I play it all the time. If you like micromanaging your troops in RTS's, you should like it. The really cool thing about it is that they did an excellent job balancing all the heroes, so that there isn't one hero that absolutely dominates all of the others.

Good lord, I can't wait for this game to come out. I'm not sure if I'm more excited about this or Starcraft II, but I wouldn't want to live on the difference. Now we just need Warcraft IV...

So, apparently you were right the first time. Adminworks was installed on my computer, but it was part of another program, which is why I didn't find it right away. Apparently it was part of a program that my brother installed on my computer this last summer. We were trying to figure out a way to increase my fan speed, because my processor runs hotter than normal. I have no idea why it decided to wait until now to disable my drives, because it claimed that the last time it was modified was way back in March. So, I uninstalled that, and now my drives are working again. Anyway, thanks a lot Sprig, I really appreciate the help.

Ok, so I figured out that I have awserv.exe running in the background, but I don't remember installing adminworks, I can't find it on my hard drive, and windows doesn't bring it up in the programs list, so I would guess that it's another program/virus doing the same thing. I have run avast, avg, ad-aware, and spybot at this point, and they found a lot of malware, but not the right one, apparently.

As for the other...
When I went to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer I found a "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" value. Should I delete that?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
For this, I found a "policies" folder, but I didn't find an explorer folder inside that.

Everything Else / Could Use Some Help With My Computer
« on: May 10, 2008, 05:54:23 AM »
So, I recently moved out of my apartment at college to my parent's house. My computer was disconnected for about a week before I got it all hooked up again, and now it says that the administrator has disabled access to the cd and dvd drives. I am pretty positive that it is not a hardware issue, because when I put in a dvd, the drive's name changes to the name of the dvd. However, there are large red x's over my drives in "my computer," and I can't access any of the cd's or dvd's that I put in. My account is the only one on my computer and I have administrative rights. In device manager, it lists both drives as enabled and working properly. At this point, I am guessing it has to be a virus, but I ran avast, and it didn't find anything. I plan to run ad-aware and spybot, just in case, but I don't expect that they will work. So, my options, as I see them at this point, are to run every free antivirus I can get my hands on, or I can reformat my hard drives. Does anybody have any alternatives, or bits of wisdom?

Music / Re: Suggestions
« on: April 22, 2008, 03:24:19 AM »
Ok, let me take a shot at this. Hopefully I can satiate SE a little bit.

Ah Via Musicom by Eric Johnson. If you like guitar in any way, shape, or form, you really need to listen to this album. Cliffs of Dover is, in essence, a very upbeat 4 minute guitar solo. Before my iTunes got wiped, its playcount was well over 100. I believe that CoD was the first instrumental song that was good enough to hold my interest for the full length of the song, because it goes up and down so often that, although there is a repetition to it, it never gets stale. Nothing Can Keep Me From You was the number 1 most played on my iTunes before it got wiped, and I believe that, at its peak, it was well over 150. When you are talking about Eric Johnson, it goes without saying that the guitar is the focal point of the song, and he does it so well. Again, he uses repetition, but he is so good at knowing when and how to switch things up that you don't get bored with it.

Our Lady Peace. Ok, first of all, when I talk about Our Lady Peace, I am mostly referring to all of their albums but Gravity and Healthy In Paranoid Times. That's not to say that these two albums don't have potential, as a matter of fact, one of the songs off Gravity is contender for my favorite Our Lady Peace song (Somewhere Out There). However, after their first four albums, Our Lady Peace drastically changed their music, so my description of why I like their music isn't why I like their later stuff. Ok, so, back to the beginning. I have to say that Our Lady Peace was an acquired taste for me. If you have that problem, I would suggest starting with Clumsy, which is a bit easier to get into than the rest, and start from there. Now, keeping all of that in mind, in my opinion, Our Lady Peace is one of the best bands to come out of the 90's. Their music reminds me of another personal favorite band, Toad the Wet Sprocket, in that it is so quirky, but it ends up working so very well once you get used to it. Raine Maida's voice hits ranges that I have never heard out of any other vocalist before. The song Clumsy is a great example of this, and that is one of the biggest reasons why it is the other contender for my favorite Our Lady Peace song (which, by the way, makes it a strong contender for my favorite song, period). I would go further into specific songs, but honestly, they are one of the bands where it would be faster to list the songs that aren't my favorite. So, if you have some time, take one of their cd's and listen to it. If you don't like it, listen to it a few times, until things start to click. When they do, it will be worth the trouble.

