Movies and TV / Re: Alice in Wonderland ::Maybe Spoilers::

When you say mindless... Well, that's a bit of the point to the Alice in Wonderland story, isn't it?  I don't know, perhaps I'm just trying to justify the fact I liked the movie...  But the ending did lack something for me.

I thought it was the stupid dance, personally.

And I don't think they 'mindlessly' fought.  They're fighting for the crown to be liberated from an usurping, tyrannous queen.

I went with a friend, and we both wore lame costumes for fun.  I looked more like Dorothy in Wizard of Oz than Alice, however.

Aside from that, I found it a fun movie.  The heads floating in the moat were a nice, Burton-esque touch, I think.  I agree, it fit with the traditional story, and I felt like it kind of completed the story.  We never DID find out how Alice got to be in Wonderland in the first place; what made her so special?  How did she end up in Wonderland/Underland when no other children did?

And I like Johnny Depp as the Hatter... the dance at the end was a bit pointless, but I think he did a pretty good job at his character.  And the quote about the best people being mad... I liked that.

Ah, but it isn't dual time.  One of the wonderful things about vampires is that they can live a long time isn't it?   ;)

Razorblade, from Blue October.

I love how intense their songs are!  "The End" creeps me out a bit, but they have a few really cute ones...  And some really creepy ones...

Certainly a lot of good feedback there, especially the bit about the timing issues...  The characters from the prologue actually pop back into the story chapter two, but maybe I could insert that before Ray's?  But yes, I like the idea you have with using Gail's arrest as the catalyst for the scene.

Sorry, I meant the date.  Today's fine?

I thought it was very exciting.   ;D

There were a few typos/misspellings, but those are easily corrected.  Anaiah seems strong in this chapter... I like the tension when she finds out she has to fight the ENTIRE caste, and ends up about to win - and then she's ambushed when it seems she's about to win.  Good job for this chapter.

I did not see that ending either.  Overall, the pacing seems to be pretty good, and I like the conflict in this chapter.

(Your setting is amazing, by the way.)

Reading Excuses / Re: Stealing Plots from Other Genres
« on: April 03, 2010, 11:58:38 PM »
There are so many plotlines - the boiled down plotlines - that have been reused over and over again.  If you think about it, a lot of d authors will do it... but they'll twist it somehow.  Hamlet?  Change a few details, give it a happy ending and turn all the main characters into lions, and it's the Lion King.  Or some people might take many elements from different stories and combine it into some mutant plot/characters/setting thing.

My first attempt at a book was basically Harry Potter/Garth Nix's Tower series/Wrinkle in Time at a girl's school.  I couldn't make it work the way I wanted it to.  My second book jumped into my head, after creating some characters.  Another I got after reading Twilight and getting the new White Stripes CD, and somehow getting this weird dream.

Basically, if something from your story's completely yours, whether it be the characters or plot, it's okay.  If you come up with one thing completely your own and let the story come naturally from that element, that works best for me.  If you intentionally draw something of another author to be the start of your plot... I think it's harder to come up with a good, original story.  If you can make it work, good for you.  Just don't be too obvious about the stealing... Or steal something nobody else has ever heard of.  ;D

Dan Wells / Re: I am not a Serial Killer BANNED!!!

It really depends on a lot of things, I guess... actors, director, changes to the stories...
Maybe I WOULD like to see it.  It depends.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Thank you Mr. Sanderson

Well, I'm only on Lord of Chaos, but I've heard that Gathering Storm is the best book in the series.  Whether this is Jordan's plot or Brandon's style, I'm not sure, but I'm trying to get through the series as fast as possible.

I'm so excited for this book.  I'm one of those people who love horror/psychological thrillers (I read Roadwork, but I find more enjoyment in King's more supernatural stories; just the way my taste runs), but the horror movies have me constantly "getting a snack" in the kitchen.  Which is why you'll never find me at a horror film in theaters.

So.  I will love the book... but have to be dragged to the movie.  There will be a movie, correct?  There better be...

I thought it was a very interesting beginning... I have to agree with previous comments about the rape, but there's a situation and a large potential for a really good plot here.  This might be just me, but maybe there was a bit of an imbalance with exposition and dialogue.  However, the dialogue took place solely in the Spirit World, so that indicates most of the action will occur there.  But there isn't any important input from me, I'm afraid.  This is something worth going into.
