Brandon Sanderson / Re: Book 14 Title
« on: July 02, 2009, 01:23:13 AM »
so to the main point of the post: Tarmon Gaidon is the tentative title for book 14.

Your information is out of date.

Brandon announced on his web site at least a month or two ago that the AMOL with subtitles idea had been scrapped.  The next book is "The Gathering Storm", not "A Memory of Light: The Gathering Storm".  In addition, the current version of the progress bar FAQ states that the working title of the second no-longer-sub-book (Shifting Winds) will definitely be changed before publication, and the last one will probably be "A Memory of Light".

So, no need to argue, it's already been decided in your favor.

oh...

I hadn't read the updated portion of that post, just the original part when it was posted, so this has been bugging me for some time now...

well, that's great!

[edit] anyone have any ideas about the title of the 13th book, then?

any suggestions?

Brandon Sanderson / Book 14 Title
« on: July 01, 2009, 08:08:52 PM »
We've all read the explanations stating that books 12, 13, and 14 are all to be considered volumes in a larger book, but really, nobody is going to look at it that way.  it's like the Lord of the Rings: it's one tale told in six books, called The Lord of the Rings.

nobody knows of or remembers the subtitles of the six books, nor do most people see the series as one whole as a single volume.

people just know that the first book in the trilogy is Fellowship, the second is Towers, and the third is Return.  of course, what they call "fellowship of the ring" is really volumes 1 and 2 of the single book lord of the Rings, but that's not the way people think of it.

so to the main point of the post: Tarmon Gaidon is the tentative title for book 14.

can we please, please use the title that Robert Jordan originally planned for the last book: "A Memory of Light"

It's a great title, and if you leave it as the supertitle (? is that the opposite of subtitle?) of the final "Book with three volumes", nobody is ever going to use it.

I just can't imagine a conversation with someone where I call one of the final books "AMoL:TG" or "AMoL:GS"

lastly, it doesn't follow the naming scheme at all.
the _ of _
Gathering Storm I can live with, because at least we have Great Hunt and Dragon Reborn in that scheme as well...

And as a final note aside from the obvious of wanting to avoid using made-up words as fantasy titles (which does absolutely nothing to help common perceptions of the genre, all of the other titles had a certain... poetry to them.
Crossroads of Twilight is one of my favorite titles, Crown of Swords, Knife of Dreams, Fires of Heaven.

A Memory of Light <-perfect title.

in short: nobody's going to remember that the last three books are all going to be part of the same volume called "A Memory of Light" with subtitles, they're just going to call it by the name that distinguishes it from the others.

I don't know if "A Memory of Light: the Gathering Storm" is still on the title page of book 12, but I can't imagine it's gone to print yet, so there's still time to take it off.

Please abandon your subtitles approach to the final trilogy, and end the series with the title that RJ wanted!

One thing that I have to admit I'm not that psyched about is Sanderson's ability to write battle scenes.

don't get me wrong, Hero of Ages has some great battles, but compared to what Jordan was capable of...

nothing really beats going to the citadel (the military academy in South Carolina, FTWDNK) or actual combat experience (Jordan was a helicopter gunner in Vietnam, IIRC)

Dumai's Wells was one of the best battles I've ever read or seen in any medium, but I don't think Sanderson can beat it for Tarmon gaidon.

does anyone know how much of the actual battle was written by Jordan, and if it's one of the things he got on paper?

on the other hand, Sanderson has an unparalleled ability to tie up loose plot threads (I didn't even realize some of those things were hidden clues until the big reveal.  see: crushedthroat)

OK, the cast is one thing, but what about the rest of the staff?

Has anyone here seen the movie The Fall?

Whoever is responsible for making that movie one of the best looking things I have ever seen needs to be in some way involved in the art direction of Warbreaker.

surreal, fantastic, and colorful, it's the perfect visual comparison to the way T'Telir needs to look

here:
http://thefallthemovie.com/
take a look at the gallery.
there are scenes that take place in 1920's California, and scenes that take place in a fantasy story one of the characters tells, as imagined by the little girl he tells it to.

Lightsong:
Neil Patrick Harris http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3788081920/nm0000439
(I'll admit I've never seen him act and never heard of him before this thread but solely on his looks, I like it. I completely disagree with Ryan Reynolds, no matter how serious of a part he plays I just can't take him seriously)

ok, just pulling a random NPH clip from youtube:

no, this would be the B&N in Evanston, IL  :P

Yea, Illinois bookstores aren't too up to date on any of Brandon's books.
I went to Border's first and they said there copies weren't in yet and they were only getting 6.
Then I went to Barnes and Noble and they had them all with Brandon's other books. I was hoping for a convenient display. Maybe I'll build one and sneak it in there once I'm back in the country...

there's one thing that can fix that...

A visit from the big B.S. himself!

c'mon, Brandon: visit our city!

I kinda want Kiera Knightly for Vivena
That would indeed be awesome.  Also, Siri as Nat Portman would be perfect for this, as they look quite alike.

I had that same thought  :D

I have introduced as many people as i can lend the books to to him. <--- commence with gramar mocking.

I have introduced him to all the people to which the books can be lent

?

does that work?

Its been a while since I read the book, but if I remember correctly the returned come back larger then normal humans.  Granted that can be done with camera tricks, but it would be easier to start with more built or larger peopele to play the returned.

ok, NPH might not be made out of chiseled marble, but he's got the perfect voice and tone for it

Ok, reading warbreaker, and I would like to nominate Neil Patrick Harris to play Lightsong when a movie is made of this book.

Anyone have any other ideas for good actors for these characters?

thanks  ;)

I really want to read it again now, but I still have to finish Feast for Crows first (ugh.  the rest of the series has been great, but this one is a chore to get through)

27
That is not surprising if you went to Walden in the Pocatello mall.  Their selection usually sucks.  Idaho Falls Barnes and Noble had about 150 copies when I bought mine on Tuesday.

Also one of the employees there said EUOL will be doing a signing there 20 June.  Can anyone confirm this??  Oolka?

no, this would be the B&N in Evanston, IL  :P

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that there are no plans to do a signing here anytime soon?

28
When I got my copy, it wasn't in the 'new releases section', but on the Fantasy shelf with the rest of the Sanderson books.

It was also the only copy they had out.

I was working in a library when Elantris first came out, and got bored behind the desk, so I took a copy out of the returns dump and started reading.

I checked it out for myself at the end of the day, and bought a copy for myself the next weekend.

I still have that copy, and it's so smudged and battered, I want to get myself another copy that looks nice for the bookshelf.

as soon as i get a bookshelf to put it on...  ;D

I've also been a WOT fan since around winter's heart released

you can imagine my joy when I found out my second favorite author would be stepping in to fill the shoes of my favorite author  ;D

+1 to sales!

you got another sale in chicago today.

I won't read it for a while (still finishing feast for crows), but i'll slip it in to the book queue before the WoT reread i have planned for the summer.

just out of curiosity (without any details) how different is it from the early drafts?  I remember reading one of the first drafts back when the book was posted here as a work in progress.