Toad the Wet Sprocket. Ok, again, a very quirky band. However, unlike Our Lady Peace, Toad was very accessible for me. Part of this is that they have such a large range of music. So much so, in fact, that when I first got into them, I recall listening to little else for the first two or three months. They have something for every occasion, and again, it would probably be shorter for me to list the songs that I don't like by them. When you are listening to Toad, no one part of their music really stands out as the source of its quality. Yes, their lyrics can be a bit eccentric, and I do enjoy that, but that isn't why I like them. I really like the fact that everything fits together so nicely that, although I do occasionally notice one part in particular that I like, I usually just end up liking the song as a whole. I mentioned that Toad has an incredible range, and that is true. However, I will amend that to say that especially if you are looking for music to relax to, you should give Toad a try.

Third Eye Blind- Third Eye Blind. Ok, so I have given a couple bands in general to try, I thought I would give a specific album this time, so I could comment on specific songs. Before I do that though, I should say that I could listen to this album from start to finish and never be bored with a song. True, I have favorite songs, but I wouldn't say that there is a weak link in this album. If you were ever near a radio during the 90's, you know at least two songs off of this album, i.e. Jumper and Semi-Charmed Life. I can understand if some people got sick of listening to these songs over and over on the radio. I, however, didn't. They are just so catchy that I can't bring myself to stop liking them. That is one of Third Eye Blind's biggest strengths. I can't think of a band that does catchy better. However, even disregarding catchy, if you are looking for upbeat music, Third Eye Blind does it well. The Background is a great example of this. It starts out soft and slow, and gradually builds, until, 3 minutes in, it hits a climax with a great guitar piece. Narcolepsy is another example of this progressive buildup that TEB carries so skillfully.

I could go on forever with this, but I think I am going to have to close it out with one more favorite, and come back later.

Counting Crows - August and Everything After. Ok, I picked one album, but that is definitely not to say that you should dismiss the rest. Far from it. But I think that this album characterizes Counting Crows very well. It starts off with Round Here. Round Here sets the tone as wistful, and a bit sad. This is something that Counting Crows does as well as anyone, and better than most. If you want some sad music, you can find it in songs like Round Here, Perfect Blue Buildings, and Raining in Baltimore to name a few. The best thing about Counting Crows though, is that they aren't exclusively depressing. They have stark contrasts. Rain King, and Murder of One are two of the most hopeful, looking-up songs that you are likely to find. It's that duality that really defines Counting Crows and makes their music so enjoyable to listen to.

So there.

Wow, you could take that in so many different directions. Granted, that is true pretty much any time you use time travel as the basis for a story. But for Russia, that time frame would be especially significant considering you have World War I and the October Revolution within a decade. If your time traveler changed either of those events, the effects would be massive.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Origins of Allomancy *Spoilers*
« on: March 29, 2008, 01:11:16 AM »
A couple things. First of all, Marsh wasn't Mistborn, he was just a Misting before the Inquisitors made him one of them. As for the creation of Inquisitors, it is hard to make a guess as to exactly what it entails. However, there are a couple points that haven't been mentioned. First of all, right before the Lord Ruler killed Kelsier in the first book, he pointed out that the Inquisitors are "very hard to replace." Second of all, when Marsh talks about the process of creating Inquisitors, he says that it is "messy." Based on all of the scenes of sacrifice that have been associated with Inquisitors, I think that it is safe to say that Inquisitors can't just be created by using metals, there is something much more sinister involved. And third, something I just noticed, Marsh said that Inquisitors have 11 spikes. So, when I look at that, and at "very hard to replace," it gives me a couple ideas. There are, in total, 16 metals, including the two that we haven't seen yet. The two that are unknown are theorized to be able to give or take away allomantic power. Duralumin and Aluminum both directly alter other allomantic metals. So, in theory, anybody who can use the other allomantic metals can use these. Or, perhaps Inquisitors can't use them. We haven't really seen. However, that leaves 12 remaining metals. Marsh already had skill with one allomantic metal. So, theoretically, each spike grants one allomantic power. If this is the case, then it would make sense that the spikes would be made of each of the allomantic metals. That would explain a lot. For example, since we know that Inquisitors do, in fact, die, it would help to explain where the Lord Ruler's atium cache went. If he had to use a railroad-spike-sized portion of atium to create each individual Inquisitor, that could take up a fair amount of atium. Or, perhaps all of the Inquisitor's spikes are made of atium for some reason, in which case, it explains it even more. It would explain "very hard to replace" certainly, as well as the atium shortage. However, I think that there is a lot about Hemalurgy that we still aren't seeing.

