Brandon Sanderson / Re: [WIP] The Cosmere

I added a little general knowledge about some of the worlds and changed the format a little. I am not sure I like how things are starting to look though - forums seem to offer very little formatting options. Maybe I should maintain a Wiki page instead?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: A few questions regarding Mistborn
« on: February 17, 2011, 07:36:19 AM »
I know this is a month old, but I happened to be rereading the books, and happened to see the answers to one of your questions in there - it was a pretty unique question, so I had remembered it.

1. Venture, Hasting, Elariel, Tekiel, Lekal, Erikeller, Erikell, Haught, Urbain and Buvidas (Mistborn I paperback, p. 180)

2. If there is information about this one, I don't remember seeing it. I think the only export mentioned in the books is weapons, and I don't know if House Elariel was associated with it.

3. On this one I am certain there is no information. I know nobles got to see him very rarely, as he felt balls and parties were beneath him. The most they saw from him was during the public executions. Obligators and Ministry officials got to talk to him more frequently - as inferred from the conversation between him, the Inquisitor Kar, and Vin's father.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Nature of Shardblades? (Spoilers)

Dawnshards don't have to be weapons - they could be just a key component. For example, every Shardblade uses a Dawnshard in its core, and that's what gives it its magical properties. It's probably not like that, but I think the example holds.

And that trader from Shin was Vstim, as seen in Interlude 4: Rysn. I can't remember anything that clearly and unquestionably indicated that Szeth was employed by the Parshendi. Yes, it is possible - and I find it likely too (assuming Brandon doesn't pull something weird off... which he might very well do) - but it's not certain. One of the easiest ways to deceive a reader is to have a knowledgeable character express certainty about some event, only to have themselves proven wrong later on.

What bothers me more is why Shallan killed her father. I believe the Blade was his before the assassination/murder, since some of Shallan's memories mention blood in the room - which would not have been present if she killed him with the Blade. So, the way I see it, she killed the good old Davar the old fashioned way, took his Blade, and then kept the Blade in secret from her brothers. The part that confuses me is that Shallan doesn't seem the type to do anything like that - kill her father for personal gain, and then hide such an essential thing from her brothers. She seems genuine. And not exactly happy the murder.

So, yea...

I am not sure if the pool spoke as much as it conveyed emotions. But it may be that Endowment is also dead, it's a theory I haven't given much thought to.

Didn't Lightsong hear a voice when he was remembering his death just before he healed Susebron? I am absolutely certain there was a godlike voice in the Graphic Audio book, but they are known to have a few things off.

I suspect Kaladin and Szeth belong to different orders. Many of Kaladin's chapters have the Vev on the chapter headings, and she is the Herald associated with healing. And aspect Kaladin can easily be related to.

In addition to that, one of Dalinar visions has a female Knight Radiant fall from the sky and heal his wounds with a power she refers to as Regrowth. Ignoring the possibility that the Knights could just fly, I think it is very likely that she was a Windrunner as well - to me, at least, it seems like a nice use of the power. Lash yourself in the direction you wish to fly into, play with your weight to adjust the speed, and so on.

So I'd imagine Kaladin's order is also the one that female Knight belonged to. And knowing Szeth's character, he is unlikely to be a part of it - somehow I don't see him be a 'healing' kind of guy. He is not evil, or cruel, or anything like that - but healing just doesn't seem to be his thing.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Experiencing Sanderson through Audiobooks

Aww, that's a bummer. I was looking forward to either one. Does this mean we won't see any other GA Sanderson books?

Hey, Corey in San Diego! :P

I am glad you enjoyed the audio books, and I am certain many of the forum visitors here also do. However nothing matches what Graphic Audio has done with Elantris and Warbreaker. Both are beyond majestic, and I wholeheartedly wish they would do Mistborn* and the Stormlight Archive. While they are quite pricy (~$70 for each one), they are also quite worth it. If you can't afford them, give the sample previews a shot. You can find them on each individual CD's page (not on the box pages I've linked).

Of course, welcome to the forums too! And try not to double-post topics :)

*Weren't there rumors about GA doing Mistborn? Or am I thinking about the movie rights?

Reading this makes me think... 'They changed, even as we fought them. Like shadows they were, that can transform as the flame dances.' Assuming this is really referring to the Voidbringers, and assuming the Voidbringers really are the Parshendi, we haven't seen a single indication that they can change forms, especially in a swift manner. Maybe they can grow their chitin-like armor at will, but it doesn't seem like that is a fast process.

Could this be an argument against the claim that the two are the same? Or maybe the Voidbringers aren't as human-like as Jasnah likes to think. Maybe the Parshendi are the Voidbringers, but somehow inhibited, weakened.

Going back to one of the questions regarding the font... We know you have it and don't plan on releasing it, but how do you feel about a fan-made version? It will likely use scanned images with slight modifications to look better.

This is a very nice table you've got there. Sorry for being a little slow maintaining and updating this thread, but life's been busy lately. One day I will have my compendium complete :)

I remember reading this epigraph and thinking that maybe the Shardblades have a Voidbringer bound/imprisoned inside them. I know I am clinging to my Blade-Voidbringer theory a little too much, but the burning of the victims' eyes makes me think of those hellish creatures.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: When does Alloy of Law get released?
« on: January 26, 2011, 12:35:52 AM »
The Master likes to publish one book every year. Sometimes it's one of his side projects - like the Allow of Law; sometimes it's one of the grander epics, like The Way of Kings. The end of this blog post has an outline of what Brandon plans to write in the (distant) future, as well as when we should expect to see each particular work.

Rather ambitious plan, I daresay. But I had to trust one author to do it, it would be Brandon.
