Everything Else / Wish Me Luck!
« on: August 04, 2003, 04:39:24 PM »
Well, folks, tomorrow is the big day (well, and wednesday too).  National Boards.  I've spent the last six weeks as a virtual recluse with my head buried in a book so that I can actually pass these things.

Right now, I feel like everything I learned went in one ear and out the other.  I'm an optimist by nature, but I feel completely unprepared.   Thankfully (?), everyone esle I've talked to in my class feels the same way, so at leat I'm not alone.

Whew...okay...12 hours worth of testing in two days and then a fortnight of free time.

Wish me luck,  everyone.

Video Games / NWN TWG Party?
« on: August 04, 2003, 04:34:13 PM »
Well, NWN is finally at a price I agree with so I picked it up and overall am pretty impressed.  Lot's of potential here.  I've already downloaded some user made modules which have been more entertaining than the official campaign.  Dang, now I'll have to buy the expansion too...

And with Soul Caliber II just over the horizon...

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you still play and if you might want to meet for a game.  No DM, probably just stomp through a module, but I think it could be great fun.  Playing with folks you don't know through random servers just isn't that much fun...

Music / The Man In Black
« on: August 01, 2003, 05:53:17 PM »
Yeah, so I've been on a real Johnny Cash kick recently.  I've had his greatest hits for years, but I've never looked at much of his music past that.  Now I'm kicking myself for it.  Great, great stuff in his more obscure songs.

That said, I didn't know it was possible to mention swinging from the gallows in so many songs.

And they are all so good!

Movies and TV / Pirates:  Curse of the Black Pearl
« on: July 14, 2003, 04:53:32 AM »
I was lucky enough to see this a few days back and man was it a fun time!  The plot was trite and hackneyed, but the fun level is so high that you'll never notice it.  This is the most fun I've had at a movie for a long time.   Certainly not great cinema, but definitely worth seeing if you enjoy fun summer films.

Oh, and Johnny Depp was absolutely wonderful.  He stole the scene in every shot he was in.  I can't fathom the number of role playing characters that will be based on Jack Sparrow now.

Check it out here---

Doesn't sound like there are any big changes planned for a while since it seems the whole staff is making the move.  I wonder if the changes to Approved Play were in preparation for this merger?

Video Games / Worms: Armageddon
« on: June 12, 2003, 05:01:35 AM »
Yet another classic rediscovered.  Have you guys played this recently?  I've got to say that it holds up to the test of time better than any other game I own.  I'm re-addicted on the game and can't stop playing.

Best of all, wormNET is still operational.  Any of you guys want to get a game on sometime?

Table-Top Games / Arg! Crimson Skies (A Lament to Wizkids)

Wizkids!

Why, oh why, must you make such great games?

I've bought into it all...Mage Knight, Dungeons, Mechwarrior, Heroclix...only to put them down only because of lack of players and the collectibility of your games.  I still have more MK stuff than I know what to do with and still have my "Heroclix on a Budget" collection that I occasionally play with my friends.

And now, when I've put collectible games behind me, you release what I thought I could resist...a non collectible game.  Sigh.

I wasn't even tempted until I saw a random page advertising it and then went and downloaded the rules.  Sure enough, it looks to be a lot of fun.  Plus, it seems a lot cheaper to get into.

I mean, I owned the original, FASA version of the rules and loved it then.  I thought your rules couldn't top it.  I think I may be wrong.

Okay, I think I've proven to you, my TWG friends, that I am the weakest willed gamer on the planet.  Seriously.

Now I must find a way to afford this game and get everyone I know to play it...

Role-Playing Games / Ruins: Tomorrow Never Dies
« on: May 17, 2003, 04:51:16 AM »
Just wanted to pimp out my new campaign site.  It's a little spartan, but that's how I like my pages, I'm afraid. If you're interested in the setting check out the two handouts in the file section.  They're short.

I'll be running this, a campaign I've dreamed up for years, with Savage Worlds.  Over the years I've tried to run this game with a number of system (most recently 3E and Wheel of Time), but none of them have been able to capture the feel and flavor that I want.  They just didn't fit. I think Savage Worlds will be a perfect fit, but we'll see.

Anway, once things get underway, I may post a story hour here similar to Slant's.

Books / GW Black Library and Metaplot
« on: May 16, 2003, 02:45:33 PM »
I wondered about this since Entropy brought it up in another thread and I didn't want to hijack it.

Is GW advancing their metaplot?  Other than the introduction of new races, I thought that the main plot hadn't advanced for (real world) years now.  If so, I'm curious as to where they're going with it...and if someone will finally unplug the Emperor and let him die.  Death to the false Emperor!

Table-Top Games / You seen this, Fell?
« on: May 13, 2003, 03:44:32 AM »
I saw this and thought it might be right up your alley.  I've heard they take some time to put together, but they're great for building your own board...and cheap to boot!

Anyone else have a livejoural account?

I thought I'd plug mine for those who wish to keep tabs on me or peek inside my head.  Speak up and post your link if you also have one...

If it doesn't load, just keep trying it.  It's quirky like that.

Music / Concert Report 5/2/03
« on: May 09, 2003, 04:51:15 PM »
Last Friday I hiked across the width of Illinois to meet up with some friends to see a much anticipated Pete Yorn show in the Egyptian Room in Indianapolis.

I've got to say that Pete puts on a really good show...and somehow doesn't move his mouth when singing. He played virtually everything off both his first and just released second album with a good mixture of slow songs and upbeat ones.  The show wasn't sold out by any means, but there were a lot of people in there.  It was a nice venue and smoke free  ;D

Pete brought two opening acts with him.  Rooney and Grandaddy, neither of which I'd heard of before. Rooney took the stage first and was absolutely spectacular.  Best opening act I've seen.  Thier music is comparable to if Weezer had a baby with the Pixies and it was raised by The Four Seasons.  Quirky alternative with a lot of harmony.  I will buy their album without hesitation.

Grandaddy was second on stage and was a big, big downer.  They were just far too mellow for the crowd that was pumped up by Rooney.  They did not go over well.  However, after listening to the free sampler CD I got upon leaving the show I realized that I really like their stuff...I just wasn't in the mood for it. Their music is best described as  very haunting, mellow alt-synth.

All in all, well worth admission.  Best show since I saw Wilco at the Pageant here in St. Louis!

Books / Gaming Fiction
« on: May 05, 2003, 06:00:06 PM »
After spending my whole life avoiding gaming fiction in all forms (specifically AD&D game fiction...ehhh)  I finally broke down and read some Demon game fiction when a friend let me borrow "Lucifer's Shadow."   It's not bad.  Not great, either though.

Anyone else know of any gaming fiction that is actually worth the read?  The first one of you who even mentions Dragonlance is going to get a face full of pie, too. 'Dragons of the Summer Whatever' is the book that started my dislike for game fiction.  It might have been good when you're 12, but it doesn't age well.
