Movies and TV / Identity---Spoilers
« on: May 05, 2003, 01:40:12 PM »
Well, I saw it this weekend and while it was entertaining, it wasn't scary at all, which is disappointing.  I figured the whole "different personalities fighting" thing within the first ten minutes or so given the info that was given in the intro.  Didn't have the kid pegged as the killer though I though something was up when he tricked his mom onto the highway early in the movie.

Neat concept, lacklaster execution.

The funny thing is that the plot is very similar to the concept for "The Three" which is a joke script in the movie "Adaptation" that is meant to show how contrived a lot of Hollywood ideas are.  I just found that funny.

Video Games / Morrowind Performance (Help!)
« on: April 30, 2003, 09:35:28 PM »
Okay, just picked up Morrowind today and got totally sucked in.  Here's the problem:  Every five minutes or so while in the exterior world the game will hiccup and freeze for 3 seconds or so. Nothing major, but enough to be annoying.  My systems completely blows the sys reqs out of the water.

I've also fiddled with all the options.  No matter which resolution I pick, no matter which options I toggle, and no matter if I have the music on or off, the hiccup is there.

Any help?

Role-Playing Games / Savage Worlds
« on: April 26, 2003, 03:05:07 AM »
This game is everything I wanted and more.

Of course, I am a Pinnacle fanboy so you may want to note my heavy bias.

The game claims to be fast, furious, and fun with the ability to handle a wide variety of genres well for RPG and be a full miniature game system.

From extensive reading (not playing yet), it meets its claims.

I finally have a system that can handle my dream campaign now too!

Has anyone else picked it up yet?  What do you think?
There's free "Test Drive" rules on the Pinnacle site that show the basics of the system if you're wondering.

The anticipation for the months I waited for this was well deserved!

Role-Playing Games / Palladium Games
« on: April 16, 2003, 05:42:22 PM »
Biased review! Biased review!    ;D

A large group of my friends in undergrad started roleplaying with Rifts and absolutely loved Palladium games.  I had cut my teeth on AD&D and had never been introduced to any Palladium products until I had met them.

So I hopped into their rifts game and from that and playing occasionally throughout the years I've come to two conclusions:

1) Palladium has great settings.  A little cheesy at times, but anything that I disagree with can usually be easily removed.  There's a lot of wiggle room and a good combination of broad descriptions mixed with good detail.  I love the Rifts setting.

2) Palladium rules flat out suck.  This is one of the clunkiest rule sets ever made.  Combat looks like it would run great on paper, but it just takes forever...even with an experienced GM. It's sooooooooo slooooooooooooooooooow.   And sure, there are a ton of character classes and combos to pick at the start, but thats pretty near the last choice you'll make as what you get when you go up in level is fairly fixed.   And don't get me started on the ever increasing power levels in the supplements. There's a reason that Palladium games have a reputation of being a munchkin's dream.

The rules really need a drastic revision, but the Siembieda's are dead against it with a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it attitude.  And don't even think about putting rules conversion up on the web as their rule gestappo will shut you down.

Rifts setting with BESM rules would be awesome, though.

Still, I've never even looked at the fantasy setting.  I don't plan on picking it up either, but I am keeping my mind open.  If someone runs a good game of it for me then I will happily tell everyone I was wrong.

Role-Playing Games / Free Deadlands!
« on: April 04, 2003, 05:14:09 PM »
This is almost old news now, but seeing the Ars Magica post reminded me.  Much like Ars Magica, the player's handbook for Deadlands is a free download.  So go and check out how cool my favorite game is!

Role-Playing Games / A Classic D&D Adventure
« on: April 01, 2003, 05:29:19 PM »
I'm a fairly active member over at dragonsfoot.org, a 1E/Basic D&D fan that provides a lot of great free stuff and some fun message boards (just stay out of Edition Wars if you have think skin).

Anyway, I wrote an introductory adventure for OD&D a while back and the DF team were kind enough to make it presentable and make it a PDF.  It's strictly old school, so don't expect much of a plot or narrative, but it's a fun little adventure with some unique enemies (had to mix it up a bit).

It could easily be adapted to 3E if needed.  So go check it out and tell me what you think!

Given Entropy's new sig, I think a poll about his popularity is required by law.

