Role-Playing Games / Re: GURPS: Good for Gaming?

GURPS takes the handcuffs off the GM giving them a chance to create new and original worlds without players crying "but DM the rules say you need to run the world like this" GURPS is filled with options not limitations.

Demon Magic
A mage casts spells by summoning a demon to do what he designed the spell to make it do.  The focus is not of what it does, but the cost.  In exchange for the task, the demon is given freedoms depending on the power, difficulty, type and scale of the spell.  This makes every spell a risk.  Is it worth it to cast a spell to lift boxes when the demon who does the heavy lifting will go on to smash up a good chunk of your warehouse?  There is also the possibility that the spell is simply not enough to contain certain demons who can only come through the most demanding of spells.  Summon a mind controlling demon to turn the enemy army on itself?  You might end up with it ruling your country since a demon with power on such a scale is both clever and strong enough to escape the bonds of nothing short of the most skilled sorcerer.  This makes the user look for alternative solutions to their problems that either don't require magic or allow them to summon low power demons.  Instead of an epic level mind control demon you could summon a demon who simply looks like he could wipe the army in one go and make them break ranks through sheer intimidation.  Resourcefulness is key.

The last system is the one I'm most interested in, but I think the others have a lot of potential.  My big issue is classifying exactly what they do. ::)
Demon systems do humble the casters because of their reliant s on a outside and unpredictable source for their power. The Al-Qadim Ginnie system used the same type of mechanic. In the book Master of the Five Magics there was a great mechanic involving demon summoning, every time you summoned a demon there is a battle of wills the stronger the demon the harder it is to beat them and each time you summon the same demon that demon has a better chance to beat you the next time he is summoned. This keeps the caster from pulling out the big guns every time and even a week faithful demon will eventually become unreliable. If a battle of wills is lost the demon can do as they please.

@Seaoftrouble: a well aimed Duralumin push can get you pretty far
Make sure you bring some metal to throw in front of you for the landing  :o and make sure you drink down some more steel before you try.  Wait better Idea duralumin with pewter for the landing that would be sweet  8) and not require the consumption of steel before you land.

Well can you flap your arms harder than wind....b/c it's not free you aren't going to generate enough force to fight 20mph winds. You can only go where the wind blows.
I was going to mention that wind would be a factor but figured why bother it's to obvious to bring up  ;)

Gliders and hang gliders get around very well so with some practice and a good altitude you could probably do OK.

I don't think the belongings of a Feruchemist are affected by weight reduction so it's a good thing they can store warmth to use when they fly in the winter wearing only a loincloth :-* .

You can fly using Feruchemy by reducing your weight to zero and flapping your arms. Assuming you've strapped on wings.
If thats true then you would not be limited to were you could fly or your altitude like you are with Allomancy, because your not dependent on having metal to pull and push on. Feruchemy would offer a free  :D and untethered experience. Allomancy with an ample amount of metal to push and pull from would have a easy time with speed and maneuverability  ;D but great altitudes  >:( would still be hard to come by. Water crossings are probably out of the question for Allomancy unless the water does not reach depths of real consequence, then you might be able to pull off some sort of wacky Vin horse shoe maneuver.

I think that Atium doesn't actually store age, it stores youth, which is why when Vin found TLR in his hideout he was old.  He was storing youth.  It's part of his Feruchemy/Allomancy trick to make himself immortal.  So the change in age is one way, storing makes you older, tapping makes you younger.  This is why most Feruchemists don't really use Atium much, since to make yourself younger for a year you'd have to older for a year, thus making it not very useful except for maybe changing your appearance.
So in order to make yourself a small child (if it's even possible), you'd have to be an especially decrepit old man for just as long.
Honestly I like to think it does not affect development though I have been told otherwise but I am still skeptical.

Also it's not an even exchange rate so being 5 years older for a year will not get you a full year looking 5 years younger.

He definitely reminded me of Rand, but then again, I discovered Brandon's work because he's finishing WoT so I might be a little biased.
That's how I came across Brandon's books as well.I know it's not Rand but Knowing Brandon is not only a fan of the WOT but one of the authors as well my mind just could not help but go there for a moment when Ruin was described.

Hm. At least some trickery could still be possible with youth-storing though. Say I develop my Feruchemy at age 20, and live to be 80 naturally. But say as soon as I learn that Feruchemy, I store youth heavily, making me appear 80 years old, right at the limit of my natural life. I can keep storing and storing that until I actually am 80; then I have to start calling in the reserves to keep living. That lets me live quite a ways past 80, maybe even to 140. The sacrifice is high though; I spend my entire life being extremely aged. A lesser sacrifice could get 10 or 20 more years though, which surely would appeal to some, especially scholars.
I was thinking about this formula as well

:) Is it just me or did it seem the description of Ruin was a tip of the hat to Rand ?

1. I am sure most of us can picture a Mistborn taking down a Feruchemist (with a decent energy reserve) if we were put in the Mistborn's shoes.

2. I am sure most of us can picture  a Feruchemist (with a decent energy reserve) taking down a Mistborn if we were put in the Feruchemist's shoes.

3. If this was a game I know plenty of players who would win 90% or more of the time against most players regardless of the shoes they happen to be wearing at any given time.

4. If Kelsier (Vin if you prefer) was a Feruchemist instead of an Allomancer I still don't think any Mistborn or Feruchemist would escape him if he chose them as his next victim.

They don't have to go any faster than this

"I don't know," Marsh said, his voice coming out in a growl.
With a flash of power, Sazed released his ironmind and instead tapped steel,
increasing his speed again. He dropped the lamp, ducking to the side, moving more
quickly than Marsh could track

True he did burn up his reserves soon after this but the reserves in question were never meant for battle

I assume that if the difference was insignificant, then Sazed wouldn't have bothered bringing it up.  If you asked him, "Hey, will you be here in an hour?" he would probably not contradict you if he thought that he'd actually show up a few seconds after an hour.

I'm also drawing conclusions based how quickly Sazed used up his metalminds during the siege of Luthandel.  If it was proportional (or even anywhere close to proportional),  and he had a year of strength stored up, then even running at 256 times normal strength would give him nearly three days of power.

I was just crying for solid numbers, and I figured to my shame that wording my reply that way would result in some quotes I might have missed being thrown my way.
