Brandon Sanderson / Re: Brandon Sanderson Recommends?
« on: June 06, 2010, 12:41:18 AM »
Pretty sure he has a list on the... Barnes and Nobles Q&A? Let me look it up.....

Authors: "Right now, Pratchett is my favorite living author.  Jordan was my favorite for a long, long time.  I'd add the original three ladies--McCaffrey, Rawn, and Hambly--to that as well, as they were the ones to get me into this genre."

EDIT-
More specifically:

Quote
My question 3: Which is your favorite Pratchett novel and why?

The Truth is my favorite.  As a writer, and one who likes to explore the nature of the truth in his works, a novel that deals with someone trying to publish a newspaper in a fantasy world mixed philosophy and laughs in the way only Pratchett can.  However, Guards Guards the book where I suggest people new to Pratchett start.  (I suggest avoiding the Colour of Magic as your first experience, even though it's technically the first book in the series.  They are all stand alone novels, really, and Guards Guards can be seen as the beginning of the best sub-series within the series.)

Because it's semi-related...

Your favorite movies?

Gattica.  The Fifth Element, actually, is up there too.  The Prisoner of Azkaban movie.  Empire Strikes Back.  Sneakers.  Jacky Chan's Operation Condor. (I know, I know.) The Emperor's New Groove.  Star Trek: First Contact.

To be honest, that's probably not a great list.  Those are the movies I watch over and over, but there are a lot of movies I love, but have only seen a few times.  I'm not generally a 'watch it over again' type of guy, so it's hard to pick favorites.  I come back to the genre films or things like Jacky Chan because they're quirky and rewatchable, but that doesn't actually mean they're my favorite--or that they've influenced me as much as other films.  For instance, Laurence of Arabia blew my mind, and The Sting influenced how I write quite a bit.  But I've only ever seen those films once.  But I do keep coming back to Gattica as one of the movies I think does what storytelling should do, when done perfectly right.

Your favorite music?

Depends on the month.  Right now?  Daft Punk.  Before that?  Anything by Harry Gregson Williams. (Often, his music is better than the film it is in.)  Metallica has been a long-standing favorite of mine, though I've been listening to a lot of Desprez lately.

Did anyone else know that while our favorite author wasn't writing books he was playing tennis in Frankfort,  Kentucky?

Maybe Adonalsium isn't a person. Maybe it's some super-powerful object with cognitive presence (Sort of like a super-souped up Nightblood). Or maybe without cognitive presence.

2 interacted with directly- Endowment, Pool
1 Seen power, not met- Dor/Jaddeth
1 seen influence, not met- Austre (there are a number of 3rd person promptings in Warbreaker) Or, it could be Hoid and whatever    shard he's with(Restoration?).

I agree with Vortx. It was up online to the public, so you're okay. You didn't know any better.  ;) As long as you promise to not do it again.

Draft Vow:
I, [Insert name here], promise here after this wonderful [day of month] of [insert month], to only read books that have been printed, annotations, and deleted scenes/preview chapters. I promise to not be a part of Brandon's pre-publish editing and therefore shall not bestow the name of Alpha upon myself.

Just to be clear, this means no BYU-thesis Dragonsteel, no full Scribbler, and no Way of Kings editing. Sorry Peter, that means you can't be an Omega  ;)  I also think that if you read preview Liar or Scribbler, you're fine, as long as you don't do it again.

I agree with Fireborn. If it is available to the general public, then it is Omega-approved.

That's it. I say that we should make an Anti-Alpha club, for those dedicated members that only know what's been published. We should call ourselves... The Omegas!!

What do you think?

Rants and Stuff / Re: Computer Trouble
« on: May 18, 2010, 01:18:24 PM »
Thank you all very much, this was very helpful, and my PC is up and running. I used the www.2-spyware.com/remove-data-protection to get rid of most of the virus, then I downloaded Lavasoft's Ad-aware program and used that to clean up the remnants.

Thanks again!

Would it be safe to put My Documents on a flash drive?

I figured that some of you are computer savy, so I figure I'll ask here.

My computer (Windows XP SP2) has been infected by a virus called Data Protector that tells me that my computer is infected and that I need to buy the full version to get rid of the viruses.

Now I used Task Manager to end process dataprot.exe, but it kept starting up. I discovered that a program called iexplorer.exe ( I use chrome so I know that's not right) that kept starting up the program. However, iexplorer.exe keeps starting up. I tried to delete the Data Protector files in the Program Files area, but it won't let me delete the .dll files because 'they are currently in use'.

I use Windows Defender, and it noticed the file, but it didn't do anything about it. (It told me it was going to show Microsoft what it was, because Defender was unsure what it is)

According to research, this file (Data Protector) is a virut, which attaches to exe files and corrupts files. Apparently the only solution is to clean the disk and reinstall windows. Is this really the only solution? And would it be safe to transfer My Documents to a flash drive, and then to my iMac (10.6.3)? I would dislike losing my files on there, but I will if I need to.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mistborn Allomantic Art Prints
« on: May 13, 2010, 10:28:15 PM »
The posters we heard might be made are:
Hemalurgy
Feurchemy
Lerasium-alloys (Allomancy)
Atium-alloys (Allomancy)

But I'm  pretty sure the next one will be Furchemy since that sounds like it will be fairly wide-spred in the second series.

They should've just taken some fan art and used that instead!

Sorry Tegal. It's true that when we actually see Kelsier it's Ruin, but it's Kelsier who tells Spook to send the message.
From the spoiler tag of HoA Annotations 64:
Quote
"You did well, Spook."

Yes, that's Kelsier's voice at the beginning. As I said in a previous annotation, he can't help but meddle.

There is an afterlife in this cosmology I've built, and Kelsier's in it. He never has been able to leave well enough alone. He saw, here, that a piece of the puzzle needed to be put together, so he stepped in and tried to get through to Spook about it.

Spook was the only one in the crew he could speak to. That's because Spook truly has faith in Kelsier as a deity—which, for these few weeks between Preservation's death and the coming of the Hero of Ages, Kelsier is.
