Movies and TV / DaVinci Code

So Ron Howard's adaptation of the book opened last night in New York and at the Cannes Film Festival--and the response has been quite negative, from what I've read.  At Cannes, people laughed in some serious parts, and no one applauded at the end--just hissing and catcalls.  Negative reviews from NY, as well.  Maybe it's just a case of critics disliking something that will appeal to the general public.  That's certainly the case with the book.  Still, I was surprised, particularly with all the talent making the film.

Writing Group / Fast YA Readers Wanted
« on: May 04, 2006, 06:06:21 PM »
Hi all.  I've just finished the second draft of a YA fantasy I want to send off to an agent--hopefully as early as the end of next week.  The only problem is that all my usual readers (EUOL, MsFish, CtrlZed among them) have already read it.  If anyone's interested, I'd love to have some fresh eyes--but time is really important to me right now.  It's about 50,000 words, and I've been told it's a fast read.  I've found some other readers, but I'd like more.  Any takers?

Movies and TV / JJ Abrams to helm next Star Trek Movie

Reported in Variety today.  The film's set to come out in fall 2008.  He'll also help write it.

Quote
Daily Variety said the action would center on the early days of "Star Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer-space mission.

Writing Group / BYU's Writing for Young Reader's Conference
« on: April 20, 2006, 09:37:08 PM »
I'm not sure where exactly to post this thread, so if the Powers that Be want to move it somewhere else, fine.  I'm just writing to give anyone who's interested a heads up about this conference.

Every summer, BYU has a writing conference aimed at writers of young adult and children's literature.  I attended last year, and it's really worth the while.  The biggest downside is the cost: $439.  However, for this money, you get a week's worth of writing workshopping with a professional author, contact with two major editors in the field and an agent.  If you live in the area, $439 really isn't all that much, seeing as how you'll have no travel or lodging costs.

Anyway, there are a few sections that might be of special interest to people on TWG.  Dave Wolverton is doing a section on science fiction and fantasy (though as of right now, there are only 2 spots left in his section), and there are also sections on mystery writing, beginning writing and general fiction.  (One on illustration, too--if that's your thing.)

The editors this year are Jill Davis from Bloomsbury and Tracy Gates from Viking.  The agent is Edward Necarsulmer IV from McIntosh and Otis.

You can also just register for the conference portion (no workshopping) for $109.

Anyway--if you're interested, check out the webpage or post here and I'll try to answer your questions.  I'm the assistant for the Sci-fi/Fantasy section this year.

Everything Else / Trade you a house for a paper clip
« on: April 17, 2006, 04:43:24 PM »
I just read about this on CNN and got a kick out of it.  We used to play a game like this my Freshman year of college. We called it "bigger and better."  I ended up getting a computer system for a toothpick.

(Sorry if there was a thread of this already--I couldn't find one, but I might have missed it.)

So I just got back from the film--the new one.  Took my wife and actually had a great time.  My advice would be to not compare Steve Martin to Peter Sellers.  If you do, you're only going to be disappointed.  But if you go looking for a lot of silly laughs, you'll have a good time.  The audience really sounded into it, and I thought Martin did an excellent job, really.  Anyone else see this yet?

Brandon Sanderson / Amazon's New "Message from Brandon Sanderson"
« on: February 10, 2006, 08:51:32 PM »
Anyone who bought Elantris from Amazon check out Amazon lately?  They've sent everyone who bought the book a message from EUOL--advertising Mistborn, his blog, and his profile.  You can also check it out if you look at Elantris on Amazon.  My mom told me about this this morning--she was surprised to see the note.  EOUL, did you have to kill someone to have this happen, or is it just one of the perks of Amazon?

Movies and TV / Harry Potter Casting News
« on: February 03, 2006, 02:09:41 AM »
Saw this over on Aint It Cool news.  Way too much info for me to type, so I'll just cut and paste.

Quote
BBC announced major casting news for the upcoming HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. Luna Lovegood, the dreamy Ravenclaw, will be played by an unknown, Evanna Lynch, who beat out 15,000 girls. You can see a picture of here!

Nymphadora Tonks, the shape-shifting witch, will be played by Natalia Tena.

Professor Umbridge, the incredibly evil Ministry teacher, will be played by Imelda Staunton, as has been rumored before.

Bellatrix Lestrange, one of Voldemort's Death Eaters and for those who read the books, has a much more sinister role, will be played by Helen McCrory.

Finally, the role of Mrs. Figg, Harry's next door neighbor, has been given to Kathryn Hunter. Does that mean the Dursley's are back for Harry Potter 5?

I don't know about you all, but I don't recognize a single name here.  I even went over to IMDB to check them out--drawing a complete blank.  Anyone have an opinion on these?  Know anything about them?

Just read that thing's are moving forward with this film--Andrew Adamson is set to direct again, and it's supposed to come out some time in 2007--likely December.  Judging by how well the first is doing (up to $271 million domestic alone vs a $180 million budget), all 7 of these puppies are going to probably get made unless some really drops the ball.  Count me happy.

Books / Newbery Awards Announced--Shannon Hale's Included!
« on: January 23, 2006, 01:22:13 PM »
Shannon Hale won a Newbery Honor this morning.  Very big news.  For those of you who don't know her, she's a local--got her BA at the U, then went to get her MFA at . . . Montana?  That's what I want to say, but it might be wrong.  Some place with an "M" name.  Anyway, she's written about 4 YA novels, I believe.  Goose Girl was her most well known one thus far, and it's the only one I've read as of yet, but I enjoyed it immensely.  Shannon comes to local cons, as well--she was at CONduit last year, and she's going to a writing conference at Westminster in the summer.  Check out her webpage here--I especially liked the blog entry for today.

Video Games / Tetris DS
« on: January 10, 2006, 07:19:56 PM »
So this is the first time I've heard about this game.  For those of you who don't want to read the link, I'll give you the basics.  March 20 of this year.  Wireless enabled.  Tetris.  DS.  That's the important stuff, although they're also adding some strange sort of Mario/Zelda/Metroid themed games to the mix.  I loved playing competitive Tetris back on my original Game Boy, and I'm pretty sure I'll be picking this game up if it's anything like I hope it will be.  Discuss.

Books / Patenting a Storyline
« on: November 11, 2005, 01:29:37 PM »
So I just finished reading this article

about this guy who seems to think he can patent a storyline along the lines of Rip Van Winkle.  It frankly made me nauseous just thinking about it, and I thought I'd share the sick feeling with all of you.  Tell me what you think of this.  I personally think he doesn't have a chance--and shouldn't--but I also am no patent expert.  So please, some expert tell me that this is frivolous, and I don't need to worry about it.  Thanks.

Video Games / More DS Wireless news
« on: October 18, 2005, 08:59:19 PM »
So Gamestop just reported that McDonalds has teamed up with Nintendo to provide wireless in over 6,000 MccieD's--free.  How interesting is that?
