Brandon Sanderson / Elantris & Mistborn = <3
« on: July 29, 2006, 11:18:09 PM »
I remember reading Elantris when it was released.  I couldn't put it down, and I didn't know quite why.

After having so much time to consider it, I realized I loved the Elantris portion of the book.  It was an entirely new world to me, with new emotions.  I felt the story told within those walls was so real and so powerful that it outweighed anything I may have had issue with elsewise.  It's been awhile so I forget names and events and such, but much of the political part of the story seemed light and fluffy... that may have been due to the fact I'd just finished a politics-heavy-centric book...  At any rate, I finished it in record time and immediately shared it with a friend, who read it just as quickly and purchased her own copy telling me she was mad at me for making me like it so much and it being the only book published...

Anyway, I made haste to pick up Mistborn the other night (a short 2 mile bicycle ride at 10:30pm) and jump into it right away.  I find the magic system intriguing if not a bit unnerving to get used to during the 'action' sequences, but it's beautifully intricate to visualize.  I think the character progression is quite a bit more realistic as well.  Additionally, the editing process appears to have gone much smoother this time, as I have only found a couple "wait, what?" spots that I have to read over a second or third time to make sure I understood what was happening.

I'm currently at the beginning of chapter 14, and trying to read it in moderation as opposed to three late nights as I did Elantris.  I'd much rather spend three weeks reading it, and the wait for MB 2 be two weeks less...

Elantris is easily the book I value most of all the books I've read in the last several years, and it looks like Mistborn will slot right up there as well.

I'm interested.   ;D

Really any time is super because I don't have any other commitments for the time being - other than the NaNo thing in November.

I'm doing NaNo as well, I'm all excited like.

I've been doing some pre-NaNo work on another story, to try to get a decent amount of writing in per day.  So far I've failed each day to make the necessary average for NaNo, but I haven't actually tried to make it either..

Hopefully I'll be a winner. ^_^

My thoughts echo a lot of Domini's, but I have one huge one.

How is it that there is a world where everybody is jovial when they want to be - even enemies, or nearly backstabbing folk - and really, honestly, be in a joyful mood?

Considering the fact that death was not-so-far away for any of them, the supporting cast (all of them, nearly) were capable of instant happiness, not just the appearance of it.

Otherwise, it's the first book I've read this year that I'm putting on my absolutely positively must read suggestion list for my friends.  Just that one bit buggered me slightly.  I mean, it'd be a great world - I wish it were a reality - but I my suspension of disbelief kinda disappated each time something bad happened and they could each wisecrack at it.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Favorite Character in Elantris
« on: July 15, 2005, 07:10:38 PM »
um... I'm not sure if being on topic is allowed in these forums... but I'm gonna give it a shot anyways ^_~

My favorite "character" was Elantris, or to be more specific, New Elantris.  In all honesty, I'd have enjoyed it all the same had the plot merely focused on Elantris - of course taking over the other gangs would have had to be more difficult.

I suppose that's sort of cheating though, using the city itself as a character, but isn't it? In a sense, it was a living embodiment of the Dor!  It has the most personality, the biggest lost, and the most to gain by Raodon's research.  Not a single character other than Elantris itself had so much at stake in the novel.

I suppose I'm still cheating.  The people of Elantris, as a single entity, is what I'm really referring to.  I still think I'm allowed to refer to them and the city put together as Elantris, but if not I imagine the author will shortly inform me of my mistake. ^_~

I felt, personally, that the city was the single main character.  I felt that all the other characters were only secondary, the political drama a secondary plot to the single greatest struggle aside from good v. evil.

Nature v. Nurture.

As for religion.  Just because a religion teaches against another, or a group of people, doesn't mean the work of those men are worthless.  Think of the Bible (I imagine many of you do on a regular basis, being BYU folk), it says that all things are under His command, that all things will work together, by His hand, for good.

So just because certain people may consider themselves divine outside of one religious belief, doesn't mean their creations are immediately evil.  After all: "To the pure, all things are pure."

Site News / Re: Introduce yourself - right on!
« on: July 15, 2005, 06:49:16 PM »
allo allo!

Let's see, where to begin.  Ah yes...  My name is David, pay no mind to the alias, it's the least feminine one I use.

I found myself staring at Elantris with an odd expression on my face.  I didn't have money to buy it that day - so sad - but I did order it later.  I finally read it, and followed the linked roads to these forums.

I suppose as a Time Waster I could be one of the world's best.  I can waste time without even needing something to waste time with.  I suppose I'd be one of those 'strange' people in school that are always off in their own little world - but I'm not in school anymore.

I also play video games, though not nearly as much now as I did a few months ago.  I've gone to E3 the last two years with Warcry.com to write articles, which you can find in their 'archive' under the author name 'Tryna'.

I recently backed down a bit from the site since I am soon to move to Houston, TX from my present location of Orangevale, CA.  To fill the time, I started to read books, which I hadn't done with much consistency since I'd been in 6th grade.

Aside from reading, I spend some time writing.  I love to write; to create.  I have no finished novels, but I have a few 'in the cooker' so-to-speak.  One day I hope to finish, and sell, my creations.

I believe that's enough free info, the rest can be learned via AIM (in my profile, I believe).

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Elantris Typos!

I think this is a new one, I saw a couple earlier but forgot where they were - and since then they've all been found:

Oh, since I can't figure out how to necessarily hide these, I may as well mention this is quite a HUGE SPOILER

On page 330, about halfway down when discussing Shaor's men

"But Shaor's men had not come to fight.  That had come to give him a gift: the head of their former god."  (I can only imagine it ought to read 'They')

*whispers*  I'll do that introduction thing when I'm done reading this book. ^_~
