I found several in Warbreaker, but I don't remember where now. Maybe I'll tell my husband (who's currently reading) to keep an eye out.

If I had seen the cover but never known anything about the book, I probably would have read it for the cover's sake alone. It's stunning and unexpected, and it makes me wonder what's going on. Why is her hair white? What's coming out of her mouth? Etc., etc. I just wish I knew, after reading the book, who it was.

Okay, some questions and issues that I've thought about now a few days after reading the book:

1. If Vasher took the extreme caution of advising priests to cut out God Kings' tongues to prevent them from using their Breaths, I found it a bit out of character for him to meet Susebron once, see that his tongue was healed and thus he controlled his own power, and give him even more power in the form of the D'Delir. I mean, I know why he did it. The part I don't get is why Vasher would just walk away from Hallandren afterwards, leaving Susebron to his immense power. I mean, yeah, Susebron's a good guy. But he's extremely innocent and thus extremely malleable. Who's to say he won't become corrupted by his power or swayed by someone corrupt?

2. If Denth is the same thing Vasher is, why does he apparently have only one Breath? Did he store his extras in an object and then feed on one per week to stay alive?

3. Who the heck is on the cover? I'd guess Siri, but the BioChromatic breath issuing from her mouth makes me think it's an Awakener and thus Vivenna. And the sword doesn't look like Nightblood, so maybe it's the sword Vivenna holds briefly? But by that time, she wasn't wearing dresses anymore, and she probably never wore anything like that dress in her life.

I'm overthinking it, right? :D

Yup, I was pretty sure for most of the book that Clod was Arsteel. Also, the moment I knew that a) gods can give their Breath to heal someone and b) Susebron had no tongue, I knew that Lightsong would die to heal Susebron at the moment when everything was going wrong. I was so pleased when it turned out that way.

I also guessed Denth was evil from the moment I found out he hated Vasher. Vasher didn't seem evil, just strange. If Vasher's not evil, then Denth must be.

I still really liked it. It took longer to pick up in pace than some of his other books, but I think the ending redeemed it.

Vivenna drove me crazy for most of the book, but then, so did Jane Austen's Emma, and I like that book in retrospect. At least they both grew up (Vivenna more than Emma).

Did anyone else notice that the couples have alliterative names (well, except for Blushweaver and Lightsong)? I had to laugh at that. Was that on purpose?

My little boy reached for the fire alarm on the way to the room where the panel was, and I thought, "What genius put fire alarms where young children can reach them?"

Ever since Elantris was published and I obtained my own copy thereof, I've wanted to go to a signing and meet Brandon (again) and get it autographed. Of course, I already have his autograph on my copy of TLE Issue 41, but that's not the same thing.

But every. single. time I hear about a signing, there's some reason why I can't go.

Last night, I found out that he was going to be at the Provo Library from 11 to 3. My husband had plans from about 1:00 on, but 11:00 we could do. So we packed up our kids and headed out, only to find out that the Borders employee was misinformed; Brandon was doing a 2-hour-long panel (great without kids, not so great with two under the age of 3), followed by a signing from 2 to 4. I almost (almost!) decided to stay anyway, but then my 3-year-old got hungry and tired and cranky a little after noon, and we had to go.

I thought about coming back alone, even with the two kids, but my one-year-old has been napping for most of the 2–4 time slot. Ah well. At least Brandon lives here and there will be other days.

Incidentally, the little boy who pulled the fire alarm today was part of the group we abandoned when we left early. Maybe it's just as well.  ;D

I did SEE you today, Brandon, but I will have to wait for the signed books. I'll get you next time, Sanderson, if it's the last thing I do.

(No, I'm really not at all creepy.)

Everything Else / Re: Public School Writing Teachers
« on: January 04, 2009, 05:58:19 AM »
The problem is that 98% of students will not grow up to write novels. They will, however, need to know how to write letters, how to create a resume, and quite possibly how to communicate through writing to other people within their business. So persuasive and expository writing takes priority when you have very little time to teach everything anyway. Most high schools do offer creative writing classes that are separate from your standard English classes, which is great. I'm not sure if mine did.

That said, I agree with 42 that too much emphasis is placed on literature in public school English classrooms. I too majored in English teaching (but didn't student teach because I realized I sucked at the actual teaching part). I found that most of my classmates had chosen the major because they wanted to share their love of reading with their students. Well, okay, great, but what kids really need is to know how to think, write, and communicate in the real world.

I really wanted Jerick to get together with the Princess.  *sigh*

You did? Did you read the same book I did?

Brandon Sanderson / Mistborn 2 Editorial Review

I'm surprised there isn't a thread about this already, but when I went to Amazon's page for The Well of Ascension, I noticed there was an editorial review for it. It sounds pretty positive, even if it isn't terribly long.

I got the impression that Kelsier kept a positive, funny attitude throughout the book not so much because he was an optimist as he was hiding his rage behind humor.

Summer Glau as Vin, I'm telling you. Anybody write screenplays?

This is unrelated to the book itself, but did the color of the red foil on the cover bother anyone else? The rest of the cover is so pretty.

Whoa. Whoa, whoa, whoa.

I just finished a few hours ago, and that's about all that is running through my mind.

Thoughts:

1) This needs to become a movie, soon, and Summer Glau needs to play Vin.

2) I totally guessed that the Lord Ruler was the Terrisman guy about 2/3 of the way through. I wasn't sure I was right, but everything fit. I felt so awesome when the big reveal happened. :) I even guessed that Feruchemy had something to do with how he was living so long, but I didn't put together the Allomancy part.

3) Capitalizing Push and Pull was a bit disorienting sometimes, but I guess I got used to it.

4) Marsh as an Inquisitor =  ;D 8) ;D

Once again, an awesome magic system and an awesome plot. Two thumbs way up.

Edit: When will the sequel be out?
