / MOVED: For Brandon - Religion (Potentially sensitive)
« on: November 20, 2008, 09:19:39 PM »
This topic has been moved to Rants and Stuff.
Since the thread's been resurrected, and the new stuff really has nothing to do with Brandon, I'm moving it to a more appropriate forum.

Everything Else / I'm back, and now I have two kids. :)
« on: October 23, 2008, 10:40:52 PM »
Well, Chris and I are now the proud parents of two adorable children.  I went into the hospital early Monday morning, and Jonas Timothy Kugler was born at 8:29 p.m. that evening (Oct. 20). He was 9 lbs. 15 oz. and 20 inches long. Big sister Brenna pronounced him "cute," but isn't so sure about the crying.

Spoiler post moved from a different thread:

Time and Again says:

I'm bringing this up, and I don't want to spoil anybody but I was reading the latest update to MB3 and I saw this. WARNING: SPOILERS!

"Vin burned Electrum. This created a cloud of images around her, shadows of possible things she could do in the future. Electrum, the Allomantic complement of gold. Elend had started calling it "poor man's atium." It wouldn't affect the battle much, other than to make her immune to atium, should the Inquisitor have any."

This is exactly what I was talking about, and I am absolutly giddy with joy that I called it. I know, I know, I'm hurting myself from pating my back so hard. I beleive I even said Poor Mans Atium. Hm.. how sweet it is. Now, back to my reading.

From Comatose (moved from a non-spoiler thread to this one):

Reaves....
You were right!
And it was Presrevation in the tent.
It's weird to think that our first theory was that Preservation was the mist spirit, but then we were distracted, and our original hunch proved to be correct.

Also from Comatose (Also moved from another thread):

I was sort of right about hemalurgy (YES!)  I got the examples wrong, but I did get the power and normal attribute stealing bit right, so that's awesome!  I told you guys the feruchemist/misting thing was correct when it first came up!
that's my I told you so.
I was wrong about the last two metals, but I did say metals absorb a God's power, which is kind of like the whole body of the gods thing.