Video Games / Zelda: The Wind Waker
« on: March 28, 2003, 02:47:15 PM »
I picked this up yesterday and all I can say is wow!  Gamecube may not have as many high quality games as the other platforms, but when a game is great on GC it is a whole 'nother caliber of greatness (re: Metroid).

I'll have more to tell as I play more, but right now I've got to get back to it...only a few more days of spring break left and a lot of Zelda to play!

Webcomics & Free Stuff / Doors and Windows
« on: March 20, 2003, 04:03:00 AM »
I don't know if you guys have checked this one out yet, but it's one of the few webcomics that truly entertain me.  Maybe I just have a hankerin' for all things dark and creepy.

I started reading this before I met the author, but since he was a friend of a friend I was introduced and I'm now playing in his Demon: The Fallen chronicle.

Good Stuff!

Role-Playing Games / Official Army of Darkness RPG!!
« on: March 14, 2003, 05:27:33 PM »
Listen up you primitive screwheads!

I heard that Eden Studios had scored another major lisence recently and today they ended the speculation:

The Army of Darkness RPG!

As if that didn't get my blood rushing fast enough, it's being penned by none other than Shane Lacy Hensley who probably tops the list as my favorite game designer (remember me, the Deadlands nut?).

This could be screwed up pretty easily, but Eden's games pretty much rock so I have a lot of faith in this. The Buffy RPG emulated the series nearly perfectly, we can only hope the same for AoD. And with Hensley at the helm...let me just say I'm pumped.

Yeah, I'm a gushing fanboy, but sometimes there's a time and a place for that. This is one of them.

Table-Top Games / Battletech anyone?
« on: February 17, 2003, 02:36:13 PM »
Just out of curiosity, are they any fan of Classic Battletech here?  I love the game myself and am surprised it hasn't come up before.  What do you guys think of the new product line?

CCGs / Why You Guys Stink
« on: January 29, 2003, 03:02:15 PM »
...because every new MTG article you post makes me want to play it...something I haven't done in four years or so.

Lately I've pretty much sworn off anything collectable anyway as I just can't fund it.  Maybe I'll dig out my Doomtown cards to try to satiate this renewed deckbuilding need.   ;D

Role-Playing Games / Little Keep
« on: January 14, 2003, 02:24:49 PM »
Another nice review, St. Ehlers...and one that once again invokes a response from me :)

Actually, I'd just like to add my two cents: the Hackmaster group I play in has been playing through LKotB for 3 months now and we've had an absolute blast doing it!  Combining this module with a great GM has really made this one of my best role playing experiences.

Even though we've spent a lot of time on the module, we're not terribly far in because our group tends to get into character and actually  roleplay a lot so we spend a lot of time yucking it up in town.

While the "adventure" here is a series of crawls, a few wilderness encounters, and a little plot behind a scam at the keep, this really is a mini campaign setting and deserves to be thought of as such.  It's also about as old school as it gets. :)

As far as buying all eight Hacklopedias, it's a common complaint, but an ill informed one.  First, you don't need all of the HoB because you can run adventures with the stats provided in the adventures. Sure, they're just stat blocks, but  they work.  You'll be limited to using the creatures there for your own adventures though.  Second, if you have any 1E or 2E monster products you can convert monsters over in about ten seconds.  Third, the only GMs who MUST buy the HoB are ones who are sanctioned (like mine) and are required to know the books inside and out.

Regardless, Kenzer has listened to its fans and is producing another HoB that has all the common creatures in one easy to use book, though I'm not sure when it will come out.  Also, they're producing a Hackmaster Light which remove some of the more esoteric parts of HM to speed things up (and attract the 1E diehards who hate skills, talents, quirks, and flaws).

Also, it's rumored Kenzer will be adding d20 stats to their adventures so they can be used with both HM and 3E.

Hackmaster has made it into my top 3 games of late.  This might be my favorite version of D&D yet.

Cheers!

Movies and TV / About Schmidt (no spoilers)
« on: January 13, 2003, 12:22:53 AM »
Saw this at a Sat. matinee with a friend and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Jack is superb, though his son in law to be steals a great many scenes.  Also got to see Kathy Bates nude which, of course, has been on my "to do" list for years now.    :P

We were the youngest people in the theatre by easily twenty years, which was funny in itself.  The audience laughed at several parts that we didn't, which solidifies that this was aimed at an older age group.

Recommended!