Everything Else / Re: Sword Fighting Prowess

I always Anduril to be magical. It's not explicitly stated, but then again, Tolkien's version of magic is always somewhat mysterious and vague. For instance, in the Hobbit, it is said that Gandalf always seemed to just appear places, but it wasn't clarified whether it was through magic, or just craft. I remember something about Anduril and Aiglos together being an unbeatable combination of weapons. Again, it's up for interpretation, maybe Tolkien just meant that Gil-Galad and Elendil were that skilled at wielding them, but I always took Anduril to be more than just an heirloom.

All of the candidates seem to have magical blades, so if you disqualify Drizzt, you have to pick a whole new lineup.

I am very glad that this one turned out well. I truly despised the last paperback cover. I have to agree that Vin is holding sais, but I'm ok with that. It's hard to say whether I like this or the hardcover art better. I would say that this one captures Vin better, but the hardcover portrays the essence of the story better. Anyway, I like it.

Haven't read Warbreaker, so I can't compare the two, but Glamdring glows white and shoots lightning at its enemies. Anduril and Excalibur may cut through anything, but they can't shoot lightning.

Video Games / Re: review: Halo 2
« on: January 15, 2008, 07:52:16 PM »
I
Quote
Halo 2 serves as a well needed change from the original Halo. It provides much better sound and graphics than its predecessor making it the more dominating version even though it's not the original. If you want to have a good game time with your nerved not jumping with every turn you make, Halo 2 is the way to go.
I disagree. Granted, Halo 2 had better sound and graphics. It also has more options as far as game types, and so on. There are even some new aspects of gameplay that I enjoy, such as the ability to board vehicles. However, it also changed/eliminated many of the elements important elements of Halo. The result is that Halo 2 is lacking many of the dynamics that made Halo such a success in the first place.
Examples:
Alternate attacks: By alternate attacks, I mean grenades and melee attacks. When I first started playing the Halo series, the dynamic of alternate attacks was one of the first aspects of the game that caught my eye. Traditionally, first-person shooters have shunted these to the side. For example, I don't believe that Unreal Tournament has either grenades or melee attacks. In other games, like Medal of Honor, for instance, both are included, but are unwieldy to use. Halo is the first game that I have played in which both of these attacks played an important part. However, in Halo 2, both of these aspects received severe handicaps. The throwing distance for grenades has been downgraded. It has been a while since I have played Halo 2, but I believe their damage radius/effectiveness has been lowered as well.
Melee attacks have been weakened in much the same way. Also, neither of these aspects can be used in combination with one of Halo 2's new features: dual-wielding.
Dual-wielding: Dual-wielding is an attractive feature. However, for what it adds tot he game, I think that it takes away a lot more. For example, it takes some of the strategy away from trying to obtain better weapons. If you start out with a weapon that can take away all of the opponent's shields in one hit, and you can pick up another weapon to be finishing off your opponent at the same time, it makes specialty weapons such as the shotgun redundant. It also takes away from some of the other elements, such as grenades and melee attacks, which have been weakened in Halo 2.
Weapon-set - This is one area where everyone expects things to change. From game to game, even in direct sequels, the weapons are expected to change. However, there were some things I didn't like about the new weapons. For example, although new weapons were added, several of them were merely Covenant/Human counterparts to already existing weapons. On the other side of the sniper rifle, they added the Beam rifle, which is, essentially, the same weapon. They replaced the Pistol, the most versatile weapon in Halo 1, with the Alien Carbine and the Battle Rifle, neither of which is as effective as the Pistol. Then there is the energy sword. Yes, the sword is fun to use. However, especially in close quarters maps, it is just ridiculous. When you can kill an opponent in one hit, lunging across a room, no matter where you hit him/her, with that much ammo, the weapon is unfair. Especially since there is usually only one sword on the map, so you won't have to worry about competition with the same weapon. Even the shotgun can't kill in one hit from that far away.
No fall damage: This is a small thing, but it makes a difference. In Halo 2, you can jump off of the top of most maps, and as long as you land at the bottom, instead of going off a cliff, you won't be hurt. This takes away one of the biggest tactical disadvantages to high ground. Usually, high perches are relatively confined, so that if someone is shooting at you, you don't have very much room to manuever. Now, one can simply walk off a ledge, with no ill effect.
Pacing: Halo 2 is paced to be a faster game. While it is still not as fast as Unreal Tournament or Quake, it is still significantly faster than Halo 1. Why is this bad? Because it eliminates strategy. It leans more toward rushing your enemy head on, and shooting him/her more than he/she shoots you. In Halo 1, because of the slower pace, one could take more time to position, and develop an overall strategy, rather than just rushing head-on.
