Brandon Sanderson / Re: Brandon Stereotype Character Relationships
« on: August 08, 2009, 09:51:29 AM »
This is possibly just Brandon "writing what he knows", which makes for far more believable relationships in the first place.

Also, most of Brandon's women outside of the supporting cast are very strong, (which is a good thing) so it's more of a "Brandon keeps picking bookish heroes" issue. Given that WoK seems to have a soldier as the main protagonist you might get to look for new stereotypes soon. ;)

I would argue that sci-fi has been using various magical travelling-to-other-worlds systems for years.

Here's a hint:  Real science hasn't got a clue how we could really do it safely, especially not faster-than-light.

Right, soft sci-fi is essentially fantasy, but I can imagine several things you could do with magical space travel with much better suspension of disbelief than scifi space travel. Also, travelling to different worlds in fantasy has traditionally had VERY different implications than doing so in science fiction. Partially because it tends to focus on travel to alternate dimensions.

I think travelling worlds with magic is probably one of those ideas whose time has come. I've had that on my list of "loose ideas" for... I think six years? Almost as long as I've had the list. It's certainly not new, but it's waiting for someone to make a really good book involving it in a way that's fun and exciting. Which is a matter of inventing a cool space travel system.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Hoid??
« on: July 23, 2009, 05:32:53 AM »
Yeah. I hadn't heard that it would be the last set in the shardworlds, but that makes sense. As far as I know, Hoid's story is in Dragonsteel, but that may have changed since supposedly Brandon took bits of Dragonsteel and put them into Way of Kings. That being said, I think it more likely that Hoid will just make appearances in WoK and will be a main-ish character in Dragonsteel.

I somehow suspect that he hasn't cannabalised Hoid into WoK. That is, beyond his usual cameo deal.

And yes, that is the real American cover. Good thing New Zealand gets the UK edition. ;)

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Feruchemical Combat Techniques.
« on: July 19, 2009, 11:31:43 PM »
I keep thinking there would be secret government sponsored breeding programs between mistings and feruchemists. the result being the ultimate pewter warrior. hehe

Building on that you could breed mistings together based on which power they have, creating a line with strong attachment t0 tin or whatever.

Or one could go the other way... the Xmen way and have registered mistborn and mistings as well as feruchemists with only bronze, aluminum, and chromium burners accepted in normal society. The others hunted and feared because of their superhuman powers. The nobles oppressed by the skaa. Mehehehehehehhe

You could almost take it in a GATTACA direction as well, in the third trilogy planned. DNA testing, borrowed ladders, copperclouds, secret allomancy, feruchemy, and removable hemalurgic spikes. Possession alone costing you 20 years.

Fun to think about in any case.

I recall some blog posts or interview responses suggesting that Brandon is thinking along these lines for the next time he visits Scadrial.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Table of Allomantic Metals *Spoilers*
« on: July 17, 2009, 07:16:20 PM »
About the youth/age thing. If you can store 'age' you'd just need to always store it and you could be perpetually young, while if you store 'youth' In order to achieve immortality you'd have to have allomancy/feruchemy. So the way I see it, the lord ruler stored youth.

Right, I'm just saying that this seems to be inconsistent with the other powers, where you don't get two metals that store opposite types of the same property. :)

Oh, I'm blind, I see where you put them now. Which categories match up with which colours, and can you expand on what you mean by some of the adjectives? What makes a feruchemical power static or dynamic? :)

Having seperate metals to store "youth" and "age" seems a bit weird seeing other metals function such that you gain one quality by storing and the other by tapping. Surely any feruchemical ability to modify your age would work the same way- meaning you are likely missing a feruchemical ability in your projected chart. :)

edit: Also, what distinguishes virility from the ability to store health? Aren't the two referring to subtly different parts of the same concept?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Warbreaker
« on: July 17, 2009, 12:10:05 AM »
EUOL stated in his blog that he is worried about the sales of his forthcoming book Warbreaker and I was just curious to see who has read it and if you are going to buy it anyway.

I read it online and loved it so I plan on buying it and rereading the finished product.

Not only did I read an early draft online, (I'm reading the final now while I wait for it to release here) it also turned me onto Brandon's other books, and eventually WoT. So I'd say he did pretty well out of Warbreaker in my case ;)

What are the actual patterns you've noticed, and for which metals did you have to "guess" the symmetry? The charts look nice but I don't see what they're actually supposed to represent. edit: I don't think I see the categories in the original post in the other thread either?

Nah, he's just deluded himself into believing he's too lazy for that because he was so disillusioned by the decadence of all the other Returned. ;)

I would like a twitter account for Spook before he learned to talk right. But that's just my opinion

Now that would be interesting.

...But Lightsong first :P

I propose a compromise: Lightsong speaking like spook! ;)
